Isn't it a little too convenient that some mysterious old man wearing blue with a star-ish type pendant hanging right in the middle of his chest just happens to walk right up to the broken vision machine and make it work.

That's exactly why I was thinking/speculating that it's "a" Steve who gives Tony a message. Something is up, I just don't dare to hope after this gruesome gruesomeness. >.<
