S/T songs that hit me.
As I've gotten further into Marvel, and thus farther into Steve/Tony, I've come across several songs that really struck me as Steve/Tony. Seeing as how none of them really fit together, a fanmix would be kind of strange, so I will be doing a little series of songposts (and if this is against the rules, mods, throw something at me or something) to share with these songs with you. Since I have a habit of writing little essays in connection to the songs to explain the similarities, you may be able to understand my reasoning behind them.
Joanna Newsom- What We Have Known
Lyrics:
The tadpole boy in [tas?] Basalt
The seashorse horsing in the salt
The owlet in his greenery
The narwhal in his cup of sea
They all believe
They all believe
( I think this refrain is saying "everyone is where they're supposed to be", and they all believe that they belong there.)
But collusion bleeds through back allies
From parapets that end on feet
When one is weak they discretely meet
They throw the bones into the street
And they progress
And we retreat
(This describes the time between the House of M and the beginning of CW, where the Illuminati gather and Tony is the one that takes the grunt of accusation.)
And all the books our fathers wrote
Are in the middle of the road
Little by little we implode
History brittle, brown and broke
We can't remember what was spoke
So we stare in wonder at the smoke
What it begets is born alone
We know not now what we have known
(Tony's dissillusionment and his vision of his stance during the war, and how, though he's trying his hardest, he's still losing this battle by winning.)
Ladies; breathe deep against your whalebones
For your children come home made of stone
(Everyone's hardening during the Civil War, and how it effects the rest of the world.)
The terror seething sees a way
Or like the wheezing of the bay
In miniature agonies
They travel westward on the breeze
Bring us all to our knees
(The effect of Captain America's death.)
The dappled horse the sorrowed mare
With eyes that do not see but stare
Beneath boots as black as malachi
He drives a nag into the nigh
Into the nigh
(The Confession.)
And all the baby boys we've born
With eyes averted from the storm
Sent off to die in perfect form
We know now what we have known
(Steve's passage, his farwell from everyone. "It wasn't supposed to be like this.")
Satellite photos [rederic?]
See how the euphemism stick
And when they come back broke and burned
Those who return have no return
(Secret War= thoroughly fucked up Tony.)
Song:
Wolf Parade: Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
Lyrics:
I got a hand
So I got a fist
So I got a plan
It's the best that I can do
Now we'll say it's in God's hands
But God doesn't always have the best goddamn plans, does he?
(Tony's planning of what's to come, and his knowing he'll be the bad guy.)
I ain't quite the beauty
Pulls out two guns and shoots at the pretty, pretty pure white--
Gotta keep thinking, things, hunters and kings
To block out the view, I gotta get
New bell to ring
New song to sing
A steady hand to ring
A readiness of things I do
I gotta get a new plan to bring to the people
People I can trick them into thinking anything
Oh rust it just right in the light
It's gold, it's gold
(Tony's determination after Steve's Death, and his knowing he's a bit of fraude.)
I got
Water and holes in my hands
I'm a digger of holes in the land
It's the easiest way
And you know
It's the easiest way
So I go
(His realization "It wasn't worth it.")
Lalalalalala
I got water and I got holes, so
Lalalalalala
Sons and daughters of hungry ghosts
I got water and I got holes, so
Lalalalalala
Sons and daughters of hungry ghosts
Lalalalalala
I got a hand
So I got a fist
So I got a plan
It's the best that I can do
Now we'll say it's in God's hands
But God doesn't always have the best goddamn plans, does he?
I can't believe in the guns
I can't believe in the view
(If Tony doesn't believe all the horrible things he's done were the right thing to do, what does he have left?")
I sing, sing
Lalalalalala
I can't believe in those other things
I got a new plan to bring
I got a new song to sing
And it goes
Lalalalalala
And you know it's the easiest way
Song:
Pink Floyd- "Wish You Were Here"
Lyrics: so, so you think you can tell
heaven from hell,
blue skys from pain.
can you tell a green field
from a cold steel rail?
a smile from a veil?
do you think you can tell?
and did they get you to trade
your heros for ghosts?
hot ashes for trees?
hot air for a cool breeze?
cold comfort for change?
and did you exchange
a walk on part in the war
for a lead role in a cage?
(Pretty much the entire CW and its aftermath.)
Song:
I usually get a lot more comprehensive, but this was just the basic idea. Would you like me to continue?
