Alphabet Challenge: G
Author: runenklinge
Title: G is for Germany
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: Marvel Property
Warning: not satisfied with it
Notes: done for the alphabet challenge. I had a lot of more ideas which I wanted to get into the fic, but they didn´t work out. I had to rush it (because I technically have holiday and always forget what date it is...I thought I had more time).
I tried to write this story properly at least 4-times now, but it´s no use, it keeps escaping me.
And in the last hour my prompt wanted to get back to its previous owner (said person will remember^^) and my muse left me.
Sorry for the poor quality, but I hope that the next fics will get better when I´m not so close to a deadline.
...also I don´t know which time-zone we´re using so I hope I´m not too late.
Also, the style of writing is quite unusual for me and bizarre on purpose.
Steve associates many things with Germany and they´re not plesant. When he thinks of that nation he thinks of war, death and cruelty. He thinks of the victims, of the concentration camps, of horrors he thought were beyond imagination. He thinks of fallen soldiers, fallen friends and death.
Then he was frozen in the ice and got a second chance.
He is willing to give the nation another chance a lifetime after he has last been there.
The opportunity arises when he is accompaning Tony on a business trip.
He wants to visit a one or two museums while Tony is in a meeting with a professor who specializes in nanotechnology.
The first - well, "new" first - impression he gets of Germany is surprisingly American.
As Steve walks down the road he sees a Starbucks, Burger King, New Yorker, Pizza Hut and when a girl bumps into him accidentally he sees that she´s wearing a Spiderman t-shirt.
He scratches his head. If it weren´t for the language he hears he could almost think that he´s in America. Although that language has a great amount of English sounding words in it - he guesses English is not the only language "that lurks in dark alleys, beats up other languages and rufles their pockets for spare vocabulary".
The first big difference between America and Germany is the age, he thinks. This country has a much longer history than America; a lot of its cities are more than thousand years old.
The artist in him notices the next difference. The architecture of some buildings is astonishing. Old clashes with new. The churches he has passed on his way, Gothic Age, Renaissance...beautiful.
Steve enters the museum and gets himself a set of headphones and let the voice guide him through the halls. He learns a lot that day; about the resistance in the underground, of the "white rose" and that the country is not surpressing its past and is dealing with it.
He learns that this country - despite its age - is still learning.
He returns to the hotel with a strange feeling. Old memories, new memories and a certain kind of respect.
Steve is curious of what Tony thinks of this nation.
Tony likes Germany for precisely three reasons:
- the chocolate tastes better
- Claudia Schiffer is from Germany
and there is no speeding limit on Germany highways.
The end
PS: this prompt had way more potential and I think about re-writing it. Sorry

My greatest problem was that the story really slipped from my hands and ran off. I think I´ll replace it with a better version once I have more time.
(Also a new plotbunny bit me during writing it and demanded to be written. The bunny was "gnome", I just got a free trial on WoW and already had the idea of Warcraft!Avengers...it was pretty confusing writing that story^^)

I always liked the idea of characters traveling to the future and seeing how things have changed for the better. Learning things that they could have never known at the time. Such an amazing difference... Steve's POV is so full of wonder and warmth. You can just tell how much the trip affects him.

hageln? do I detect a hint of babelfish here?
You meant "All hail to the Autobahn" right?
(Trick: "Hail" means either a praise or bad weather...."hageln" is the word for the weather-thing.
Der autobahn is THE way to go
Die Autobahn is not a deathtrap. You can go as fast as you can handle it(or as fast as the car can manage) and if you want to drive slower just stay on the right lane with the trucks who do have a speeding limit.
Usually i´m a relaxed driver, but on the autobahn the speed is addictive and I drove faster and faster^^

wow...thank you very much. Thank you, thank you, thank you

I would consider it a deadtrap (for me). Where I live you can never relax in traffic, so I don't think very highly of drivers in general until I experience them myself.

trying to induce your brain in a foreign language late at night as not the brightest idea one can have, I speak from experience^^
though I might be able to remember some colorful insults. My sister made me a whole list of them for when a person is being particularly jerky
German has an incredibly rich vocabulary and has been labeled as the language of poets and thinkers.
Of course we have a lot of swearwords!
(if you´re interested in "cursing"swearing lessons" just ask^^)
so I don't think very highly of drivers in general
there are stupid drivers in every country. Some people...you wouldn´t trust them with a bicycle let alone a car^^

"there are stupid drivers in every country."
Indeed, this is why I'm always wary. I don't like it who start arguing about which drivers are worse, which a lot of my friends like to do. A bad driver is a bad driver, just in their unique special ways. Individuals from a state/country are likely to learn their bad habit from each other.

word by word translation or "real phrases"? *g*

my dad likes to argue about bad drivers, but we doesn´t argue about the country, he likes to ramble about the different labels.
(Like BMW, Mercedes, etc)
I have to admit that what he says is sometimes very, very true

And in my opinion German is one of the sexiest languages out there. XD
GOD, I got my friends off doing the label thing long ago. Like, they love VW, but hate Honda (I love Honda myself, I have a Git, and Hinda never dies). So they'll be like "Yeah, this stupid Honda did THIS, they're suck a bad driver," and ultimately label all drivers of that car. >_< After a while of seeing so many terrible VW, BMW, and Audi drivers they gave it up and acknowledged that it isn't the car BRAND that makes a bad driver, it's how fast the damn thing goes in the first place. It's like they can't help but take advantage of what their cars are capable of.

lol, I never heard someone call it sexy before^^
poetic, yes.
guttural, yes.
crude and frightening, yes.
but not sexy^^
it's how fast the damn thing goes in the first place
or how big and intimidating it looks^^

I really love this kind of story - someone from the past (or a different culture) observing and dealing with a new environment. I searched the Captain America fics to find at least one of them showing his adaptation problems with the future, the culture clash and so on, and - well - yours is the first one I found.
Thanks a lot! :-)

It´s great to see that this fic made you de-lurk.
Your comment makes me want to write more fic around this topic^^

I love how Steve is confused about all the american stuff before he sees the differences. And of course every fic dealing with Denglisch should get an award. *is one of those people who bitch about other people saying "public viewing" without knowing what it actually means*
Tony's reasons are great, especially the last one. I can so see him coming to Germany only to drive his cars as fast as he wants while Steve is all "Oooh, look, culture!". XD

Denglish is an abomination and has to be stopped - the things don´t become "cooler" if you slap English labels on them
Tony's reasons are great, especially the last one.
thanks...somehow I just knew that he´d enjoy that one^^
ps: icon love!
yay! I has cookie!

And I love the contrast between his impressions and Tony's impressions. Oh, Tony :D

that so makes sense
Oh, Tony :D

It's very thought-provoking, and deep-
-and then you give Tony's opinion, and it's hilarious, perfect and awesome. :D
no subject
-and then you give Tony's opinion,
you have no idea how much I like this comment^^

I think it was a great idea that the matter was told by Steve. It's touched me, indeed. I want to read more stories in this location. So, I'm happy to hear you'll write more about that. I'm eagerly waiting for the day to come.^___^
BTW, I have a manga about "Die Weisse Rose". Though it has never truly end for many reasons (http://www.geocities.jp/syuketusengen_hanarou2003/english.htm), it's the one of my most favorite.

*hug*
I had no idea that this story would get so much feedback (let alone so positive feedback)

don´t know when, but I´ll write more^^

it´s a shame that it wasn´t finished
ps:
I can imagine Steve's confuse

or
that Steve is confused

Am I the only person wondering wat would happen if he got into a race with Jeremy Clarkson? Deathrace - Bugatti Veyron vs Iron Man, who would win?!
