I don't understand how you go about making friends on tumblr :( I like it! I think! I like the people on there, I like the tumblr sense of humour, it seems like lots of fun, but it all moves so fast! I like LJ and its permanence. With LJ, I can go back and read things I posted when I was twelve (though that's rarely a good idea). With tumblr, I can barely find what people posted three days ago.
But it's interesting how everyone seems to be kind of more connected in tumblr, but also less. It seems to be like there's a kind of unity to tumblr, almost like it's one fandom, where you have that sort of vague love for everyone there, even the people you don't know, because they are Your Kind, whereas LJ is all friendslocking and filtered posts and so on. But the friendslocking and the filtering means you become much closer to the people you meet, whereas I've seen things on tumblr about unfollowing people for posting personal posts.
