When I was in Australia and devouring the Tales of Suspense and LJ's Steve/Tony archives, I read a fic. OK, I read many fics. But there was a line from this story:
"Years of penance, without Steve, had stretched forward before Tony." Or something like, "Years without Steve, full of penance, had stretched forward before Tony."
That was a terrible bastardization of that line (I'm sorry!). But I'm dying to reread the story this line is from I've looked through all the stories I saved on my iPod (and I swear I'll get to commenting on them someday), but I can't for the life of me find the origin of this line. I can't even tell if it's a CW fix-it fic or just Tony angsting about the lack of Steve in his life, but I'm leaning towards the former.
Does anyone remember the story the line is from?
ETA: Thanks,
penknife! Foolishly I didn't look at the end of Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Redemption, only the beginning parts, because for some reason my brain thought the line was at the beginning. Strange. Oh well. Now I feel so much better. *g*
