Beta List (second try)

Since I had to terminate the first try (thanks you html...for adding useless </a><b> signs to the usernames that didn´t show up in RTE and couldn´t be erased from the html-version without messing up the entire post.

BETA List:

List of all Beta Readers:

- cygna_hime: (Info) grammar ninja
- spam_monster: (Info) have never beta'd before, but I would like to try my hand at it
- morgulq: (Info)  avaliable to beta up until March
- jazzypom: (Info) I'm a good beta in terms of helping the writer's work to be clear, making the writer sensitive to stylistic inconsistencies. I do prefer to work with googledocs, and if you don't have a gmail account, I'll gladly send you an invite.

Depending on the complexity of the fic, turn around can be from six hours to twenty four (anything over 10k will be, understandably, longer).

I do try to be a thorough beta, and as a result of this, writers' feelings can be bruised. I beta with the understanding that the work is important, not necessarily the writer's ego. I'm willing to go gentle with the concrit, but I won't mess you around, because being a fangirl helps no one.

You can contact me via pm at either LJ or DW.
- thisfishflies: (Info) I will read and edit pretty much everything

The best ways to get in touch with me are AIM and e-mail, both of which are listed on my user info. I'll read and edit just about anything, but my schedule sometimes gets crowded, so I may not have time for your epic. Just ask me, and I'll let you know.

This is the second try. Forgive me for not using the "Username" option since all my entries get messed up when I have to edit them afterwards. (<lj></a>...and so on).

If you have anything to add, if I have forgotten something worth mentioning, or have gotten something wrong....tell me.
ps: you rock

pps: due to the update-status, I am in the process of contacting our "old" readers who signed up in 2008 if they want to remain on this list. Those who have already replied or signed up in 2010 will be displayed with a blue username (organisational thing, makes it easier for me).

Hey, I'm willing to beta!
I'm a complete grammar nut - comma splices are my biggest peeve so I will keep a sharp eye out.
I speak near-fluent (10 years experience) Japanese and have four college-level years of training in Mandarin Chinese as well.
I also have college-level majors/minors in Nuclear Legislation, Paleontology, and History (focusing on Cold War, Vietnam, and WWII - mainly munitions and weaponry).
I am ridiculously familiar with the 616 and Ultimates universes, almost to a pathetic degree.
I also work in mental health, so I have a solid understanding of PTSD, OCD, generalized anxiety disorders, and borderline personality disorders.
Plus I'm well-versed in comedic methods - i.e. I've watched too much sketch/British comedy in my time. :P

Hit me up - I need something to do!

I've been lurking, but since I noticed only two people mentioning physics knowledge I offer myself up as undergrad physics major that also has a decent grasp on basic Nuclear physics. <-- works at a research reactor.

Also possibly useful: Some Latin, a bunch of slightly rusty Spanish, and familiarity with popular Ancient Greek and Roman writings. Also have lots of experience in gymnastics as well as limited experience with Judo (but I have 2 black belts in karate on call, if necessary)

Warning, I have rather limited knowledge of Marvel in general. I'm new to the fandom.

[identity profile] arinan.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I should also add that I've never beta'd before, but I have proofread way too many papers.

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
oh i guess you could say i'm a psychology nut heh... 5 years of studying it i should be okay with the basics if anyone wants to send their superhero to therapy :P

I'm a native Russian speaker, and can also provide general info on life in Russia during the Cold War, and fun stuff like that.

Woah, man, I guess everyone's offering something special :D

I'm an unliscensed Architect, So if anyone wants descriptions, details of buildings, or details of how building design goes, I'm the place to go! :-)

Yay, I likes to beta!
I'm an enthusiastic reader; my goal when beta-ing is to work with the author so they can tell their story in the best way possible. Standard grammar/usage nerd (because Word can't catch everything). I will read just about anything.

Specialties: Medicine, particularly genetics and immunology- both doctor and patient perspectives. Allll OVER evolutionary theory. Some knowledge of sociology and comparative religions. Gaming nerd. Likes watching the weather.

Times: Available at all times unless otherwise noted (yay uniform work schedules! boo not having Christmas break!). I try to turn beta work around in 48 hours or less.

Thanks for doing this, runenklinge!

[identity profile] yavieriel.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm new to the fandom, but willing to beta! I don't know canon here too well, but feel free to pick my brain in other areas.

I haven't beta'd much before, other than editing people's papers (both academic and creative writing) for classes, but I am a grammar Nazi! I'm also very strong on descriptiveness and showing-not-telling, and I am *very* honest. Be warned. When it comes to plot and/or snappy dialogue, however, these are not my strengths, but I will do my best.

In college, so my schedule can be wonky, and I am more efficient when given deadlines. If I'm not busy, expect it to be about twice as long as it would take to read the piece (i.e. I'll do it right away) If I am busy I'll tell you, and not be offended if you want to ask someone else.

I train horses, know the basics of ballroom dance (swing, waltz, mambo, in that order), and am an art history major with an interest in period costume, if anyone is doing a historical AU. I'm good with any area of Europe and America during pretty much any period, except Native American - they don't have much documentation - and also good for medieval to revolutionary Japan. Other areas/periods I make no promises, but am willing to give it a try. I also sew my own costuming, so I can help in that department as well. If you want costuming information, I need several days to a week, but it will come complete with links and pictures. If you just want costume research and not betaing as well, drop me a message on LJ - I don't post very often, but I do check my LJ frequently.

[identity profile] sdroid.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I feel like I should probably sign up here XD

I'm currently an English major with a Creative Writing minor. That being said, I hate English XD I tend to focus more of the style of writer than whether it's completely 100% grammatically correct. I've taken an abnormal psych class as well.

I've taken two years of high school Latin and semester in college, so theoretically I can give you some help if needed. I'm currently taking Japanese as well, though I'm certainly not an expert.

In terms of availability, I'm on AIM all the time, though I may not be there at the moment. Feel free to leave a message. I generally won't be able to due real long stories during the school year, but I'm always around if you need to bounce ideas off me or just ask a few questions.

re: html

[identity profile] hohaiyee.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Since a long while back, I have a private locked post or posts within various LJs, simply tagged html. That's where I experiment with htmls first.

With complex posts, such as long beta lists, you might want to have several different locked posts of it saved. Are you using rich text or simple one right now?

[identity profile] sdblaine.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I am a studio arts major that has dabbled in a wide range of mediums if anyone needs specific details on that front.

Otherwise I'd be a good Beta for someone that wants to work on flow of a story, someone to do basic grammar/spelling checks, or to help hammer out details and brainstorm. Warning: I am very new to the fandom though so my Cannon knowledge is spotty in places.

All my contact info is in my profile and I'm online most evening after 7 p.m. so just send a message email me with the header Beta if ou'd like help~

[identity profile] dorcas-gustine.livejournal.com 2009-03-29 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hey I lost this the first time around. I'm not here for a beta but for resources!

Things I can help with (not really canon-oriented, but if you need a hand with your fic):

- Italian and all things Italian.
- Japan and (most of) all things Japanese.
- a stupid sense of humour
- Basic knowledge of German and French.

[identity profile] northstar-rocks.livejournal.com 2009-03-29 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
never beta-ed but very willing to give it a go.
I have random evil plot bunnies and ideas, that are quite random.
I'm have a horrible habit of correcting peoples grammar while they speak, One of my favorite books is the Thesaurus. And i am sickeningly full of knowledge when it comes to the "Ultimates" title.
Oh and i work about 3 days out of the week so that tells ya how much free time i have. XD

[identity profile] dieewigenacht.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm willing to stop being a stalker to be a beta.

What can I do?

Well, for starters I can speak spanish (And when I say I can speak spanish is because it is my first language, so I can say I'm pretty good at it, and I'm a grammar maniac in spanish)

And I guess I can do a litle HTML

And I know hell of a lot of random stuff, Mexican traditions (Although I don't think anyone will use that) and some random mythology knowledge.

[identity profile] savemoony.livejournal.com 2009-12-20 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have question about *needing* a beta... Do I just contact these people? Is there a request system. I don't really want to be like... "OH HAI THERE" cause I'm new, and that might be weird...

I don't have much of my own written, but I have a lot fewer blocks on editing-type stuff. I know grammar and word use, as well as Shakespearean grammar, so I can grammar-check Thor. Both are primarily from a good organic linguistic sense rather than formal education, so I tend to say 'this sounds wrong; this would be better' rather than citing specific rules. (I have acted in Shakespeare plays since I was 12, so that's where that comes from).

I have read all of Iron Man (I even slogged through The Crossing) and intend to read more CA and Avengers now that finals are over.

If anyone is doing a historical AU, I also know a fair bit about the Renaissance and the middle ages generally, and more specifically about crafts of the time, the War of the Roses and genealogy of English nobles (and how to find out more, which can be almost as useful), and heraldry.

Beta for most fandoms, even ones I don't know ;)

Grammar nazi, word usage fairy, slang dragon (I'm running out of silly words for this) and, though I don't know if this is important, I have an extensive knowledge of mythology. I can also direct people with the tone of their stories and the flow, to make it sound less awkward.

If I'm supposed to sell myself....

I'm one of only five people who got an A- in our entire batch of over 500 students last quarter, and have been getting A- for every quarter (with only one person in the entire batch getting A) and I've read a grand total of 10,950 books approximately since I was eight years old, which was eight years ago.

I have beta'd people for years now, and I hope you won't be put off by my young age. English is not my first language, but I am most proficient in it.

Also, I will squee like a fangirl over your stories afterward, so my professionalism will take its little breaks. :)

I'd be happy to beta. I've beta'd before, and for a while reviewed and gave concrit on request. I've been noted before to be critical, but fair, and a few I have beta'd for before have asked me to do so again.

I am able to understand and spell in Australian English, American English and British English, though some slang in the latter two may catch me (I will ask about it though).

As far as education goes, I'm a second year Maths/Computing major, so I guess I could be helpful with techy questions.
