What to read in Iron Man volume 1
I hope this is allowed (otherwise I'll delete it) and I know someone else probably already did this, but last year I reread Iron Man volume 1 and wrote down a ist of issues that, in my opinion, were the best to read to get the whole 'volume 1 picture' of Tony Stark, his story and his character. I have actually never posted in this community before, but I used to post on the livejournal mirror community before migrating to tumblr, so I really hope this is okay!
Also, I am doing the same with Avengers v1!
#008: Withney Frost’s backstory (Madam Masque) (her appearance is on and off since #001)
#002-022: Janice Cord is Tony’s girlfriend on and off in these issues but she is usually in every one of them.
#016-018: The amazing story of the LMD who impersonates Tony Stark. Madame Masque appears with the mask for the first time and no one, not even the reader, knows she is Whitney Frost.
#019: Tony’s heart is fine, it’s now replaced with synthetic tissue. Also, Whitney kidnaps Tony again and finally reveals her identity. Also the kiss.
#041-043: Tony Stark starts falling in love with Marion/Marianne Rodgers, and she finds out about her own telepathic powers.
#047: A recap of Iron Man’s origin story.
#048: For the first time there’s a concern for Tony drinking.
#057-059: Pepper returns! And Tony immediately hires her again as soon as she asks. Also, the Mandarin’s backstory recap and Marianne is in a sanitarium. Roxanne Gilbert appears. During these issues the problems of Tony with weapons start and it’s clear that the characters disapprove of him building weapons.
#060: Pepper and Happy start having marriage problems.
#062: Whiplash is back. Also: Victoria Snow’s story.
#064-066: Tony meets Roxie again while Pepper and Happy fight about their marriage. Also, Luke Cage, very briefly.
#072: A lovely issue (where Iron Man has the nose, omg) where Tony goes to a comic fan convention dressed as Iron Man.
#078: A beautiful issue that explain how SI became Stark International and Tony’s issues with weapons.
#104-106: Tony loses his company to Midas, Tony works with Whitney and their love story starts. Also, Tony talks about his parents for the first time. The return of Marianne Rodgers.
#109: Tony has his company back, everything is fine. Also, Tony accepts to be Jack of Heart’s mentor.
#116: Whitney betrays Tony to force him to help her heal her wounded father (the criminal Nefaria). This is the end of Tony & Whitney happy love story.
#117 - 129: The start of Tony’s problems with alcohol, Bethany Cabe and the demon in a bottle storyline. During these issues, James Rhodes, Bethany Cabe, Mrs Arbogast and Hammer are introduced for the first time. At this point Tony has been going through a lot: he stopped making weapons, Whitney has betrayed him and left him, Midas has stolen his company which has been taken back with some battles and troubles, SHIELD has been trying to buy SI as well to restart making weapons, Hammer is sabotaging him. Poor guy.
In issue #129, Tony takes back his company. After/in these issues there’s also some of Scott and Tony friendship and Banner and Tony friendship.
#144: The backstory of Tony and Rhodey
#150: Doom and Tony in Camelot.
#151-153: The story of Bethany returning to her husband. Very touching.
#155: A cute one shot story about one of Tony’s friends having some troubles with his son.
#158: Tony’s essence. He has always a mask.
#160: Tony is tempted by alcohol. All these issues are quite nice one shot stories, from #157 to #162. Also this is the artist who starts drawing all battered and bruised. Iron Man in the 80s was amazing.
#163: Indries Momoji appears!
#164: The first issue ever where Tony is shown to rent an entire restaurant to have his date with Indries.
#164 - #168: The story of Indries Momoji and the checkmate/chess villains and of course Obadiah Stane. This is also the end of Tony’s sobriety. With Bethany away, Idris often drinking in front of him, Rhodey getting hurt and then disappeared, Obadiah trying to make him crack… Tony drinks. This is the heartbreaking descent into hell for Tony Stark. The story of Tony’s alcoholism part 2.
#169-#170: Tony reveals to Rhodey his identity as Iron Man. As Tony is too drunk, Rhodey takes the armor and saves the day, from this point on Rhodey is Iron Man.
#172: The issue where Captain America saves Tony Stark from a burning building. Obadiah takes SI.
#173-#174: Tony Stark becomes homeless, beaten up in the streets. Obadiah shows him his failures and Rhodey goes to talk to Indries to convince her to help Tony (she doesn’t).
#176-177: Rhodey, Clytemnestra and her brother Morley decides to start working together. Tony lives on the streets.
#178-182: Oh man. If you want to see Tony Stark sad, drunk, penniless, alone, hurt and confused this is it. Rhodey starts having trouble with the armor. Also, Tony almost dies on the streets and he admits for the first time that he needs help.
#184: Rhodey, Clytemnestra and Morley are moving to California. Tony is sober and asks for their help and offer them his help for the company.
#186-187: They are all in California! But Tony and Rhodey start having some troubles related to some guilt and jealousy… and some misterious problem with the armor. Clytemnestra and Tony are cute together.
#191-192: Rhodey becomes more and more paranoid (hu, I think the helmet has something to do with it) and Tony builds a new armor to take him down. They talk it out.
#193: Cute Rhodey and Tony moments, also Tony tells to the West Coast Avengers that he was Iron Man. Surprise, Hawkeye! Bethany Cabe returns in New York to look for Tony.
#195: A cure for Rhodey’s headache! Madame Masque is back and working with Obadiah.
#196: Tony Stark shaves his beard. Yes. Finally. Also: SPARE PARTS MAN. The most ridiculous costume ever.
#198-199: Whitney and Obadiah are lovers! Obadiah’s backstory, before betraying Whitney and brainwashing Bethany (who has been kidnapped in the previous issue). Obadiah also kidnaps Mrs. Arbogast and Rhodey meets Pepper for the first time (she has… two children??). Morley is killed.
#200-201: Iron Man (Tony) vs. Obadiah Stane. The final battle. Tony is ready to be Iron Man again. Tony saves everyone (Happy was a prisoner too) and meets Whitney again.
#203-204: The story of Bethany and Whitney swapping bodies.
#209: Clytemnestra and Tony go to the Renaissance fair. Arthurian adventures.
#210: Pepper and Happy are back (just for this issue) and we find out a bit about their lives away from Tony. AIM is back!
#211: Bethany’s husband dies. Rhodey wants to be Iron Man but he is not ready.
#216: Tony and Cly’s space station is destroyed by AIM and Rhodey is wounded (also Tony has a nerve degeneration sickness related to his armor). Clytemnestra’s betrayal and her death.
#217: Marcy Pearson appears.
#223: Tony gets a perm. Rhodey gets a manicure. Tony meets Rae LaCoste.
#225-232: Armor Wars (Stark Wars). Tony finds out that Hammer stole his secret technology for Iron Man and the weight of how that technology has been used is on him now. In #225 there’s also a recap ot Tony’s story (slightly retconned). Tony tries to go through court and lawyers but when they tell him that they’ll be able to stop his stolen technology only in 1989, Tony decides to act using his Iron Man armor. This is also when he ‘fires’ Iron Man to dissociate his company from his actions. #227 has also Steve Rogers asking Tony a new shield. In #230 everyone thinks Iron Man died. #232 is a beautiful issue about Tony’s nightmares.
#233: Kathleen Dare appears!
#235-236: Marcy investigates a bit. I loved this story and this is the best of Marcy Pearson.
#238: Steve Rogers and Tony make peace. Kathy is starting to look like a stalker and Marcy and Rhodey have a nice date.
#242: Kathy Dare shots Tony Stark, not able to accept that he doesn’t want to have anything to do with him.
#243-244: Tony has to deal with being paralyzed in a wheelchair as a result of the shooting. Roxxon is back.
#248: Tony decides to step down from SE’s CEO (before changing his mind), he also finds out a hopeful scientific innovation that helps him walk again. There’s also the trial of Kathy Dare.
#250: Arthurian adventure with Doctor Doom!
#253: A beautiful one shot issue about one of Tony’s old friends from MIT.
#258- 268: Armor Wars II. Marrs Corporation controls the implant in Tony’s spine and Tony slowly loses control over his body. Mandarin returns with a story of his own as well. I really really love Armor Wars II. #265 is from Rhodey’s pov. In #266 the event ends (and Rhodey wears the armor again) and #267-268 are issues dedicated to Tony’s origin (with some retcon).
#270-275: Tony goes to China to ask the help of the neurosurgeon Su Yin. Rhodey, as Iron Man, fights the Mandarin.
#281-283: The stress of the degenerative condition takes its hold. Tony is n the hospital. War Machine is born!
#284: Tony Stark is declared dead. In his testament he leaves his company and armor (War Machine) to Rhodey who is not happy at all.
#285: Tony’s funeral. And his nightmares. This is the first appearance of his parents and the first time we see Howard abusing Maria and Tony (and Howard being an alcoholic).
#286-287: Rae and Rhodey start dating. The nightmare and memories of Tony’s abuse continue. Morgan Stark (Tony’s cousin) is back.
#289-291: Rhodey finds out Tony is alive… poor guy. He quits. Tony slowly gets better and Rhodey is definitely (and rightfuly so) quite angry. Rhodey becomes once and for all: War Machine.
#292: Veronia Benning appears. Tony starts physiotherapy.
#299: Veronica quits because she fell in love with Tony. Marcy plots revenge. While fighting, Tony strains himself so much that he ends up in coma.
#300: Tony’s nightmares.
#303-304: Steve Rogers talks with Tony about SE being seen as an enemy by the public and to ask him about how he copes with disability (as Steve’s serum is wearing off). Tony decides to continue their talk over dinner.
#306: Bethany (who’s back to work as head of security for SE) and Tony find out that the person who is attacking SE’s public image is Marcy Pearson.
#309: Vortex possesses Tony’s body and uses his body to drink alcohol again. This is the first time Tony (well, his body) drinks since the pre-California/SE period, more than 100 issues ago.
#313: Tony’s first appearance at Alcoholics Anonymous. This is the issue where Tony remembers how Howard made him drink alcohol the first time. This is a recap of Tony’s history with drinking. Aw, Rhodey and Tony are on good terms again.
#314: Tony saves Steve.
#318: Tony’s flashbacks from MIT and his parents’ funeral.
