Canon questions and possible beta request

Hello, newbie here!

So I got linked to [info]elspethdixon and [livejournal.com profile] seanchai 's Classic-verse, loved it, promptly read through all their stories, discovered [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills was in the fandom and devoured all her stories, and then came over to the comm to start exploring. Phew - be proud of yourselves: you guys totally sucked me in to the Steve/Tony.

So my request: I always promised myself not to write in a fandom where I'm not familiar with the source material. Unfortunately, I have several plotbunnies that won't leave me alone, but no time to to read decades worth of canon backlog. So I was hoping some lovely person would be willing to be my beta and help me with canon details and check characterization. I'm a fairly slow and non-prolific writer, so it wouldn't be a huge time drain, I don't think. Or at the least, would you guys answer a few questions I have at the moment?

1) What exactly was Tony's relationship with his parents, especially his father? I've picked up vague suggestions that it wasn't exactly a congenial relationship, but could someone explain it a bit more to me?

2) I saw one of my fellow newbie's questions about when the Avengers found out about Tony being Iron Man, but when did they find out about his heart problems?

3) About the Extremis and cancer... errr, is that just comic book pseudoscience? All I've been able to find is the scan in the comments here which doesn't really explain anything and Wikipedia's entry that says that "the Extremis enhancement speeds up a person's repair process and hence the body's cells died and regenerated at a faster rate. This effectively made Tony Stark immune to cancer and gave him his 'healing factor'." I'm curious because I'm pretty sure that that mechanism would actually make Tony more susceptible to cancer (I could be wrong, I'm only a medical student, but I think that would be the case). Any other info from the comics regarding the subject?

Thanks!

The last page of Execute is along the lines of "It wasn't your fault, you were used, you're a weapon, blah blah" and Tony goes *looks it up to get his quote*

"Every super hero is a potential gun....and last time I checked, guns required registration"

...of course, I read Marvel stuff all out of order, so I knew what was gonna happen and oooooh, my heart hurt so bad at that. ;; Because the next issue? Is CW.

Yeah, before this incident. He fought and fought it (no idea WHEN since Marvel hates giving timelines)...set up some stuff, had Peter save the day, paid off some guy to do it all, and then he got mind controlled and... well, yeah. After he signs on, he kinda doesn't like too much, but the govt (Secretary Kooning) uses the whole Execute Program incident to keep Tony their happy little puppet. It's....it's very ouch.

CW is....it hurts. I haven't even finished the whole thing (side issues and tie-ins and so on, I've only read the main 7 issues, tony's tie ins, and peter's tie ins) and ooooh, it just hurts so bad. I don't think there is a single redeeming feature. Esp because Cap and Tony? STILL act like old married couple, just....they know they can't go back to that and ooooh. *crawls under pillows away from the heart hurty*

Uhm....from how I've got it, Extremis and Execute happened fairly close together, during New Avengers, before Civil War. The Spidey issue where they go to Washington and fight against it....Tony had Extremis, so it might be BEFORE Execute. Marvel hates/loves us.

Yeaaaah, CW hurts. In that way that makes you want cry for them and write fluff so they'll always be happy some how. ....which is why I'm, for some reason, writing drabbles and then this massive rewrite to make Tony a girl. But still in the Iron Man suit. Because she hates giudbj ;hrfudgdfs

....like I'll ever stop retconning everything I've written. It's 11 pages, and I've rewritten it 7 times. If it ever gets posted, I'll be amazed

>D Marvel turned Tony into a girl officially in Mighty Avengers~ :D

And well, durnit, I want to post it, I do...but I have this annoying habit of not finishing stuff, or getting stuck and then abandoning it for....years. *not thinking about certain fic, honest!*

The fic could, technically, ya know, end anywhere...murr.... *fetches USB to post?*

The problem is...I have Tony's voice down fine. Steve on the other hand, GAH! And maybe Rhodey. I have no idea. *crawls in a corner to await feedback*

Probably (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/3493862.html#cutid1) not (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/4668842.html#cutid1) what you meant but....

Comics fandom - where the canon is weirder than the fanfic.

Speaking of canon!crack, have you read the one where the Iron Man armour comes to life and is Tony's abusive boyfriend (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/3123563.html#cutid1) (as annotated by [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon)?
