Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 30 October 2011

Hello and welcome to the weekly [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman/[community profile] cap_ironman newsletter, where we will answer such pressing questions as Tony Stark, Top or Bottom? Does Steve Rogers know how to dance? and Will LJ ever stop being broken?

Okay, I'm actually prepared to answer precisely none of those questions, but I do have quite a bit of news this week.

On a personal note, as of Tuesday I'm taking an assignment on the Island with Little or No Internet, and won't back until December. In the meantime, probably best to PM [livejournal.com profile] garrideb or [livejournal.com profile] valtyr for questions or concerns regarding the comm.

Most important of all: Secret Santa Sign-ups! They're open, check them out!

Ever poke around the Marvel movie site? There's very little actual information on it, but I did find this list of all movies set in the Marvel universe, or at least all movies they're willing to admit to. I see the '90s Cap movie isn't on there.

In terms of actual movie news, Iron Man 3 is in pre-production, and director Shane Black has a few tidbits regarding its themes and how it will tie in with Avengers. Captain America: The First Avenger is out on DVD and BlueRay, and has handily outsold everything else this week. Who's got it yet? Any outstanding special features?

IGN has an article speculating on the future of the Marvel film franchise and if it's leading to an event like Civil War. I would think Avengers 3 would be more likely, personally, but then they wouldn't have space to properly fix it, either. Hmmm... Dear Marvel Studios: Please don't kill Cap.

Oh, probably old news to most of you, but has any one seen the Sweded Avengers Trailer? I can't decide what I like most, Thor's wig or Natasha's.

Speaking of old news, Marvel solicits are out for January. I'm in Deep Dark Mourning over the cancellation of Iron Man 2.0, but it looks like there's some interesting stuff going on in Avengers in the coming months.

If you're reading Captain America and Bucky, you may want to check out Marvel.com's interview with new co-writer James Asmus, or take a look at the unlettered preview art for CA&B #624. More questions I'm not prepared to answer: Who is the mysterious narrator? What's up with Natasha's eye shadow?

Finally, some lovely work in progress/preview art from Daniel Acuña's upcoming run on Avengers. Why so grumpy, Steve?

There's very little actual information on it, but I did find this list of all movies set in the Marvel universe, or at least all movies they're willing to admit to. I see the '90s Cap movie isn't on there.

Or the 70s Doctor Strange (yes, let that one sink in for a moment). And why... Why on earth... Would they make another Ghost Rider movie starring Nicolas Cage... *Tries to wrap head around this*

I'm in Deep Dark Mourning over the cancellation of Iron Man 2.0[...]

GODDAMNIT MARVEL THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS. This and the fact that you still let Matt Fraction write IIM.

[identity profile] littlepunkryo.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This and the fact that you still let Matt Fraction write IIM.

And that Larroca is still drawing it I mean whut

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is Larocca allowed to draw anything ever Really. No matter how popular his run has been, isn't it time for a change of author now? Fraction's been writing IIM for a couple of years without contributing anything new and exciting (unless you count terrible mischaracterisation). Come on Marvel, at least make up for the fact that you keep cancelling all the good titles. D:

[identity profile] steamcry.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Larroca honestly used to draw so pretty. :( I was honestly shocked when I saw his work on Iron Man. It's ridiculously overdone, he uses way too many references (Tony is based on some guy from Lost. I've personally never seen the show, but I asked a non IM-reading friend what he thought of at first glance and he went HOLYSHIT HE IS!), and he gets just plain slopped way too often.

It doesn't help that the coloring style they chose for it was a terrible, terrible decision. The two just do not work together. At all. Whoever approved it is blind.

As for Fraction... IM definitely isn't his best work. But Marvel loves him and he was writing Fear Itself, so I can see why he was kept on. Though, I really hope something changes soon. I hate the art more than I hate the writing however, if I'm really honest.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
D: That makes it even sadder. You'd think an artist's work would improve with age, not deteriorate. And yeah, the photo references are glaringly obvious (I saw some blog entry way back that compared the comic book illustrations with the photos he'd nicked the actors and poses off and... Wow.)

I don't hate Fraction's writing itself, really, I just don't like what he's been doing with the Iron Man title. The storylines feel recycled and uninspired, his characterisation is off, he forgets large chunks of canon (even that which he has established himself) and... Well. Amnesia plot device. >____> He's been around for a couple of years now and fine if Marvel wants to keep him, but let someone else play in the Iron Man sandbox?

[identity profile] steamcry.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was pretty excited when I heard he'd be drawing it... then I picked up my issue. I can only hope that he'll go back someday.

(And don't even get me started on the random retcons, oh god.) I kind of view Tony's memory thing as a device to break him even further. He was pretty fucked before, so they just "reset" him to run him down the wringer once more. He's always had some hard story lines, but jesus christ these last few years. I feel Fraction's kind of limited to what Marvel wants due to all the events they've been shoving out too. It's hard to write an original story line (ala Extremis as the prime example) when you're having to match an event timeline and plot.

I kind of wonder, in both Larroca and Fraction's cases, if they're being overworked? It seems they're everywhere lately. I don't know.

I was reading that Larroca/Fraction were coming up on the longest running team for Iron Man, and all could say was "Figures." But it also makes me hope that they'll be switched out shortly, maybe in the next year or so.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It kind of says something that in the case of Tony's memory loss, it's hard to tell if it was inspired or just an act of laziness. It's like Fraction didn't want to deal with all the emotional baggage Tony had after Civil War, so he erased it from Tony's memory like it had never happened. At the same time Tony's continually put down even more and I can't tell if that's something Fraction thinks is simply appropriate writing, or some kind of punishment after CW. Regardless, it makes for painful reading in the long run.

In Larocca's case it's possible; his art at least seems to have got worse since the start of IIM. Don't know about Fraction. But yeah, I hope they'll bring in someone new very soon; what's with the movie coming up, it'd be unfortunate to be saddled with Fraction for the burst of commercial popularity the Avengers are bound to enjoy.

[identity profile] ewanspotter.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Larroca is so terrible, I can't even.

Thank you for all the links :D

[identity profile] mandy-croyance.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a good community for discussing Avengers (and related) movie news like the stuff posted above? I love talking spoilers and drawing on the communal knowledge to better understand the items of the day. Like why does Shane Black thing the ending of Captain America was a mess?

[identity profile] mandy-croyance.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I was looking for an ontd_avengers but the people who reserved the name don't seem to be doing anything with it. It seems a little quiet but it's mostly what I wanted.

[livejournal.com profile] avengers_2k, maybe?

Valtyr, too lazy to log out of the mod account.

[identity profile] mandy-croyance.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, i joined it hoping that would be the case but so far no one's been posting that kind of material and it'd feel a little odd to be the first...

[personal profile] valtyr 2011-10-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, you know, you can post some stuff here - a discussion of whether the ending of Captain America worked would be completely on-topic. :)

[identity profile] bitchinminority.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Was I the only one disappointed with the special features on Captain America? I'm from the UK and I ordered it in, but there's nothing all that interesting on it.

I figure that there will probably be a special edition either before The Avengers or after its released as a full boxset.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you get the DVD? I've been complaining vehemently for weeks now about how they're only releasing, what, ten minutes of extra material on the DVD compared to the six hours on Blu-Ray. Curse you, technological progress in the entertainment industry. >____>

And also that I have to wait an extra month for it to be released here because apparently I live in the Arctic, but that's neither here nor there...

[identity profile] mandy-croyance.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this. It was the same with the XMFC DVD and it annoys the crap out of me. It's not even the money -- if they'd released a slightly more expensive special edition collectors DVD with the extra features, I would've gladly ponied up the extra cash. However, I refuse to let them bully me into upgrading my entire collection to Blu Ray when the quality increase just isn't significant enough to matter to me and I actually prefer digital files regardless.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Upgrading from video to DVD made sense at least (even if I was hilariously conservative as a child and refused to admit that). Blu-Ray is just... No. It doesn't add enough for me to be willing to spend money on that. I feel the same about the 3D trend in cinemas nowadays; it doesn't add anything to the movie. In fact, it often distracts from what's actually going on. So I will not pay extra for it. 8I

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thor was only available in 3D when I went, but not Captain America (thank god, 3D would've added even less to that movie than it did to Thor). And since I live in a non-English speaking country I'm sometimes forced to choose between 3D version in English, or a dubbed 2D version. It's a tough choice in most cases. :c

[identity profile] joirerson.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. It made me crabby with XMFC.

[identity profile] mandy-croyance.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't bring myself to buy either of those DVDs, tbh, and probably won't until they come down considerably in price (so maybe in a year or two).

[identity profile] joirerson.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not worth it. I bought the XMFC as part of a group effort, but it wouldn't have been worth it just for me. All I ask is that they make it better than downloading it in the internet, and they couldn't do that.

[identity profile] steamcry.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
FFFF- yes, please. I've pretty much just thrown up my arms and started buying the DVD/Blu-ray combos (they tend to come with digital as well). I'd much prefer to buy a straight up DVD with the features as I don't even have a Blu-ray player yet and I'm really reluctant to buy one.

[identity profile] pkai7.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This is unrelated, but OMG your icon. Can not stop staring.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of things were good about Man Out of Time. Steve's abs were just a bonus. b

[identity profile] bitchinminority.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the blu-ray cos it was region free. But there's only like an hour of extra features on it.

I'm from the UK and I checked our release and its the same so I'm not losing anything by getting it imported. It's annoying though cos Iron Man had loads of extras and so did Iron Man two.

I feel like they are waiting to make us spend more money with Cap.

And what's tragic is that I actually would have no issue with buying it again if it had loads of extra features. CURSE MY GEEKERY.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Got the impression there'd be more, what's with the entire DVD - Blu-Ray debacle. Well, at least I'll have less angst over what I'll miss since I can't play Blu-Ray discs.

Ah, the joys of living in a capitalist society. Nerds have spending hearts, sad but true.

[identity profile] bitchinminority.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah there's only like an hour on there so you're not missing too much. It's just some stuff about how they shrunk him down, and some more stuff about the shield and the howling commandos but nothing really meaty if that makes sense?

And there's not a whole lot of the cast on the special features.

Yeah, I am such a film nerd, it's my big expense. And I don't even watch most of them. God, its such a waste of my money.
