I'm going to throw up if this turns out to be true
DiCaprio to Be Captain America?
oh dear god please no....
Reasons why he's not a good Cap:
1) Acting range is: retarded person, pretty boy, crazed person, half-crazed person. Can you even imaging him giving an inspirational 'boyscout' speech without it seeming angry and rant-like?
2) Looks nothing like Steve Rogers. (He doesn't even have the build!)
3) Already a Hollywood big name that will definitely overshadow the character.
For those of us who read Marvel, out of all the movies they make, the one character they CANNOT screw up is Captain America, because with Cap, it's personal...
Discuss, cry, suggest better actors? (Although if you're going to do the suggesting, do us a favor and pleeease make sure you've at least seen a picture of Steve Rogers and you know his characterization, nkay? None of this listing hot boys just for the hell of it nonsense.)

So basic line, need someone totally cool, because make up would handle the rest of the look a like issues.
So...
*think thinks thinks*
Ai crap, I got nobody. It's just, man, Cap is just too much of a freaking ideal for me to think of anybody in real life who could play him well, dammit O_O
Hmm...maybe...
Heath Ledger (obvious issues aside) would have done a great job, seriously.

Only if they decide to do Zombie Marvel.

But a leader-type.
Handsome, but never GIRLY-LIKE.
Nice young man look in him, but not too naive.
A great actor.
Well, Steve should play himself, cause there's no one like that.

I refuse to believe he'll end up with the role, but who knows. If he does get it though, Robert Downey, Jr. would literally have to be in pretty much every scene of the movie in order for anyone to convince me to watch it.
As someone else suggested in their comment to that rumor, that Mark Valley guy would work really well. Personally, whether it's right or wrong, I just picture Cap as Val Kilmer.

I love Mark Valley. Like, in a scary, obsessive, see everything he's ever in sort of way. Ditto with Val (oh, the shit I have watched just for him). I think if this was a decade ago, Val would have made a really good Steve, but now he's a bit old.
DiCaprio, even if he bulked up, just doesn't have the build or facial structure to be Captain America. Maybe he could be Bucky haha

Also, I could be wrong, but for some reason I think Kilmer was attached to a Cap project at one point in the early 90's that never materialized.

The only guy I could ever sort of imagine as Cap is James Van Der Beek and that sort of takes some squinting and tilting my head sideways.

Dicaprio... Dicaprio- it is BETTER than Mconheywhatever or hiring Orlando Bloom but um, NO. Just No.
Odds are this is just a rumour anyhow, what'd be NICE is if they scouted good theatre actors with broad builds and the right face shape because even if they get the build slightly off the most important thing is to have -the voice- getting a character with a voice you could believably accept as a leader/symbolic figure would make up for any aesthetic off-puttings for me.

As for Val Kilmer, he's only five years older than RDJ (who looks older than he is anyway, thanks to 'partyface'), but he'd have to lose quite a lot of weight before squeezing into the Cap's uniform. But, even heavy, I'd take him over Dicaprio any day.
no subject
I agree. DiCaprio still looks about 14 to me. Val Kilmer (or someone like him) could lose the weight, bulk up a bit, and they could make him look a bit younger. It would be worth it to have someone playing the part who has the ability to pull off Captain America.

I actually kind of like that he's older than Cap would be if they stuck closer to the comics. Mostly because I want movieverse Tony/Steve, and if they pick someone who looks 25 for Steve the dynamic really won't work the same way. *g*

Me and my best bud were debating who could play Steve and we settled with the fact that the person needs to be an unknown, or someone who isn't wildly famous. I pointed out that RDJ IS Tony Stark and he's famous, but then she pointed out that Hugh Jackman is the perfect Wolverine and he was an unknown before X-Men.
Yea, so an unknown. Someone who is strong, has that jaw, tall... Ok, I'm getting a little excited. Signing off now. :)

Most superhero stories start with an complete nobody who discovers they have power and have to work out how to balance fame and power, and they work best with complete (or relative) unknowns in the title role. The audience looks at the anonymous geeky kid in school (or the mysterious bar-fighter getting into his van) and is reminded of themselves... And then you build the legend...
But Tony Stark is famous to begin with in his universe - the character has to start out with the natural assumption of power and a background of indulgence. RDJ brings that with him, so from the first second the audience recognises him, their memory of *his* backstory feeds into their perception of Tony Stark's charisma, power, talent and excesses... And then you build the story of a character learning that money can't fix everything (*g* this may be just a little over simplified!)...
But yeah, Steve needs someone who's fairly unknown - and tall please! The idea of DiCaprio makes me cringe, but I've been trying to think up ideas and I just can't: the only guy I can think of with round about the right build is Casper Van Dien, and the idea of him playing Cap makes me shudder even more than Leo. We wants an Intelligent!Cap not a Dim!Cap, yes we does, my precious!... Though actually, having just looked him up on IMDB, he does look more intelligent than I remember from Starship Troopers... Meh! I just don't know!

My current obsession for Cap is Jamie Bamber (http://www.achchicos.com.ar/Jamie-Bamber.jpg). The hair, the jaw, the eyes, the roles in which he seriously bulks up, the acting skills and the presence all work for me...but he's british. This isn't a major issue, but I can already hear the cries of 'CAP ISN'T AN AMERICAN? WAAAAH!'
Still...a girl can dream.....

Now, DiCaprio isn't a hideous actor. He's good, when directed the right way, though he experienced that same curse of being type case for the same type of movie 8 times in, like, a year (that isn't exact, but I'm throwing it out there). But as CAP!? There isn't much in the his acting history that would even imply that he would be good for that role, now would have have the build for it. It's just something they're throwing out there. We're gonna see more and more actors being set up to play Cap, though it'll probably be rumors only.
Oh, and I agree with Damaumbra two comments up! Aaron Eckhart would be great. Have you seen that jaw? That's Captain America's jaw, baby! And he would most likely might a great blond!

After the awesome job Marvel Studios did with both Iron Man and Incredible Hulk, I actually have a lot of faith that they'll pick the right person to play Steve. This early in the game, it's all rumors, so I'm not going to worry. :-)

Brad as Donald Blake - HELLS NO! D:< I could maybe see him as Thor, given a bit
a lotof pushing, but Dr. Blake? Nu uh. And re: Triple H wrestlers very rarely make good films.no subject
Brad Pitt is too much of a pretty boy to play a decent warrior (Achilles? in your dreams)

...Reading all the comments earlier... I pity my imagination once I watch "The Dark Knight". ;_; I probably won't see Eckhart as Soon-to-be-TwoFace!Harvey Dent but a Soon-to-be-Demented!Steve Rogers, thank you.(no subject)

Better than Matthew McConaughey.

As for McConaughey I'm iffy there. In Reign of Fire he pulled off the built soldierish type ok so at least body wise and military type wise he fits. And we know he can play the boyscoutish persona so that some balance in a Captain America way.
I've actually agreed with all the good picks made so far. I say good picks because Bana and Affleck were obvious missteps. Lets all hope the Cap movie gives us all a reason to fangirl ^___^

That would be the disappointment of the CENTURY. I'd like to think I can put a LITTLE bit more faith in Marvel. =[
but on another note, Aaron Eckhart has me SOLD for Cap.

It could be worse, though. At least he's not a professional wrestler.

I'd personally prefer an unknown, or an actor who isn't as high-profile as DiCaprio, but I'm not averse to him being cast if it turns out he's right for the role.

I've also seen/read rumors that Matt Damon is really pining for the role. After seeing the Bourne movies, I think he'd do a pretty good job.

I don't really like Captain America anyway
Really? That's unusual. Most people I've run across like Steve and dislike Tony, not the other way 'round. It explains why you're the only comics-verse Iron Man fan I know who doesn't ship Steve/Tony, though (well, there are a couple of others, but pretty much everyone else I've run across who doesn't ship them doesn't because they don't like slash in general, full stop).
