THE AVENGERS!! Linkspam!!1one!! (with commentary)
Okay, you guys... I AM OBSESSED with this movie (and it won't come out for another year OMG). I go online and look up news articles about it almost every day. Sometimes, I even hit refresh a few times to see if anything is different. IT'S THAT BAD.
This is not, by any stretch, ALL the links I have pertaining to this movie, but they ARE the most recent. I was sort of gathering them behind a locked entry because I didn't want to inflict madness on anyone else, but FUCK THAT NOISE. COME JOIN ME IN MY CRAZY.
Also: THERE ARE PROBABLY SPOILERS IN HERE FOR ALL THE MARVEL MOVIES AND, OF COURSE, THE AVENGERS. I can't remember any, specifically, but be forewarned.
Also II: Son of Also -- Likely swearing, abuse of capslock, and a liberal gloss of personal opinion (Such as: I don't DISLIKE Joss Whedon, but I'm terrified he'll disappoint me. I've been burned before! *shakes fist dramatically* If your opinion is that this makes me a horrible person, that's fine and I accept that, but you may not want to read the commentary). There are no naughty images, so as far as THAT goes, it's work safe...?

Brian Bendis Praises The Avengers Script And Captain America: The First Avenger!
* I am sort of infant-baby-like into the comics!fandom, having only gained interest after watching the first Iron Man movie and then, like the good little slash fan I am, went looking for a hot guy to pair him with (starting with Rhodey and then moving to Bruce Wayne--mostly out of curiosity, because I think there'd be some really interesting interaction, there; then settling on Cap, of course.) so I am vaguely aware that there is some animosity toward Bendis for reasons that I am unsure of, but I've always enjoyed his writing--what I've read of it. Most importantly (to me), I usually like how he writes/characterizes Tony and Steve and Tony-and-Steve (and Thor!). So if HE says he thinks the script is amazing, then I feel hopeful.
* "I think it's the best thing Joss Whedon's ever written. I was in awe of it, and I still am." High praise! Better than Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? Better than some episodes of Buffy and Firefly? If that's true then this will be AWESOME.

CAPTAIN AMERICA TO BE MODERNIZED FOR THE AVENGERS?
* Short little one-question interview, Chris Evans talks about Cap's main conflict in coming to the modern era. Not so much the technology, but the quieter, more human aspect.
* Although, I still want a few moments of Cap like, "What's EMAIL?"
Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant - Clip
"Agents Coulson and Sitwell face a problem in this clip from "Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant," available exclusively on the "Thor" Blu-ray on shelves September 13!"
* This. THIIIIIS. IT'S SO TOTALLY TONY STARK. I LOVE YOU, COULSON, AND I ALSO LOVE SITWELL, THOUGH I DON'T THINK HE'S BEEN IN ANY OF THE MOVIES, SO FAR.
* They are, apparently, planning at least two or three of these little movies featuring Agent Coulson which ties--or at least vaguely connects--all the movies together.

It's because RDJ is turning into Tony Stark in real life so it is his default facial hair now. At least that is my theory. Thanks for these though, I hadn't seen some of them yet!

Personally I feel CA was a better movie than Thor.I didn't leave the cinema thinking that the hero was a douche and that the villain was at least partially justified.
Cannot wait til next May!
Just a note: My 57yo downstairs neighbour went with me to see Captain America. She wasn't following the films, hasn't read comics.
Straight after we left the cinema, she asks me "Can we see the next one?"

Also, yay for converting the masses!!

Thor just doesn't feel human to me. I know, I know, he's a god. But if I can't relate to him on any human level, I'm not going to be invested in the character. I love Steve Rogers, with his ernest goodness and loveability despite his physical disadvantages. I love even more Peter Parker, with his insecurities and clumsiness and typical young adult drama. I love best Tony Stark, with his self-loathing beneath narcissism, his relentless quest for redemption and the greater good beneath the morally questionable addiction and promiscuity, his struggle against human flaws by the reshaping of himself into a perfect machine.
These characters are flawed humans, and I love them for it. Mostly, because I can relate to each flaw on some level. Giving Thor an overnight struggle with his own arrogance, which he overcomes almost immediately, doesn't make him human to me. You cheer a character on despite, and maybe even because of his flaws, not in the absence of them.

I also like the idea of someone being more into himself and oblivious to the world than Tony, because I don't think either of them will really know what to do with one another.
Steve: So here's the plan--
THOR: WHAT I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER HOW AWESOME I'M BEING CHECK OUT MY HAMMER AND ALSO MY BICEPS.
Tony: MY BICEPS ARE SHINIER AND I'M MORE AWESOME!
THOR: WHAT?
Tony: WHAT?
Steve: *headdesk*

Also I want this conversation as a fic.

Well, that's also true of most the guys. (Tony and Banner being scientists, and Steve and Thor being hot martial artist/phallic.) And there's a terrible paucity of female scientists in Marvel, so I was pleased to see one (and one that isn't into life scientists, which is what female scientists often are). It also gives her long-term integration with the plot, having her studying the Bifrost.
I agree the romance was on the rushed side, but I also didn't consider it that unrealistic that two very attractive and charming people were into each other enough to kiss after... two days?
no subject
Also, switching her to a wormhole!scientist who just happens to specialize in Asgard makes it seem as if she was created just to be Thor's love interest. "Thor! Need someone to make out with? That's cool, we've got a crazy repressed lady who's dedicated her entire life to trying to find you (even though she didn't know it was YOU, but whatever), so, you know, you won't even have to try or anything!"
Which brings me to the romance. I don't think it's unrealistic that two attractive people could be that into each other, no--I actually thought that they were adorable, in and of themselves. It was the SPEECHES, that EVERYONE AROUND THEM knew that Jane was The Love Interest and treated Thor and Jane's infant, budding romance like an Edward/Bella EPIC. I think the part that made me roll my eyes the hardest was the scene in the bar, when Erik gave Thor the, "Hurt her and I'll KILL YOU OMG" speech. This was after the only (on screen) interaction between them had been Thor kissing Jane's hand and Jane giggling a bit. If some random dude walked up to me on the street and said something gallant and then kissed my hand I'd giggle. He wouldn't even have to be as attractive as Chris Hemsworth! That doesn't mean that he's my One True Love.
So, in conclusion: a) Female scientists = awesome, but you can be a powerful, interesting woman and NOT a scientist. b) Movie!Thor/Jane love story = sweet, but sort of overshadowed by all the obnoxious posturing of the characters around them declaring them to be Immediately and Epically In Love. c) This got kind of obnoxiously long, and I'm sorry. This isn't even entirely about Thor or Marvel, this is a rant-button that has a lot of other movies behind it, so I am really really sorry for sort of rambling on and on. -_-
no subject
I don't know how she's going to be integrated, but I think a technical interest in the Bifrost and Asgardian technology will make it easier. In the movieverse fic I'm writing, she goes on study dates with Heimdall so they can work on fully rebuilding the Bifrost.
But she doesn't 'just happen' to - if she hadn't specialised in Bifrost/wormholes, she'd never have met Thor. It's not like he bumped into her randomly and found out she was studying him, she was investigating the phenomena, and her initial interest in him was because he was a part of that phenomena. Also, why do you feel Jane was crazy or repressed? Sure, she's dedicated to her subject, but she's good friends with a colleague, she's friends with her somewhat-confused intern, and she's clearly recently had a boyfriend.
his was after the only (on screen) interaction between them had been Thor kissing Jane's hand and Jane giggling a bit.
It was also after Jane helped him break into a secure government facility and then persuaded Erik to fake official documents to lie to SHIELD to break Thor out of SHIELD custody. By the point Erik warns Thor, Jane has already done something risky, made Erik do something risky, and had her life's work confiscated due to Thor.
a) Female scientists = awesome, but you can be a powerful, interesting woman and NOT a scientist.
Yes, you can, but when there are hardly any female scientists in Marvel comics and lots of male ones, I think it's great to even the field a little. Sure, nurses can be absolutely be awesome, but so can female astrophysicists, and we see a lot more female nurses on the screen than female astrophysicists.
And I really don't see the characters around them proclaiming their love; I don't recall Darcy, Loki or the Warriors Three bringing it up, and Erik had reasonable cause for worry that Thor would cause trouble for Jane, as he already had caused her trouble.
Happy to have long conversations about Marvel movies! :D Not obnoxious at all.

(Though I admit, 'Medical and Molecular Bioscience' isn't what most think of when you say 'life science'.)
I will admit, there were a few things that I started with, that made me a bit worried about enjoying both movies.
1. I grew up with stories from Norse mythology. My mother is Norwegian, and we had a lot of books with myths and folk tales from Norway. Marvel!Thor isn't Mythology!Thor, and I was worried about that, but I was fine with it.
2. It's Captain America. That is, Mr. Propaganda from a country I've never been to. I have struggled with that one for a while, actually. The movie handled it beautifully, and in most other adaptations I can focus on the man out of time aspect.
That being said, I did enjoy both films... I just liked Captain America more (and disliked neither of them for the reasons I'd worried about)
It is worth noting though, that CA had a much less complicated villain than Thor, which made it easier to cheer for the hero.
Also, Hugo Weaving! :D

1) This is a tangent, but I totally had this same reaction to Disney's Hercules. Not for the title character, but for Hades who, at the time, was my favorite Greek god and I was sad that he was painted as the villain YET AGAIN. But, actually, Disney!Hades was awesome! So it was all good.
2) I'm glad! I was a little worried about this myself, actually. I'm American, but I didn't really want that to be what the movie was about. The advertising tag line, "Heroes are made in America" made me wince, but fortunately they didn't really go there.
HUGO WEAVING! I've been watching behind the scenes The Hobbit things, so he's back as Elron, but some part of me always expects him to go evil. I thought he did well! A little two-dimensional, but, like you said, it made it easier to focus on Cap. Not every bad guy has to have sweeping depth. That's my thought, anyway.

I had absolutely no trouble at all cheering for Thor, lol. When Loki told his brother who'd only ever loved him that his father was dead, his mother hated him, and he could never come home, and Thor thanked him, that was really all I needed. The fact Loki followed this up by trying to murder him was just icing, really. In my view, Loki has a lot of redeeming to do. Not that Thor is by any means perfect, but I had no difficulty rooting for him to stop Loki.
(As a note, I've seen a lot of people arguing that Loki was neglected/disliked by his family, and I don't at all understand why - the Warriors Three and Sif mistrust Loki, but Thor trusts him totally, and never thinks to question him. Odin is all 'you're our son and we love you', Frigga is all 'you're our son and we love you'. The only indication Odin favours Thor at all is selecting him for King, and that's explained by Odin's plan for Thor and Loki to bring about friendly relations between Asgard and Jotunheim; presumably he's either going to send Loki as an ambassador, or (more likely in my view) have him succeed Laufey on the throne of Jotunheim. Even after he's done his darnedest to murder Thor and commit genocide, Thor and Odin still risk their lives trying to pull him up from the broken Bifrost. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS COMES FROM.
My personal headcanon is that Loki was Favourite Son and Odin figured he'd fob the Kinging off on Thor and then he and Loki would go out fishing every day for quality father-son time. He's super disappoint that now he has to keep on being King. He's been setting aside interesting books for him and Loki to read together for decades.)

Odin:
* Killed Loki's parents
* Nearly killed him
* Only saved him for political reasons
* Never told him the truth
My opinion: Loki was having a massive tantrum, because he found out he's adopted. The Asgardians are a dramatic people, and his reaction was just that. Dramatic. Personally, I think if they'd let him have that (which was somewhat deserved, everything he thought he'd known turned out to be a lie), he would've gone back to his family. Reasoning: He freaked out when Odin fell and intended to Laufrey to prove himself.
My headcanon: He tried to be the villain, realised he couldn't hurt the people he loved, then one attacked him (admittedly unknowingly) so he pretty much decided "Well, ok then."
And for some reason I keep thinking of King Richard III (damn English!)
"As I cannot prove a lover to entertain these fair, well spoken days, I am determined to prove a villain and hate the pleasures of these days."
no subject
I don't have a problem with him reacting strongly to finding out he's adopted, really, but I don't see how they could have let him have his tantrum any more - Thor said, okay, kill me if you feel it's necessary. Do you think they should have let Loki destroy an entire world (including his biological father and family) to get over his tantrum? I mean - I would think murdering an entire species would also cause one quite a few issues.
He tried to be the villain, realised he couldn't hurt the people he loved, then one attacked him (admittedly unknowingly) so he pretty much decided "Well, ok then."
I'm confused by this, could you elaborate? He did, effectively, kill Thor. Loki sent the Destroyer to kill him, and then explicitly paused, considered it, and then struck a killing blow. Thor didn't die because Mjolnir activated to save him. (I'm also not sure who you mean attacked him unknowingly - I must be slow today, lol.)
I don't think Loki's beyond redemption (unlike the Red Skull) but I do think betraying and trying to murder his brother, and attempting genocide, put him solidly in the villain category right now, and any redemption arc will need him to put in some work. (On a similar note, I think Thor at the beginning of the film is treading close to villain territory with his desire to go and start a war and kill a whole load of people for the glory and fun of it.)

When I refer to "unknowingly", I mean in Asgard, when Loki is trying to do his save the day thing.
no subject
When I refer to "unknowingly", I mean in Asgard, when Loki is trying to do his save the day thing.
But who attacked him? Are you talking about Thor? Thor was trying to stop him from wiping out the Jotuns. It wasn't a case of Thor foolishly rushing in and stopping Loki from saving the day. Wiping out the Jotuns was a Bad Thing.
no subject
Yeah, by killing him. They make it pretty clear in the movie, by Thor's glazing open eyes and the frantic sobbing and so on, that Thor hasn't just got a booboo.

I thought this had been rather civil so far. Especially given what I actually think about film!Loki. However, I'm happy to leave it here.

We saw Loki kill his genetic father Laufey on screen while Odin was unconscious. Your interpretation is that Odin killed Loki's parents.
I'm sorry, that goes beyond subjectivity. You are discussing events that simply did not happen in this movie. I might as well say it's my interpretation that Loki made out with Agent Coulson in the movie. It just didn't happen.
If you don't want to discuss it anymore, that's fine, but please, be aware there is a difference between interpreting what happens on screen and just... making things up.

I just think there's a bit of a tendency to gloss over the bad things Loki did because he's angsty and insecure and charming. IMO, it's a disservice to the character - his fierce pride and cunning and ruthlessness are part of what makes him fascinating. (Like, I don't know if you've read the JMS run, where Loki was female for a good chunk of it - but it was the ambiguity of Loki's characterisation, the fact he could do good things but also terrible things, that gave him so much tension and depth. There was a great moment when he realised a particular plan had played out to be so much more damaging than he'd intended, and he was actually horrified by what he'd inadvertantly brought about. It was great.)
