I'm going to throw up if this turns out to be true

DiCaprio to Be Captain America?

oh dear god please no....

Reasons why he's not a good Cap:

1) Acting range is: retarded person, pretty boy, crazed person, half-crazed person. Can you even imaging him giving an inspirational 'boyscout' speech without it seeming angry and rant-like?

2) Looks nothing like Steve Rogers. (He doesn't even have the build!)

3) Already a Hollywood big name that will definitely overshadow the character.

For those of us who read Marvel, out of all the movies they make, the one character they CANNOT screw up is Captain America, because with Cap, it's personal...

Discuss, cry, suggest better actors? (Although if you're going to do the suggesting, do us a favor and pleeease make sure you've at least seen a picture of Steve Rogers and you know his characterization, nkay? None of this listing hot boys just for the hell of it nonsense.)

If Hulk and Iron Man has given us any lessons is to hire actors who can make a movie awesome just be coming dropping in and saying hi.

So basic line, need someone totally cool, because make up would handle the rest of the look a like issues.

So...
*think thinks thinks*

Ai crap, I got nobody. It's just, man, Cap is just too much of a freaking ideal for me to think of anybody in real life who could play him well, dammit O_O

Hmm...maybe...

Heath Ledger (obvious issues aside) would have done a great job, seriously.

DUDE... O_o I'd think he got the acting skills to do it.

Should look at least mid-twenty.

But a leader-type.

Handsome, but never GIRLY-LIKE.

Nice young man look in him, but not too naive.

A great actor.

Well, Steve should play himself, cause there's no one like that.

Ugh. D:

I refuse to believe he'll end up with the role, but who knows. If he does get it though, Robert Downey, Jr. would literally have to be in pretty much every scene of the movie in order for anyone to convince me to watch it.

As someone else suggested in their comment to that rumor, that Mark Valley guy would work really well. Personally, whether it's right or wrong, I just picture Cap as Val Kilmer.

[identity profile] justlikemagic.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This is as bad as the rumors of Brad Pitt playing Thor *kill me now!*

The only guy I could ever sort of imagine as Cap is James Van Der Beek and that sort of takes some squinting and tilting my head sideways.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the two suggestions here ^.^

I love Mark Valley. Like, in a scary, obsessive, see everything he's ever in sort of way. Ditto with Val (oh, the shit I have watched just for him). I think if this was a decade ago, Val would have made a really good Steve, but now he's a bit old.

DiCaprio, even if he bulked up, just doesn't have the build or facial structure to be Captain America. Maybe he could be Bucky haha

[identity profile] cruelest-month.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

I think maybe Val works for me because Captain America never looks like he's actually in his 20s to me in any of the comics. XD Even the ones where he's supposed to be twenty-something. He's a bit older now too, but maybe Casper Van Dien would still work? If he dyed his hair.

Yeah, DiCaprio just isn't the right person for the role. He'll never really look the part and, honestly, I think the fact that the movie's called Captain America will attract enough viewers that they don't actually need to find a big Hollywood name to play Steve.

[identity profile] axolotl-lan.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Val a few years back as Cap would've been awesome.

Dicaprio... Dicaprio- it is BETTER than Mconheywhatever or hiring Orlando Bloom but um, NO. Just No.

Odds are this is just a rumour anyhow, what'd be NICE is if they scouted good theatre actors with broad builds and the right face shape because even if they get the build slightly off the most important thing is to have -the voice- getting a character with a voice you could believably accept as a leader/symbolic figure would make up for any aesthetic off-puttings for me.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but they could have a mannequin play Cap and RDJ would still have chemistry with it ^.^

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree Steve never really looks as young as he's supposed to be, but I think there's, like, a fine line for age/build/etc. that must be found. And I am horrible at casting, so no matter how hard I think I can't come up with someone (grr).

I don't really know how many viewers the name alone will attract, though. I think younger, non-comic book readers (twenty-somethings, teens, tweens, the people who tend to go to the movies a lot) might not care all that much. It will probably get more people from having cool trailers (like Iron Man did) than by having that name. And, hell, my friends who don't read comics knew Iron Man was Tony Stark before the movie was ever even announced, but couldn't tell me who Captain America was or what his abilities are or anything.

[identity profile] ennui-blue-lite.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Dicaprio lacks the build, look, and presence to pull off Steve Rogers. He's not a bad actor in the right part, but Captain America is definitly NOT the right part for him. Also, he's just too babyfaced.

As for Val Kilmer, he's only five years older than RDJ (who looks older than he is anyway, thanks to 'partyface'), but he'd have to lose quite a lot of weight before squeezing into the Cap's uniform. But, even heavy, I'd take him over Dicaprio any day.

[identity profile] cruelest-month.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather they went older than younger. There's ways to make someone older look a bit younger.

Weird. All of my friends knew who Captain America maybe not Steve Rogers, but they recognized Captain America's name. And they had no idea who Iron Man or Tony Stark was, so I guess it depends.

I agree. DiCaprio still looks about 14 to me. Val Kilmer (or someone like him) could lose the weight, bulk up a bit, and they could make him look a bit younger. It would be worth it to have someone playing the part who has the ability to pull off Captain America.

Mark Valley would be a really good choice, especially since he's got a military background to draw from.

Also, I could be wrong, but for some reason I think Kilmer was attached to a Cap project at one point in the early 90's that never materialized.

Ok, after watching Ironman and just because, I asked in an insanejournal comunity that especialises in putting faces to characters for roleplaying (find_a_pb) who could be Captain America if Robert Downey Jr was Iron Man, and they sugested Aaron Eckhart. He's older than Cap should be, but I like how he looks (and I personally don't know him from Adam, so he wouldn't overshadow the character)

[identity profile] cruelest-month.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope they consider him or someone more like that. DiCaprio just... ugh he's too much himself to be a good superhero.

Damn. In a way that wouldn't surprise me though.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Having heard the name "Captain America" and giving a damn about Captain America are two different things, though.

And Iron Man had a cartoon not too long ago, which helps my generation know who Tony Stark is.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Kilmer was attached to a Cap project at one point in the early 90's

Something about that does seem familiar. Early 90s would have been at a good point in his career to have been considering it, too.

Whoh! I looked at Penikett's Imdb profile. I actually went OH SHIT! That could work! Great pick. I'm constantly thinking about the jawline. It has to be right or else with me and he's definitely got a good one.

I was on the fence about a few people. I thought about Josh Lucas but he doesn't meet jawline requirements.

My Father (aka crazy Cap fan) wants McConaughey (didn't see that rumor until reading your link) or Liam Neeson (he's in Batman though so maybe DC owns him or something). I'm ok with both of them but I think we could do better. Honestly he isn't a big movie or hollywood buff so I'm thinking he just doesn't know enough people to make an awesome pick.

I've seen one person say they'd like Val Kilmer...which I just can't agree on.

However it is please please please not DiCaprio. I love him but he will kill Cap worse then Ben killed Daredevil.

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, please no. I can't stand DiCaprio...

Me and my best bud were debating who could play Steve and we settled with the fact that the person needs to be an unknown, or someone who isn't wildly famous. I pointed out that RDJ IS Tony Stark and he's famous, but then she pointed out that Hugh Jackman is the perfect Wolverine and he was an unknown before X-Men.

Yea, so an unknown. Someone who is strong, has that jaw, tall... Ok, I'm getting a little excited. Signing off now. :)

[identity profile] duffnstuff.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I reserve judgment until I see press stills, or the movie itself...I would be balking and hurling at the very thought, but I remember being very skeptical of RDJ, Ed Norton and Gwyeneth Paltrow in particular. And I had my ass handed to me all three times.

My current obsession for Cap is Jamie Bamber (http://www.achchicos.com.ar/Jamie-Bamber.jpg). The hair, the jaw, the eyes, the roles in which he seriously bulks up, the acting skills and the presence all work for me...but he's british. This isn't a major issue, but I can already hear the cries of 'CAP ISN'T AN AMERICAN? WAAAAH!'

Still...a girl can dream.....

[identity profile] geuna.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorta hoping when they pick Steve, they'll ultimately pick someone who's a little older that Captain America would be. A good seasoned actor. That would also mean that by the Avengers movie they'll all land in a similar age range, around 30-40 years old.

Now, DiCaprio isn't a hideous actor. He's good, when directed the right way, though he experienced that same curse of being type case for the same type of movie 8 times in, like, a year (that isn't exact, but I'm throwing it out there). But as CAP!? There isn't much in the his acting history that would even imply that he would be good for that role, now would have have the build for it. It's just something they're throwing out there. We're gonna see more and more actors being set up to play Cap, though it'll probably be rumors only.

Oh, and I agree with Damaumbra two comments up! Aaron Eckhart would be great. Have you seen that jaw? That's Captain America's jaw, baby! And he would most likely might a great blond!
