Fic: I Walked A Thousand Miles Just To Slip This Skin (R) by IamShadow
Title: I Walked A Thousand Miles Just To Slip This Skin
Author:
iamshadow
Fandom: The Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe
Pairings: Gen, Pre-slash Steve/Tony
Rating: R
Word Count: 18,679
Summary: He's become so used to being Iron Man and an Avenger, to battling Doombots and aliens and evil scientists trying to take over the world, that he'd forgotten that sometimes people want to do harm to you, personally, when you've just snuck out of the Tower to get mid-afternoon doughnuts.
Content: Genderswap, gender dysphoria, body issues, self esteem issues, non-consensual drugging, references to rape, references to hate crime, references to transphobia, references to war crimes, trope subversion.
A/N: Written for my Free Square of Round One of
trope_bingo.
This story was partly born out of frustration at depictions of genderswap in fic as being cracky, sexy funtimes, or as a vehicle to slash. I wanted to write Tony struggling with gender dysphoria, with the journey his character takes being the prime focus, rather than a vehicle to a ship. So, this story has subtle hints of changing feelings, but that's not the point of it.
This is also the longest one shot I've ever written. \o/
Enormous thank yous to my gender betas,
nathaniel_hp and
kaz, and my story betas,
51stcenturyfox and
tree00faery. You're all awesome, and this story is a hundred times better because of you.

Yes, the wanting and trying to do the right thing was exactly what I was aiming for with Steve, hence the 'I'm not a bigot' line at the beginning of the workshop scene after he's been on the internet. He really does try, but he's hampered by his youth and education in another century. (On the AO3 post, in the comments I talk more about this; probably boringly, but oh well. I did think about all this crap when I was writing!)

Kudos again, and I hope you write more Avengers fic!

Yeah, I don't have a problem with people writing cracky genderswap, it can be really fun in the right author's hands. What I couldn't find were fics with realistic fall-out, and that's why I got annoyed and determined to write some. :)
Total props to my gender betas; they're the reason that Tony's experience is as realistic as it is. They steered me right when I could have written something wrong, or accidentally omitted a whole facet of the reality of living with gender dysphoria.
The Steve subplot just sort of grew up by accident; he wasn't supposed to feature any more heavily than any other character, but he turned out to do so, and I liked it, so there he is. :)
Natasha and Tony have a really interesting dynamic; I don't know if you read the comments on AO3, but the scene where Natasha offers to teach Tony how to fight was the first thing I wrote, and it's relatively unchanged from that initial draft. I liked the idea of her in kind of a protective role, but not a stereotypical protective role where she's taking over Tony's agency. She's totally standing back and letting Tony make his own choices, but she steps up and offers him options or feedback when she thinks he needs it or he's floundering without it. I mean, they're not BFFs, but there's a respect there between them.
That scene with Bruce was one of my favourite scenes in the story to write, and it's definitely my partner's number one favourite. She loves the Bruce & Tony show, so I made sure it echoed the weird mix of snark and utter mutual fanboyness you see in the film, because that's what she enjoys most about it. I know the concept of a Hulk playroom in the tower is not even close to being an original idea in the fandom, but I think there's a genuine need for Bruce to have such a thing, so I bowed to the wisdom of the masses and wrote one in. As fanon tropes go, it's not a bad one. :)
