Discussion Question Wednesday! #10: Avengers: Age of Ultron Teaser Trailer
It is time for another one of these. Sorry for it being a day late.
That's right we are going to discuss the trailer. Remember to use the spoiler cut if you are going to talk about anything not in the trailer. You can click on the link for the code or use the icon to insert one.
So, what did you guys think were you excited? Disappointed? Curious? Let us know in the comments.

The Trailer
The trailer was presented in that very formulaic style. Voice over with lots of cuts. The thing is the cuts are all very short and the voice over well... It is all very over done the singing child and the gruff villain voice. That format doesn't work for super hero movies. I was disappointed. Normally Marvel does a much better job in their trailer presentation.
I'm hoping that since this was just a teaser trailer that the next trailer will be better constructed. Also, I wonder if they put every dark and stark scene in the trailer. Also was impressed that the scenes that did have color seemed muted. I wonder if that was done for the trailer or if it is like that in the movie.
The content
Tony!!! I'm so happy to see him in his suit. but it got trashed thoroughly. And, his face when he was talking about how he started this all.
I wonder if that is him in the Hulkbuster and what his face looks like there. Having to fight your friend like that can't be good.
You also had Thor lifting Tony up by his neck. There was the ballerina scene which I wonder if it is a Natasha flashback.
And Bruce in those two scenes looked so traumatized.
We were promised more Clint and there was only one Clint scene in the trailer.

The quick cuts are frustrating but they do the job of hyping up the tension.
I'm trying to figure out who the female in the blue dress is standing next to Thor when Ultron crushes the broken suit's head - it doesn't look like Jane and it's not Maria because she's on the other side of the room I think. Any ideas?
Like the Hulk/Natasha moment when they touch fingertips but the broken shield breaks my heart!
I want more of the team speaking to each other and interacting - the only ones to speak were Ultron, Natasha and Tony if I remember rightly.
Poor Bruce, I just want to cuddle him.
I wonder what Steve's flashback at 1:31 is about? He's in a crowded dance hall in the 40s in his army uniform(?) by the look of it. Maybe it's tied in with Bucky somehow?

I was thinking it might be Wanda, but it's too early in the movie, and it doesn't look like Darcy, either. Could it be Bobbi? She has brown hair in at least one episode of AoS.
Oh, other possibilities:
--Sif?
--Kim Soo Hyun is reported to have a fairly large role as a scientist helping Tony. (I'm still keeping fingers crossed it may be Ru). It could be her.
I had heard about the broken shield but I'm starting to suspect that is that that is not Steve's shield but a prop shield belonging to a civilian or a decoration of some sort, and a typical Marvel fakeout.
from what I've heard, Wanda opens a gate because they need something from Peggy. Hayley Atwell is confirmed in the film, as younger Peggy.

It could be a prop shield although Thor lying motionless next to it is a bit disturbing. Marvel do like their fake outs though.
OMG, that spoiler is ace! Clever ol' Marvel tying it up with their other planned output.

Okay, revising my speculation: it's a potential future that Wanda shows Tony.
Mostly, I think breaking the shield is one of those things you can only do ONCE in the series and have it be effective, so it's the kind of thing I'd hope they'd wait on, though since there's speculation that Andy Serkis is playing Klaw and that means T'challa might show up, maybe breaking the shield is how we introduce Black Panther? I'm not sure how much I trust that speculation, though.
Anger at Bruce/Natasha is stemming from a lot of people feeling like it reduces Natasha to a romantic interest, mostly on the basis of the fact that Whedon has repeatedly stated that Hulk is his favorite Avenger and he wants to have Hulk feature more in this film since they'r departing from the Hulk movies that got made. So the thinking is that Whedon is shoving the most significant female character into a relationship because it's what he wants for Bruce. I feel like there's enough in Avengers to establish the possibility (the scene in India, the "we could use a little worse" line), but I know a lot of people don't see it at all, or are holding out for a ship with someone she's got an established more significant relationship with, like Clint or Steve, or they want to see her in a relationship with Bucky as in the comics, so they're disappointed.
I get it on a certain level: I know a lot of the fic for the ship is either creepy and Stockholmy, or completely ignores the chase on the helicarrier, and is often a pair the spares ship, so I think people in fandom are coming to it with that at the back of their minds. I really didn't like the ship until I actually started writing it, so I do understand why people have a strong reaction to it-- I literally wrote it to see if there was any way I could make it feel plausible to me, or if it was a lost cause. I pretty much fell in love with it, but I can see why other people might not have the same response.

I remember when the escalator pre-kiss still from CA:TWS was released and there was rumblings about a Steve/Natasha romance but they took the bromance route instead (which was awesome) so it could be the same with Nat/Bruce.
I've never read any Nat/Bruce but I can see the possibilities.

I read a leak of the first ten minutes of the film that says explicitly that they are dancing around each other and Bruce is afraid to get involved with her because of what the Hulk did on the helicarrier
(Also, go look at that cap in the Tower again-- Natasha's hand is on Bruce's shoulder there, as well)

Given the previous films it does seem a bit out of left field to possibly develop a romance between them but if so, hopefully it won't be forced or shoehorned in for the sake of it.
That's one advantage of being a slash shipper though, I can just continue to ignore the canon romances quite merrily (having said that I ship Steve with just about everyone). :D

I just kind of ship a whole mess of things. I also ship Sam and Natasha, and yes, Steve with about six different people, and and and... My only serious OTP I will not go back on for any reason is Carol/Rhodey.

It is like the one post mem put up on her tumblr recently. Why do fans have it in their heads that people can't have meaningful close relationships with more than one person. Whether you ship Nat/Bruce or not, it is a great emotional moment between two team mates and a contrast from Avengers Assemble where she's scared of him.
I liked that one a lot too. forgot about it when I was writing up.

Yep, I'm going with Kim Soo Hyun.

And looking around it's a bit like i'm alone... so. uh. Anyone else like it...?

I think you, watching it late, got the second wave responses. The early responses were all positive. Then you got the people who started asking questions about it and poking holes in it, and the people who watched it a few times and came away with legit criticism. Then you got some people who were just looking for reasons to hate it. I think we're starting to get another wave of people who like it again.

Also stumbled across a hilarious post on my tumblr feed with someone observing that (me paraphrasing here:) "OMG new trailer - I can't wait to hate everything about it and reblog everything from it anyway" was apparently a common response. That made me laugh ;)

That might be part of my reaction. It got built up in my head. I'm by no means underwhelmed, but I'm not overwhelmed with feels either. I guess I'm just "whelmed".

Oh and the scene where people are yelling at something (it is early on right after the scene of people racing around cars) it looks like they are angry not scared. I wonder if this is toward the end of the film.
I wonder if this is the aftermath, people angry at the Avengers blaming the superheroes for the devastation of Ultron leading Tony to agree that something has to be done to stop incidences like this and so we have a perfect set up for the start of Civil War in Cap3
