Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 6 November 2011

A busy week! First, let me remind you all that Secret Santa Sign-ups are open until Friday!

There's an Avengers preview, which I find most notable for the comic numbered 7.2. Is that the thing now?

An interview with the Captain America movie's writers, where they talk about choosing their characters.

Shane Black, director of Iron Man 3, is also choosing his characters, and refuses to reveal who the villain will be.

There's some speculation about whether DC's relaunch will be copied by Marvel - this article suggests such a relaunch might coincide with the Avengers movie release.

And I adore this Harry Potter fusion art. Hufflepuff Steve! Who wants to fight me on this? I could go either Ravenclaw or Slytherin with Tony, though - he's definitely got great ambition going on.

You know, I wish I could say I'd refuse to watch a Captain America movie with M.O.D.O.K in it, but. I'd totally watch it anyway.

As for Shane Black, he seems to have a good grasp of the movie and what he wants it to be; I'm also immensely relieved he seems to feel the same distaste towards the Mandarin as I do. But argh I want to know what villain he's planning to use instead. D:

A Marvel reboot... Doesn't sound particularly appealing to me. Especially if it would coincide with the Avengers movie release; I'm one of those people who prefers it when the comics and the movies are kept separated, and commercial success has a tendency to muddle that. But no need to dwell on that since it might not happen, or at least not so soon.

Hmmm I think a total reboot like what DC did probably isn't very likely, but it wouldn't surprise me if they do SOMETHING to coincide with the movie release beyond the new Avengers line they plan on starting. I think a lot of it depends really on if DC's recent sales boost actually sticks around, how much money they'd have to sink into it, if they think it would be worth it, and a lot of other things. But I would think that if something were to happen, around the time the Avengers came out would be the best time since the mainstream press will be all over that movie release and they can just attach news of comic stuff to that.

I was just wondering if there's a Q & A post, or some where y'all would recommend checking out if we have specific questions about 616 canon?

[identity profile] arachnes-web.livejournal.com 2011-11-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not related to my question, I just want to say how impressed I am with the way you guys run this comm. As an old school X-Men fan, I can say hands down, this is the most welcoming and supportive comic book forum I have ever seen.

I just had a question about 616's timeline. Since Marvel keeps recon-ing the timeline, do we have any idea about how long ago the 'Demon in the Bottle' story arc took place within the 10 or so years of the Avengers existence? Thanks!

and I'm trying not to be starstruck right now because, omg your work is amazing ^^

[identity profile] arachnes-web.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Opaque's definitely one way to put it! XD And considering how 'holier than thou' some comic book fanboys fans can be, it's just really refreshing to see how open and friendly everyone is here. :D

The rough approximation works for me ^^ That was one of those lingering timeline questions I had before I allow myself to give into a rapidly growing plot bunny. And a BIG thank you for the link to that bio!

Tony's starting to reach all sorts of crazy levels Marvel normally reserves for members of the Summers family

THIS. Except Tony's missing long-lost siblings and children from alternate universes. And deaths. A friend and I were joking about how bad Marvel gets and how, with the Summers family, they really could go on "suicidal rampages" where they just kill themselves stupidly a lot.

I'm a total lurker, but I agree with you on the awesomeness of this comm.

[identity profile] arachnes-web.livejournal.com 2011-11-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
lulz. as long as Gregory stays put in the Ultimate universe, Tony should be safe from epic levels of crazy. I love all the Summers from Cyclops to Rachel, but yeah they are a *very* special family.

Dug out my volume 5 since I was pretty sure it mentioned it, and yep, Tony was at 6 years of sobriety right before Ezekiel Stane popped up! Sliding timelines, why art thou so weird?

I give myself headaches constantly trying to pace things out in my own head aaaalllll the time. XD

[identity profile] arachnes-web.livejournal.com 2011-11-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Sliding timelines always makes things more weird, but I guess that's the price we pay for never-ending stories. XD

But thanks for looking that up! Even if it doesn't make perfect sense when put into the Avengers sliding timeline, it's still a big help. ^^

re: relaunch

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2011-11-07 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
The Marvel universe has had so many events since Civil War that would pretty much just be another 'non event' so to speak. DC's relaunch has been covered with a lot of skeevy though, like the Catwoman and Kora's kerfuffle re: what they were relaunched as.

Thanks for the article re: Shane Black. He's honest, eh? I'm rather in mourning over the absence of the Mandarin, I thought the Knauf brothers made him a more rounded character than The Yellow Peril. If handled well, it could have been a commentary on America and it's changing dynamic with the East and yet, the notion of two men being different sides of the same coin - but with a lot of movies looking towards the overseas markets to make money that they couldn't in the US domestic market1 it pays for them to keep the Mandarin out of it.

Re: Secret santa - I'm still thinking about prompts - that's always the hardest thing to do for me.

1 The Tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie was a financial failure in the US, but over there in the Far East and the other foreign markets, it made its money and then some.
