You definitely can! But there's a tendency in fiction, when making them scientists, to make them life scientists - in the Ultimate universe, for instance, both Sue and Jan go from secretary and fashion designer respectively to bio PhDs. (And then don't do much science compared to their male counterparts, sigh.)

It is worth noting though, that CA had a much less complicated villain than Thor, which made it easier to cheer for the hero.

I had absolutely no trouble at all cheering for Thor, lol. When Loki told his brother who'd only ever loved him that his father was dead, his mother hated him, and he could never come home, and Thor thanked him, that was really all I needed. The fact Loki followed this up by trying to murder him was just icing, really. In my view, Loki has a lot of redeeming to do. Not that Thor is by any means perfect, but I had no difficulty rooting for him to stop Loki.

(As a note, I've seen a lot of people arguing that Loki was neglected/disliked by his family, and I don't at all understand why - the Warriors Three and Sif mistrust Loki, but Thor trusts him totally, and never thinks to question him. Odin is all 'you're our son and we love you', Frigga is all 'you're our son and we love you'. The only indication Odin favours Thor at all is selecting him for King, and that's explained by Odin's plan for Thor and Loki to bring about friendly relations between Asgard and Jotunheim; presumably he's either going to send Loki as an ambassador, or (more likely in my view) have him succeed Laufey on the throne of Jotunheim. Even after he's done his darnedest to murder Thor and commit genocide, Thor and Odin still risk their lives trying to pull him up from the broken Bifrost. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS COMES FROM.

My personal headcanon is that Loki was Favourite Son and Odin figured he'd fob the Kinging off on Thor and then he and Loki would go out fishing every day for quality father-son time. He's super disappoint that now he has to keep on being King. He's been setting aside interesting books for him and Loki to read together for decades.)
