Spam and Abuse Concerns

Hello Cap_Ironman,

We hope you are all doing great! We thank you for taking our fic post suggestions to heart!

Additionally we have received a number of PMs with other concerns about the comm and want to thank those members for coming to us with their problems, and we hope you continue to do so! With all of these concerns in mind we just wanted to say something pretty blatantly and clearly that way no one can accuse us of beating around the bush. This isn’t meant to threaten anyone and it’s certainly not meant to scare anyone off, so again ALL OF YOU please PM us if you have any problems. :D Okay, here we go:

With increased concerns on quality control here on the comm, we have implemented a “we highly encourage you to obtain a beta for fic over 500 words” suggestion, as well as the addition of a spot in your headers where you either thank your beta ^__^ or say that you didn’t use one, just so everyone knows what they’re getting themselves into. <3 See the profile page for details. And be sure to visit the beta list if you are looking for a beta.

We have also had continued complaints about abuse and spamming on the comm. Abuse leads to a less then favorable quality of fic and art, and is considered to include extreme and continued OOC development. Spamming leads to other peoples’ work being lost in the woodwork, which is something none of us wants. To rectify the situation we have made “continued spamming and/or abuse” a banable offense. But do not live in fear of whether or not your post was spammy or abusive. If you are in violation of the spam or abuse rule we will PM you with a warning and suggestions to help. If you haven’t gotten a PM, you aren’t doing anything wrong. :D

Just for further clarification on what constitutes ABUSE and what constitutes SPAMMING:

Spamming: pertains to instances in which the poster posts content unrelated to Steve, Tony, or the Avengers, or makes multiple posts of the same subject matter in the same day without trying to compress things into one post. If you have an on-going comic, story, etc. please wait 2 days until posting the next section so nothing gets washed away and people lose track of everyone’s posts. Exceptions are fic or art of higher word count, quality, or separation needed for rating reasons: i.e. “pairing a G rated chibi with unrelated NC-17 sex scenes.”

Abuse: pertains to posts with extreme and noticeable OOC development and little to no attempts at revision for quality. This does not mean we are cracking down on Crack or AU's, but please try to remember if you specialize in these sectors there is a difference between humor and blatant disregard for characterization.

ETA: For clarification's sake, the "please wait two days to post" rule is only for fic or art or comics that has 5 or more parts, and for flashfic/art (i.e. art or fic that was done very quickly with little to no editing for quality or characterization).

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions please either PM us, or comment on this post, or HERE.

Much love people!

Panda and Lan

This is probably an appallingly n00b question, but how does the beta list work? I mean, obviously it is a list of people willing to beta. Do I just pick someone from the list and go and bother them in their journal? Comment to the post saying 'desperately seeking beta, have candy'?

I fear doing something terribly inappropriate, and hilarity ensuing.

I'd recommend PM'ing the person, which you can do through their profiles. :)

yes, exactly what smilingskull said :D

just be sure to include any warnings of what your fic might be about-- like some people might not want to beta zombies, or ultimate!fic, or character death.

Yep. PM us or email if it's been provided. I've had a few people PM/email me and it's worked out well so far. I mean, if we didn't mind beta-ing stuff, we wouldn't have put ourselves on the list :D

I don't use a beta on anything under a few thousand words or that's a solo project, and I have no problem adding a note to those fics saying so (I've actually gone back and added a "no beta" note to the latest Snow Queen post just to put an example up and get myself into the habit of it).

Just on the off chance that [livejournal.com profile] seanchai and I suddenly become vastly more productive - are there any rules on posting co-written and solo-written things very close together?

[identity profile] pandanoai.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
::hugs:: thanks so much! yes, that's perfect!

and i know you're just using the snow queen as an example to remind yourself, but for anyone else reading this: you don't have to go back and change any past posts- this is just something to be implemented in future posts.

and no, there are no rules on posting co-written and solo-written things very close together. it isn't a problem as of now, but if it does become a problem in the future we'll consider implementing something-- and let everyone know with fair warning that we have done so :D

Ah good - I was just wondering, because I know we aren't the only people who co-write fics.

brat using that journal for answering that one! ^_~

Elly and I also wondered this. *sees answer above*

We also wondered though exactly what constituted "high word count" and "on-going."

For example, when Elly posted "Loose Control," she posted part II within 24 hours due to high demand of for the second part. Would that now be considered spam? Or is a two-part fic split up not considered on-going?

Or by mentioning the quality of fics, are you saying this rule is meant only apply to flash-fics (fics written very fast and often with minimal editing such as what I write for [livejournal.com profile] bsgflash).

^__^

"high word count"- for fics that have to be split into two parts due to length, posting them both one after another is just fine--

"on-going"- just refers to a looooong fic- like, 5 parts or more. Sorry we weren't more clear about that.

this really does have a lot to do with flash-fics and the like.

i hope that answered your questions!

Cool! Thanks so much for the fast reply. That answered my questions/concerns ^__^

I kinda thought Flash-fics might be what you meant but you know, its easier to check now than later. So, if I write a Steve/Tony fic during lunch at work and post it during the same lunch break, I won't then post the one I wrote during my 15 minutes break until 2-days later - got it ^__^

I'll also assume the works for art as well, and things I mean as finished art are gonna be ok to post one after the other, but those random doodles I do at work should be posted only once every two days, right?

I think "high word count" means things like when a one-shot fic (or single chapter of a multi-part fic) is too long to fit in a single post, so you do two posts together (ex: Chapter 2a & Chapter 2b).
