Ink and Ice

“Wait. What is that?”

Tony looked down, holding up his hands in mock surrender.

He looked in the general direction of Cap’s gaze, then looked back over at him and gave a lop-sided grin.

      “What’s what?”

“That.” Cap stated, now pointing to what his eyes had found.

Tony looked down again and smiled.
”Oh… that.” Tony picked up his foot for a closer inspection before continuing his walk over to the side of the pool.

He put both feet on the first step in.

“That would be a tattoo.” He stated with a general disregard.

“When did you get a tattoo?” Steve asked Tony, joining him by the side of the pool and looking down at the water hesitantly.

Tony looked over at him. He knew Cap always preferred to jump right in rather then go in step by step.

Tony sat down on the second rung of the pool and lifted his foot again.

“Hmm.” Tony rubbed a finger over the black ink on the instep of his foot. “A long time ago. I’m surprised you haven’t noticed before.”

“Needless to say you were drunk at the time.” Steve stated, still eyeing the water below him.

      Tony raised an eyebrow.

“Not necessarily.” He responded. Then he sighed. “Just jump in… you won’t be happy getting into the pool any other way.” He said, faking frustration.

Cap glared at him. “Don’t act like you know me.”

Tony smiled. “Well hurry up and do it. As long as you don’t shout ‘cannonball’ I won’t tell Clint or Peter.”

Steve lost his glare and immediately and silently jumped into the pool.

Tony brought his arm up to shield his face from the splash.

Cap resurfaced and shook his head.

It reminded Tony of a lion shaking his mane.

His smile deepened and he moved a step further into the pool.

“I don’t know why you feel the need to do that. The pool’s heated. I know you hate the cold.” He shouted out as Steve swam over to him.

“Habit I guess.” Steve responded once he was next to Tony, neither of them going further into why Steve hated the cold, or preferred his drinks without ice.

“What do you mean by ‘not necessarily’?” Steve asked, determined to learn more about this tattoo. He shot a hand through the water and placed it on Tony’s thigh. Slipping along Tony’s leg he stopped at the foot and pulled it towards him.

Tony leaned back against the steps.

      He shrugged.

“I got it 5… 6 months after I became Iron Man.”

“Why?” Steve looked up at Tony through wet hair.

“Eh. I was young.” Tony moved his hand through the water. “And I’d been through something big…” Tony paused and smiled. “Relatively speaking.” He watched as water fell from his fingertips. “I wanted a reminder... of why I was Iron Man.”

      Steve laughed.

“Wasn’t that back when you were wearing the chest plate? Pretty big reminder Tony.”

“It was also back in the days when Iron Man and Tony Stark were two separate people. And not just in name.” Tony clarified; still watching the droplets from his fingers hit the water. “Iron Man was an ideal. Something I created back in that cave to believe in. And I had to earn the right to use his name.” Tony dropped his hand back into the water and closed his eyes.

      He looked over at Steve.

“So when I finally felt like a superhero and not just a spoiled brat who was doing heroic things, I wanted to do something to commemorate the occasion… something forever. I didn’t choose to wear the chest plate. I chose to get the tattoo.” He finished, a grin complimenting his features.

Steve paused in silence. With all of the different versions of the armor and how obsolete the previous ones became, a feeling of permanency made more sense. He opened his mouth to speak but stopped as a thought grabbed him.

How long had Tony been Iron Man when the Avengers had found him in the ice?

Cap bowed his head.

“Ok, but why’d it have to be the symbol for man?” Steve teased.

A spark returned to Tony’s eyes. “What would you prefer? ‘Tony Stark is Iron Man and you can reach him at this number?’”

      Cap shrugged, looking unimpressed.

Tony shoved water at his face.

Cap laughed, swimming off to where Tony couldn’t reach him.

“No… You’d prefer if it had little wings and a more patriotic color scheme.” Tony yelled after him.

“You’re the one who does everything in red and gold. Don’t think I haven’t seen pictures of that god awful helicarrier of yours!” Steve countered from the other end of the pool.

Tony splashed water he knew wouldn’t reach.

He could hear Cap talking in a whisper as though to himself. “I thought you liked my uniform.”

“It’s better then when you were the Nomad.” Tony whispered back, not sure if Steve could hear him.

“Hey Tony,” Cap stated, louder. “I don’t know if this heater is working. It’s kind of cold over here.” Steve was smiling at him.

      Tony bit his lip.

“Oh… well then let me try to make it warmer for you.” He said coyly, swimming to meet Cap in the deep end and finally leaving the steps behind.

The water rippled as he made his way toward Cap.

Arms wrapped around his neck playfully as he felt Cap pulling him forward.

"I have some 'ink' as you would call it too." Steve muttered into his shoulder.

"Where? I haven't seen it yet, and I thought I'd seen alot?! Well, I mean as much as one can see in the bedroom in the dark, steamy showers and the occasional supervillain's laboratory."

" I'm not that bad! Remember Christmas eve and Valentine's day we did it by candlelight."  Steve said shyly into his embrace.

Tony smirked. "You realize that now I am going to have to find it."

"I look forward to it." Steve answered simply, only to cry out as star-spangled swim trunks were swept down and thrown out of the pool.

" Tony... that is it I am getting out right now." Steve made to lift himself over the edge of the pool before he realized what it would mean in terms of decency and instead slipped under the water as Tony leaned into the ledge laughing.

He resurfaced at the water pump with the hopes the pressure and right application of blockage would make bubbles to maintain some form of decorum.

" Steve... I never realized how fully you could blush. That's good I can work with that. I do have a tattoo to find and unless it is red or pink it should be sticking out like a sore thumb."

Tony punctuated his words with hands reaching through the wavering waters to lift and inspect his limbs for some mark he may have missed.

Cap wouldn't admit it but the blush was changing with the hands touching every inch of his body and the water streaming against his back.

" Tony, I am serious. Get me a towel or something and I'll show you the tattoo inside."  Steve was cutoff by lips meeting his own. This was absolutely and completely inappropriate.

Then again, there was noone here to disturb, why should love be hidden in a bedroom?

He was certain the combination of water and Tony's touch had fogged his brain but it was like a switch had gone off.

Lips touching, tongues exiting one and entering another, mouths warm and hot.

Steve pulled back practically mounting himself on the jet of water.

"I can't see how kissing will help you find it." Steve moaned as hands pressed him into the blast.

"I'll have to start kissing other places then won't I?"  Tony's lips trailed along the curve of his neck nipping at his shoulder before moving downward.

Minutes passed, each moment an eternity, Cap frozen between letting Tony do as he will or taking him and inverting the situation.

"ahhh, ooh Tony- there!"

His words had a double meaning as Tony opened his eyes under the water to see beneath his lips- a star.

Bursting out of the water with a gasp, " A Star!? A red, white and blue star on your inner, aww how did I never notice that? Where- When did you get that?" Tony spoke placing his hands on his head to accentuate his shock.

Steve's lip curled and he lifted himself out of the pool wearing red and gold bathing shorts.

" The only answers you're getting are dare, Fury, France. You want details, I want you in the bedroom." Steve only turned back once to check that Tony was following.

Seeing Tony's third arm raised in salute he knew the rest of the afternoon promised to be interesting.

Intimate memories of ink on flesh long before the ice, led him forward as wet footprints left a trail.

panda; you are awesome!
of course Nick had to be involved^^

And of course it had to be a star...or maybe it could have been an eagle (at least it´s not Uncle Sam^^)

Review for ink and ice

Iron Man was an ideal. Something I created back in that cave to believe in. And I had to earn the right to use his name.

Aw. *hugs Tony and his self-worth issues*

I love Steve wanting a towel and insisting that he'll only show Tony the tattoo in the bedroom, not outside (also, Fury and dares -- Nick Fury Made Me Do It is kind of the perfect excuse for anything in the Marvel-verse).

thanks for the review!

I loved this. Tony's reason for getting a tattoo was really nice. Actually, I loved that whole scene.

I wonder how many traumas in Steve's life can be explained by a combination of Fury and France?
