Tony: "Must. Save. Steve"

Hiya folks!

Was wondering about something the other day (for a fic I'm making abd because wondering makes me stop thinking about the, ya know, Civil War)...

I read in a couple of fics and stuff saying Tony often sacrifices himself to save Steve. The one comic canon incident I remember is when

electrocuted himself to stop his armour from crushing Cap.

It's really one of the most defining characteristics I can think of Tony, that he both thinks so high of Steve and so little of himself that the idea of sacrificing himself for Steve is no big deal.

Was wondering if there was any other such times for Tony? And any thoughts? :-)

There was also the time in The Red Zone where Tony takes off his helmet and gives Steve CPR, exposing himself to the virus Steve had been exposed to. He says something like "Sorry Tony, Captain America is more important then you." And doesn't think twice about sacrificing himself for Steve.

There's also when Tony is trying to save Steve when the Super Solider Serum isn't working anymore and Steve is paralyzed. Tony saves him on the astral plane.

After... something... Tony being mind controlled? Again? He sacrifices himself to stop the big evil. He dies and Cap holds him in his arms. (I only skimmed 90s comics-- i was so very afraid)

That's all i could think of for right now :D

Yep, pretty much.

Here's a scan (http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j144/crimsonquills/slashymoments/CaptainAmerica437-FightingChanceEpi.jpg) (you can find it on the slashy list that Crim's talked about too... cuz come on! Tony saving Steve! How could that NOT make it on the list.)

they like the romance cover holding poses. The new "What If" (Iron Man died, not Cap) is ALL romance. The Gone With The Wind scene was Steve saving Tony, but still. I mean, really, so very married~

BTW, do you need/want a little background on #3 in panda's comment? Because the actual storyline is made of fail and you shouldn't have to suffer through it if you (a) haven't already or (b) aren't a completist. *g*

I know I wouldn't mind some background. ;D

The short version:

#3 in panda's comment is the aftermath of the whole The Crossing mess. (Which either leads into or comes out the Heroes Reborn awfulness, I can't remember which.) Tony has been mind controlled by a bad guy into murdering some people and bringing on a big horrible doom. Right at the end he breaks free of the mind control and figures out that he can stop the big evil if he sacrifices his own life. When he suggests this, all the other heroes more or less go, "Okay, you do that" and Cap, despite the terrible things Tony did under the mind control, is all, "No! Tony!" Of course, Tony does it anyway, and dies cradled in Cap's arms.

It's #44 on the slashy moments list, in case you didn't find it there already. *grins*

Huh. I know I read it, but I'm not sure the scan link(s) was working at the time since I don't recall them. And wow, Vision looks like either a bodybuilder or he took some of Cap's Super Soldier serum. O_o;;

Scarily, pretty much everyone male looks like that in 90's comics. It was the era of Liefeld, after all.

Ew, Liefeld. I wondered if that was his style. :P

Heh. I don't think this specific issue was drawn by Liefeld (I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so), but sadly the entire era in comics art was heavily influenced by it.
