Home again home again, tralala.

If this isn't aloud, please feel free to delete. mods.

Hey guys, I'm trying to get back into the fandom, and man, have you all been busy little bees! I'm Perry, aka perrypadfoot, but also [livejournal.com profile] camelonajourney.  I've been away for a while, dealing with some real life stuff, and I was just wondering how everybody's doing?
Having been out of the game a while, I'd like to get some feedback on the state of the fandom these days? Having lurked around capkink and avengerskink, does there seem to be a lot of... coocoo for cocoa puffs going around, or is that just me?

Also, anything major I've missed? I see our lovely mods haven't changed since my last lurk.

I've really missed you guys a lot! I'd love to know how many of my fave peeps are still around!

This is a weird post, but it's 5AM here, soooo.. :D

Well, you're home for Christmas :D

Long time no see. I'm the last one to speak on the state of fandom but from what I can see, a fair lot of it seems to have spread to tumblr - not that it's slowed down the activity in this comm much, but it's just interesting to see. It seems that the Avengers movie has lit a fire of collective interest, so I'm seeing a lot of movie fic and people using this to get into the comics, and heeding others' advice about Civil War (rule no 1: we do not talk about Civil War). I myself am going to weep for the state of coding abilities (I do a day of comicstore_news) when the Avengers movie comes out - it's going to make X-men: First Class fandom look low key, and sedate.

Having lurked around capkink and avengerskink, does there seem to be a lot of... coocoo for cocoa puffs going around, or is that just me?

Haven't been there, so I can't comment, sorry!

Man, I don't even...

I can understand the whole nostalgia of a fandom belonging to 'just you' but the economics of thing - where the powers that be want to make money via movie and merchandising, it wasn't going to be, "Just us." for long. I do welcome the wave of new writers, and new ideas, knowing that all of these ideas will not be to my satisfaction, but fandom is a buffet, and if you want AUs with Steve/Tony raising Peter, go nuts on that reality, that is none of my never mind, you know?

especially with all of the "I was here first" people ranting about how slash ruins characterizations or some crazy can of worms.

LOLz, in a way I can sympathise. Not that I ever shipped Erik/Charles, but growing up with the X-men comics, Erik and Charles were a constant in my head, and then the movie inverted that constant. It was rather like... seeing your scholarly Professors, instead of being passionate about their subject being passionate about the other and how the movies were so good emotionally, the XFC Charles/Erk fandom paled in comparison to the movie, because a lot of the fic was gauche compared to what the relationship was in the movie.

In that same breath, I guess if people see Steve Rogers and Tony Stark like that, and then encounter fanfiction that's rather... not so emotionally resonant, they are going to have a moan. All this to say, I can sympathise. Not agree, or condone, because there's always canon, and the great thing about fanfic is the notion of keeping stories alive, and the shared squee... but I can't dismiss that sort of feeling outright.

I digress.

In the same breath, there have been good writers from other fandoms writing Steve/Tony - and they aren't necessarily seeking out the comm, they are posting to their LJs and tumblrs (I don't get writing fic on tumblr ) or their AO3s.

Yeah, tumblr - they were the nucleus of the XFC explosion, and LJ just one of its tributaries. It felt odd seeing LJ being more of a limb of fandom rather than the torso, but I can see the attractions of tumblr, truly.

Oh, god, I know, I'm both terrified of and super excited about the imminent fandom explosion, but really? Worse than XMFC? I'm... not sure how that would even work... I feel like we would break the internet if that were the case...

If the movie is good, it's going to be a tsunami of fic and squee and gifs. If the movie is like Wolverine: X-men origins... not really.

Hello!

I'm relatively new here, and a lurker (I'm working on it!), but I'm glad your RL stuff has been sorted out!! I think every healthy fandom has a side dish of crazy, so I just sorta don't even pay attention to it. A lot of the fandom's spread to Tumblr as well, which is where I first started off, but then it led me to this lovely comm here and got me to start buying comics of all sorts! I think, as far as I've seen, that it's fairly well-balanced between here and there.

I unfortunately can't add much to this because I'm on the new-ish side, but just wanted to say hello!

Here are some links of some pretty cool people! Also, what's your tumblr? I'd love to follow you! Just swap the x's for t's, as I'm sure you know.

Hey, I haven't seen you in ages!

The Mods have changed, obviously, and so far we haven't caused an armed uprising. Which I think it for the good. There's a few changes to comm rules, but nothing major, mostly we just reworded old rules for clarity and posted them all in the same place.

Most of the original fans of gone, there's maybe a dozen of us left who were active when you were last here, I think. BUT! The movie has brought a tonne of new people and they're friendly and nice and rather bouncy on the whole, so I'm enjoying them. Some really good writers and artists in there, too.

I found the kink memes have a little too much coocoo for me, though I tend to find that of kink memes in general, so I haven't been on them much. Every so often someone links me over or crossposts, and there is good fic happening.

The comm itself seems to be about the same in tone as when you were here, for the most part.

Nice to see you back.

Well, it used to be a pretty tiny community, so a dozen is not so bad :)

I think we were a bit bigger when I joined. Still, it's a fair point. We have some wonderfully dedicated fans.

I'm hoping lots of the people coming in with the movie decide to stick around.

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just wanted to stick my head in and say that the movies introduced me to this fandom, but the fic, in particular the comic fic, is what made me adore Steve/Tony. I've also been very pleased by how welcoming the comic fans have been to those of us coming in from the movies. Not all fandoms are so welcoming. So, I hope to stick around for a long time myself. :D

I'm really glad to hear that.

This is the first time I've been on this side of that one. Usually I'm in the wave coming in with the adaptation (or I'm inactive in the fandom when the wave hits). I thought I might be sad at all the changes, so far it's been great to have the new energy.

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
New energy is always good for a fandom, but as a newbie I was thrilled to find so many wonderful novel length fic already waiting. There is no better way to fall in love with a pairing than some good novels. It also opened me up to the comics, which I have now read some of.

The thing I like about the movies is that they are so streamlined and it is easy to get the canon right, however the comics have really added to the depth of the characters. In my ideal world the comics influence and expand on the movies making for a lovely hybrid. :D

I just hope the love stays, because right now Avengers is an exciting and happy-making fandom to be a part of and Steve/Tony, in my opinion, is the best part of that. ♥

[identity profile] stalkerbunny.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't vouch for an entire fandom, since I tend to have practically anti-magnetism when it comes to wank and other such shenanigans (as in, it tends to happen while I'm elewhere and then I just go "wait what??? D:").

But I wouldn't judge any fandom based on kink memes either, since... well, I have seen some nice ones, but understandably the anonymity might encourage some slightly crazier behavious sometimes? Which is not to say I think kink memes are a bad thing or anything, I've personally found some lovely fics on them. :3

[identity profile] stalkerbunny.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
...By which I mean to say, I wouldn't worry overmuch, if you feel like doing fanworks, do it? ^__^

I like a bit of coocoo in my Cocoa Puffs from time to time. :) The fandom survives and expands. With any luck the movies will lure back fans who've drifted away; and we have some very nice new people. :)

If you fancy doing a bit of writing for prompts, why not take a look at our community prompts? You're too late to sign up for the exchange proper, but you could do a gift for someone. :) I promise minimal coocoo.

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. I'm glad I'm not the only one that likes some of that "coocoo." Variety is the spice of life.

It would be deeply hypocritical of me to take any other attitude, given my body of work. Ahem. ;)

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I might be new but I had gathered that already. Probably because my body of work in another fandom is very similar. ;)

And yet for some reason Steve and Tony want me to court them with preslash tinged Gen. IDEK where my usual muse went. I think Kink Bingo tired it out.

They are also profoundly cute when just making slashy eyes at each other. :D
