Cap-Ironman 2021 Big Bang
Big Bang season is well upon us, so it might be time to start looking for your beta right about now — those fics get looooong, so giving someone extra time to work through everything is always a good idea!

Whether you are looking for someone to reassure your ending is on point,
Need someone to pick out all your weird cut-and-paste errors and help with SPaG,
Want someone to figure out why that arm looks like it's at a weird angle,
Or double check your canon references,

A beta can help!

It's absolutely optional to have your work beta'd, but we do encourage you to do so — it can be hard to see bits that are off when you've been immersed in your work for a while, and having a cheer reader leave love-heart emoji can go a long way to boosting your confidence!

A beta can be someone you know, someone who's offered their services by being on a list or adding a pingable Discord role, or someone who approaches you after you post on a social media platform that you're looking for a bit of help. Read through our Beta Resource Post for a thorough guide on beta readers, from how to find one to tips on how to be one.

Cap-Ironman Beta Reader List
Jump into our very own list of Active Steve/Tony Beta Readers, which has been newly updated, and get in touch with a kind soul who can help cheer you on or beta your work. You can also post a beta request in our #general-stony channel on our Cap-IM Discord server.

There are also other beta reading databases out there, including the multifandom Beta File, betaplease Dreamwidth, Beta Reader Wanted Tumblr; the beta search and find-me-a-beta Livejournal communities; or on fanfiction.net (for the Marvel films and the Marvel comics). Some are more active than others — a lot of beta readers can now be found in Discord communities, ready to be summoned with an @, so if you're active in a Stony Discord, we suggest trying your luck there, too!

We encourage anyone who is interested in cheering or betaing a Big Bang work (or other Stevetony and Steve/Tony works throughout the year - HE is coming up!) to register in the Cap-IM list right here!

Your Cap-IM BB event mods are available to help at all stages of the event, so please direct any questions or concerns to cap.im.events@gmail.com — we promise that we'll get back to you as soon as possible 💜

The Cap-Iron Man Beta Reader list is now in a new format so that the information is displayed in a more accessible way. You can sort through the available betas by either scrolling through the spreadsheet, or using the "Ctrl+F" and "create temporary filter" functions.

All the betas are new sign-ups who are currently active, and you can contact them directly through one of the methods listed. However, please respect that they are not under any obligation to beta your work if it doesn't suit them.

We are aware that life happens and availabilities change, so we'll be periodically updating the Cap-IM Beta Reader List, and sending out an email once a year to ensure that the people listed are still welcoming fics to beta. We are migrating our Cap-Iron Man beta reader list to a Google Sheet, and requesting that everyone who wants to volunteer their services as a beta reader — including those previously listed in the old document — sign up to be included. This list is going to replace the old one and will be linked across all of the Cap-Ironman community's channels.

If you want to use some of the details that you submitted to the now-defunct beta reader list, you will still be able to see the document (here's the link for ease ) for the next two weeks, after which it will become inactive and no longer be accessible to anyone.

Through our new beta reader list, it'll be easier for authors to search through available beta readers by canon, services, rating, word length, and so on, and the new method of signing up should be easily accessible to everyone!

To join the Beta Reader List, fill out this form!

To see the current list, view the Google Spreadsheet.

We have plenty of flexibility for different types of betaing (including cheer-reading!), and we welcome betas for all the Marvel universes in which Steve or Tony appear. If you already beta for someone but are willing to take on more fics, sign on up! If you are new to beta-reading but determined to help others improve their writing, we want you, too! We’ll be posting some guidelines on working with beta readers and how to be a good beta reader soon, so keep your eye out for those.

If at any stage after you sign up you want to update your details, please email cap.im.mod@gmail.com.

Remember, being on this list doesn't obligate you to beta anyone's fic. It's simply a place for interested writers to try to find someone who will beta read their work before posting. However, we do want this list to reflect active beta readers only, so that writers can find the help they need! This means that after you're added to the list, we may contact you periodically (no more than once a year) to confirm you're still active, and we encourage you to contact us at any time if your availability changes. If you want to indicate that you don't want to be contacted for a time, or no longer have an interest in beta reading, let us know. Lastly, if you are contacted at a time when you cannot beta read (for whatever reason), please notify the author.

UPDATE 2018/9/18 - Our beta list has been updated once again! Please head over to our new post for more information on our list and how to sign up!

Once again it is time that we update the beta readers list and this time we will migrate it to a gdoc, like we did with the The List of Podfic-friendly Steve/Tony Writers.

Many people are working on projects and may be looking for some help from willing beta readers. This list is going to replace the old one, and it will be linked to on the LJ and tumblr sidebars. If you would like to be added to this list, fill out the info below and email us at cap.im.mod@gmail.com. You can also comment on this post or on our Livejournal community.

If you need some guidelines on working with a beta as an author or being a betareader, here are some things to keep in mind when working with or as a beta:

Communication is key. Be up front with the kind of help and advice you’re looking for, and what sort of timeline you’re on (and authors, make sure you get your draft back with a few days left before your due date!). Talk about what’s going to happen–what the author wants, what the beta is willing to do. Make sure you both have similar ideas of what’s expected. If there are specific sections or aspects you’re worrying about, tell your beta. Maybe even mark it in the text with a comment or some highlighting. If you’re using Word or LibreOffice or similar, we suggest using Track Changes (it’s usually under the Edit menu in the toolbar), or in GoogleDocs you can use Suggestion mode. The comment tool can also be really useful.

And authors: when you get your story back, go through it! Look at the work your beta did and decide whether or not you want to keep the changes. If they asked questions, answer those questions, but also think about WHY they asked and what you could do to change your text so that your readers aren’t left with the same questions. If you still have questions for the reader perspective, ask. Communication doesn’t have to end just because you got the draft back. This is a collaborative process, and it goes on for as long as you both want it to.

Authors, make sure you thank your betas. Even if you disagree with everything they changed, they just gave you their editing skills for free and used their time to help you improve your story! Whether you say thanks privately, when you post, or both, be sure you express your appreciation. Betaing is a very behind-the-scenes part of fandom, and just like any other part of fandom, manners and acknowledgment are important in building both good friendships and good writers.

Betas, ask questions! Don’t feel like you have to confine yourself to grammar and syntax, think about the feel you get off a story and where it might be going. What would it take to really get it there? Does the characterization fit? Are there any universe-breaking problems that the story doesn’t adequately address? If you have an idea of something that could be tweaked or added, suggest it. Even if the author doesn’t like it, it might get them thinking of something else that really brings a scene together. Are you confused? Tell the author! Did you love a certain bit of dialogue? Definitely mark that. Even emoticons will do.

Authors want their stories to be read and enjoyed, and the more positive feedback you can give them now, the more strength they’re likely to have to really polish that draft up and make it shine. You’re probably the only person who’s going to read it anything like as closely as they are, and it can be a great opportunity to express the sorts of reactions that are difficult to distill into comments. “This scene is great!” noted next to something specific can hold a lot more weight than a general “I really liked this” comment on the fic over all.

Even if you get the rawest rough draft you’ve ever seen, find something good to say. Pick out things you liked. Sandwich negatives with positives when you can. Be constructive in your criticism, even if the author asks for the most detailed, scathing editing job you’ve ever done. This isn’t an anonymous copyedit service, this is fandom, and fandom is about connecting and enjoying something together.

A first-time read can be great for really getting the major ideas and emotions of the work, and you’re hopefully giving yourself enough time to do a second or third reading for the work of corrections and suggestions. If you make a change that’s not simple grammar, note WHY you’re making the change. If you find you’re making the same grammar change over and over, maybe explain the rule. Not all fanfic authors are native English speakers, and some of us who are have forgotten little details like how important commas can be :)

Beta List

Oct. 22nd, 2013 03:36 pm
[identity profile] mrhd.livejournal.com

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away this comm had a list of people who were willing to serve as betas for other authors! I would like to revive this list.

What is a beta?

A beta (reader) is rather like an editor. You can send them your fic when it is still in the rough stages, and they will go through it and edit, give feedback and suggestions and give a second opinion on your fic. Betas are not required for you to post fic in this comm, but they can be really helpful.

So if you would like to be a beta please reply to this post with the following format.

Subject Line/Top of Post: Beta for Hire

Username:
Universes you're familiar with: (i.e. 616, MCU, Ultimates)
What you're really good at: (i.e. characterization, grammar/spelling
What you WILL beta: You only have to fill out this one or the next one. If you will only beta fics of a specific type or two say so here. (i.e. will beta fluff, up to an R rating, and less than 8,000 words.)
What you WON'T beta: You only have to fill out this one or the last one. If you'll pretty much beta anything with a few exceptions say so here. (i.e. won't beta non-con or character death)
Contact preference: (i.e. PM, email, IM, carrier pigeons, etc.)

If you want an example, the first comment should be my filled out form.

What I'm looking to do is to compile and ever growing list, (perhaps also host it on Google Docs) that one can peruse when they want a beta.

If you are looking for someone to beta your story, feel free to contact anyone who fits your needs! If no one does, you can also post a request as a reply on this post.

Subject Line/Top of Post: Requesting Beta

Username:
Universe of fic:
What you want help with:
Genre, Rating, Warnings, Length, etc:
(anything about your fic that you think would be helpful for someone to know beforehand)
Contact preferences

As always, please feel free to ask questions either in a comment or as a PM to me.

It's almost 2012, so it's time for a new beta list. Before signing up as a beta or contacting someone on this list to do beta work for your fic, you might want to read the [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman discussion post on The Role of the Beta, and [livejournal.com profile] tsukinofaerii's post On Writing Fanfic: Love Your Beta. There are a lot of ways to use a beta, and reading these might help you pinpoint what kinds of services you want to offer as a beta, or what you are looking for in a beta as an author.

So you still would like to be a beta? )

I will organize the list as people sign up. I will also keep the list updated, so if any of the information you give changes, simply comment again. And authors, please remember that no one on this list is obligated to beta your fic. Just remember our biggest rule: be excellent to each other.

Beta Search

Hello!

New to the fandom, but I think I've mainlined pretty much everything since the Avengers trailer was released. So much love for this pairing, and between that trailer and XMFC and the Iron Man movies, I think I might be ready to repair the rift I've had with Marvel since Xmen Xtreme in the early aughts and actually start reading the comics again.

Anyway! Since it's November and I signed up for nano with the intent of writing all of the fic and Tony Stark is pretty much the greatest thing, ever, I come bearing porn. (Peace porn, so much more effective than olive branches, really!)

I'd love to have a second set of eyes go over it before posting. One that's familiar with the fandom and characters, and the lovely [livejournal.com profile] valtyr said that I could post a search here. (Thanks, bb! :) )

So, anyone up for beta reading ~4000 5000 words (OMG, what??) of Steve/Tony fisting? SPAG should be fine, but I'd really like some input on the dynamic and Steve's voice, in particular.

PM me if you're interested. Thank you!

Hello there!
I´m here to talk about something a lot of you might already be familiar with, but also something which everyone should know about:
The [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman  BETA LIST
Especially new members might not know about this (the original post was made almost two years ago), but it is extremely helpful and generally a very awesome thing.

What is that?
Basically, a list of people who have said that they´d want to be beta readers for you.

How is it organized?
First, there is a list of all people who have signed up; then that is followed by a group of readers with experiences with languages other than English, readers with special fields of knowledge and finally a group regarding canon knowledge.

How does it work?
If you need a beta, just go to the list, look for a reader who seems suitable for you, and then contact that person. You can generally contact people via the private message system, but a lot of people have contact information on their profiles (which are also linked to in the list). Then you just write to the reader, explain your situation and then see if it works out.
Example: You have written a fic set in France, then it may be best to look for a beta reader who is good at that langauge and maybe knows something about the culture. You have written a fic dealing with martial arts? You could look for a beta reader who also knows something about that.

Can I still sign up?
Of course; just leave a comment with your qualifications and I´ll add you to the list.
Example: Hello, I´m betareader01, I love correcting grammar, especially punctuation, and I know a lot about American history.

Also, you may find this post discussing the role of the beta interesting.

As always, if you have further questions, suggestions, critic, leave a comment here, ask the mods, etc.

ETA: since this list is admittedly old (at least parts of it), not all readers may be able to beta for you. Real life, time, other commitments, etc. can come in the way. Don´t give up if you don´t immediately get a response or find a reader, we´re all just human. I´ll contact the readers and will update the list accordingly. Just be patient, everything will work out.

ETA2: Also, if you are currently on the list and want to change something or want to be removed from this list, no problem. Leave a coment or write a pm and I´ll handle it.
[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com
I know I haven't been writing much lately. I've been horribly busy and injured. Sadness abounds on multiple levels.

However, I currently have plenty of time to beta! Don't be shy! I'll read anything for this community! It can be long or short, multi-chapter or PWP, established universe or AU. You can be a veteran writer or new to the whole shebang. (Yes, I said 'shebang.') I'm pretty good with grammar and style. I'm also very open-minded.

If you have questions, just PM me, shoot me an email at c.taylor.circuits@gmail.com, or contact me on google talk. It'll be fun. I promise.
[identity profile] saraid.livejournal.com
okay, now i really need a beta. for the shorter story that i don't think will make it to the big bang, and for the big bang story as my lovely beta just had to bow out due to rl pressures. so i'm kinda, um, stuck. i think the shorter story is done and perhaps the rest of it should be a sequel, but i really need a second opinion on that. both are tony h/c, one over 20k and the other right at 12k.

i could beg, but i don't do it very well....
[identity profile] runenklinge.livejournal.com
The Superpandamod has just asked me if I wanted to be in charge of the comm´s beta list.
And I said: "Yes"

From now on I´m keeping the list up to date, but that only works with input from your side.

So, when something comes up, like...
you have an important exam and won´t be able to bet til...March 2009, write me a pm, or leave a comment on the Official List to inform me and I´ll update the list with the current information.
If something else comes up that is in a way beta-relevant and you feel that it should be added to the list, let me know.

If you´re either new to the comm and want to be a beta  or you´re not new, but suddenly feel the need to offer your beta-services - let me know!

I´m in charge of something, yay!!

Also, panda (I know you´re reading this) can you add the beta list to the tag list on the left?
PS: You also forgot to add pandax as an official mod there. You should definetely mention your new position there^^

[identity profile] runenklinge.livejournal.com
Since I had to terminate the first try (thanks you html...for adding useless </a><b> signs to the usernames that didn´t show up in RTE and couldn´t be erased from the html-version without messing up the entire post.

BETA List:

General )I'm a good beta in terms of helping the writer's work to be clear, making the writer sensitive to stylistic inconsistencies. I do prefer to work with googledocs, and if you don't have a gmail account, I'll gladly send you an invite.

Depending on the complexity of the fic, turn around can be from six hours to twenty four (anything over 10k will be, understandably, longer).

I do try to be a thorough beta, and as a result of this, writers' feelings can be bruised. I beta with the understanding that the work is important, not necessarily the writer's ego. I'm willing to go gentle with the concrit, but I won't mess you around, because being a fangirl helps no one.

You can contact me via pm at either LJ or DW.General ) I'm not here for a beta but for resources!
General )I know grammar and word use, as well as Shakespearean grammar, so I can grammar-check Thor. Both are primarily from a good organic linguistic sense rather than formal education, so I tend to say 'this sounds wrong; this would be better' rather than citing specific rules
- theaviatorfifi: (Info)
i have superexcellent knowledge of spelling (uk and us) and grammar, but though i know what's right and wrong i agree with bending a few rules for the sake of style and flow.
- lovelokest: (Info): but I've beta'd before in other fandoms. I have a good grasp of story flow, picking out plot holes, characterization and what sounds clunky. My schedule is hectic right now, but I generally can get short things (under 2000 words) done in a dayThe best way to get in touch with me is lovelokest at gmail dot com. I'm terrible at checking PMs and I don't check my Yahoo email address often..
- piratewilde: (Info) . I am a English Major, and am prone to edited as I read. I also tend to read a lot
- red_vlvtn: (Info) I am also willing to beta. I'm an English major who always got A's in English in high school, and I got 4's on both AP tests. I also wrote and edited for my high school's literary magazine, so with all those things combined, I'm a notorious grammar Nazi. The best ways to get in touch with me are AIM and e-mail, both of which are listed on my user info. I'll read and edit just about anything, but my schedule sometimes gets crowded, so I may not have time for your epic. Just ask me, and I'll let you know.
- grand_duc (Info
My knowledge of comics is pretty bare. And I'm probably the last person you want to ask for gramar.. I'm a native french speaker . I've grown up in France and I speak a bit of spanish.
- fancy_galloway (Info) Beta for half a dozen fandoms. Anthropology major, English minor. I color-code my edits!
- mozzarellaroses (Info) Grammar nazi, word usage fairy, slang dragon (I'm running out of silly words for this) , I'm one of only five people who got an A- in our entire batch of over 500 students last quarter, and have been getting A- for every quarter (with only one person in the entire batch getting A) and I've read a grand total of 10,950 books approximately since I was eight years old, which was eight years ago. I have beta'd people for years now, and I hope you won't be put off by my young age. English is not my first language, but I am most proficient in it.  Also, I will squee like a fangirl over your stories afterward, so my professionalism will take its little breaks. :)
- tsimiko (Info):I haven't beta'd in forever but I'd love to start doing it again. My canon knowledge is admittedly a little sparse: films, recent cartoons/anime, Civil War, Post-Civil War, and the recent Stark Resilient line
- guindas (Info) I have never Beta'd before, but my native language is Spanish and I am a grammar nazi in that language. My mail is on my userinfo :)i have the time to beta'd until april, but with the exception of January,.
- shariangel (Info) I've beta'd before, and for a while reviewed and gave concrit on request. I've been noted before to be critical, but fair, General )Language Specific ) I speak some Japanese and a tiny smattering of Spanish.
- grand_duc:
I'm a native french speaker though. I've grown up in France and I speak a bit of spanish
- tsimiko: I also have moderate knowledge of Spain, Barcelona specifically, having studied abroad there for a few months
- guindas: my native language is Spanish and I am a grammar nazi in that language.
- shariangel: I am able to understand and spell in Australian English, American English and British English, though some slang in the latter two may catch me (I will ask about it though)..Language Specific )

Special Talents )know a fair bit about the Renaissance and the middle ages generally, and more specifically about crafts of the time, the War of the Roses and genealogy of English nobles (and how to find out more, which can be almost as useful), and heraldry.
I do some metalworking, although unfortunately, no forging, just jewelery. It's amazingly difficult to find classes in forging and weaponsmithing.
- theaviatorfifi:
good knowledge of the military/us air force, a hell of an interest in military aviation, and a reasonably good but non-technical (as if fanfic needs the actual math :B) knowledge of aerospace engineering and quantum physics.
- lovelokest: Areas of expertise: I've been in a nursing environment for ages, am biology major and have written a lot of kinky porn (hi, SGA!). Kinks I won't do: water sports, scat and age play., also no death fic unless everyone is alive at the end
- red_vlvtn: My areas of expertise include: psychology, civil law, American history, singing, string instruments, cooking (especially baking), English-style horseback riding, dogs, and cats big and small. My knowledge of canon is admittedly not the best you will find on this comm, but my boyfriend can and will answer any questions. He is also very knowledgeable about video games and various scientific disciplines
- fancy_galloway: Anthropology major, English minor.
- mozzarellaroses: I have an extensive knowledge of mythology
- timiko: I've been formally trained and have worked as a college-level writing tutor for three years
- guindas: I'm from Chile (South America) and know pretty well the history of my country..
- shariangel: I'm a second year Maths/Computing major, so I guess I could be helpful with techy questionsSpecial Talents )Canon Knowledge: )This is the second try. Forgive me for not using the "Username" option since all my entries get messed up when I have to edit them afterwards. (<lj></a>...and so on).

If you have anything to add, if I have forgotten something worth mentioning, or have gotten something wrong....tell me.
ps: you rock

pps: due to the update-status, I am in the process of contacting our "old" readers who signed up in 2008 if they want to remain on this list. Those who have already replied or signed up in 2010 will be displayed with a blue username (organisational thing, makes it easier for me).

It has been brought to my attention (thanks [livejournal.com profile] jynx ) that perhaps a list of possible beta readers is in order. With the relative activity we will hopefully have until January next year (and just you wait what panda and I have in store for you*evil laugh*) I think a list of people willing to beta would help everyone.

So, if you want to be a beta-reader, please comment here!
I´ll create a beta list with all of our resources.

Our comm will be bigger, smarter and mor resourceful than ever!

Also, if you have other talents (like...a gazillion foreign languages and a doctor in medicine, martial art skills and  profound knowledge of the Norse Gods...or possibly the Skrulls) tell me to add those.

...why do I want a picture of either Steve or Tony (or both) all intellectual with glasses?
