Has anyone read it?

I was just wondering if I was the only fangirl to arrive early to my local comic book store to pick up the latest Captain America (and by Captain America I mean Reborn).

I'm up for some discussion! What did everyone else think? :)

[identity profile] skund.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I read it! I thought it was a little... pedestrian. But, y'know, first issue and everything it's mostly recapping (heh, pun) and talking. Loved the final page.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, pedestrian's a good word for it. I'm hoping it really was just first issue syndrome and not a trend we'll see in the other issues.

[identity profile] me-likey-slashy.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
the first issue was pretty good! Som parts were kinda like, oooh, thats kinda lame-ish. but i wanna see where it'll progress. Because they could totally make it worthwhile.
YAY STEVE! <33

I mean, not much really happened yet. But of course I squeed-the-fuck-out anyway just because it's Cap.

I thought it was flat out bad. Sloppy art, sloppy writing, and massively uncreative. To the point that it's off my pull list.

Here's the thing, last time I got a first issue and though HEY this kinda was . . . not great. At all. But I'm sure it'll get better, I got burned because it never got better. So now my feeling is, at this point, if it starts weak it probably is weak.

SPOILERS
I just found there whole way of brining him back to be tired to the point of annoyance. Lost in time? REALLY WTF.
THAT's the best they could do?

And Sharon's "Magic Memories" strike me as too easy. It doens't look planned out, it looks sloppy. And the writing of it all, god okay I know, we need a re-cap, but gosh darn, this was badly done.

And the art -_- I love Bryan Hitch in Ultimates I was SO EXCITED he'd be the artist here, but the art's just no there for me. It loosk rushed and choppy, and OMG WTF is wrong with Sharon's ponytail 0.o

Honestly the only two things I got excited about were Cap and Bucky's D-Day outfits (and actually that was quite a bit of squeee), because those were great and I want whoever designed them to be working on costumes for the movie. Also seeing little Steve was sorta nice.

Actually, come to think of it, I kinda liked Hank in this.

So yeah, I was just *meh* about the whole thing and I'm gonna have to skim each issue now before buying.

I didn't actually think they could make me uninterested in Steve coming back, but they did. ^^;;;

Something has to be pretty bloody awful to get off my pull list (Case and point: I stuck it out through all of Avengers/Invaders and there's money I'll never see again!),

On the whole, I enjoyed it though. I'm not sure what's up with the women's hair, but Bucky looked okay, and it's so nice to see Hank not acting like a complete ass hole (Mighty Avengers is no longer on my pull list).

I loved the D-Day outfits too!

In conclusion, I wasn't hugely excited, but I enjoyed it, and I'm hoping that it's mostly set up. Also, it's really nice to see Steve.

[identity profile] ani-bester.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty broke so something only has to annoy me to get off my pull list. *L*

But yeah I stuck through Avengers/Invaders too, which is actually why I don't want to go through that again *LOL* And if it is good I can buy Reborn when they come, but I won't feel obligated to. Anything on my pull list I consider buying to be an obligation, so I *really* gotta want it.

Heh, I thought Bucky looked kinda . . . off. Don't know. Pinched maybe? But man, seeing the art Hitch did in Ultimates, and then this, it hurts me. It's like seeing Larocca's Iron Man stuff and then seeing his art in Ultimate XMen. I'm all WTF Larocca, you are better than this *flail* That's how I felt about Hitch's art ^^

Hank not being an ass was nice. Hank was . . Hank.
So how long until we get Jan back ^__^

Also, it's really nice to see Steve.
Heh,I think part of why Steve being as back is not as big a deal for me is I was sorta not reading anything 616 except New Avengers, so between Ultimates, Marvel Adventures, and Invaders I never went long without Steve It got to the point where I'm like ehhh so Steve is not in 616. I don't read much 616 anyway =P

. . . plus I'm still squeeing over Toro being back so ummm *cough*
Marvel just put my one Marvel OTP into 616 and my fangirl glee is distracted. *blush*

I don't have a point of comparison, but it didn't annoy me nearly as much as Larocca's Iron Man stuff (which got that series dropped by me).

I don't know. In that Jan's a woman, I suspect they'll leave her dead.

I've only been reading Captain America, New Avengers, Captain Britain and a couple of minis. No Ultimates. So Steve = yay.

I thought of you when I read issue 12 -g-

Also seeing little Steve was sorta nice.

I had to read this line twice before I realised what you meant.

The last two full-pages of Steve were pretty nice - the full-length pose and the final close-up. Earlier art was less good, yeah. I didn't like Steve's red spats, and while I didn't dislike the helmet, it makes me grouchy when 616 and 1610 become less distinguishable.

I was meh about the massive exposition dump - and see, I haven't really been following Cap, and it made little sense, so it doesn't really work as exposition to those new to it, and it's unnecessary to those who have been following.

I shall flip through the next one in the shop, and if it has pretty Steve, I shall buy it. I could kind of get into Key Points of Steve's Life re-told with nice art. That relies on nice art, though.

You're right. The D-Day outfits were the only good parts of the comic. SPECTACULAR!

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda think Hitch was let down by his inker. I'd have to check, but it didn't look like the same guy that did such a superlative job on Ultimates.

For the rest I was pretty meh, too -- it's just one of those things I feel I have to read in order to be up to speed on Steve's return. Which I favor without reservation, heh.

Lost in time? REALLY WTF.

Seriously, this made me lol. In one of my fics I purposefully sat down and thought, "okay, what's the crackiest, craziest, most contrived thing I could do" and was like "OH STEVE GOT LOST IN THE TIME STREAM."

lolololol canon.

[identity profile] melisus.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said in my own LJ: WORST.FUCKING.IDEA.EVER.

[identity profile] marinarusalka.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The first issue didn't make a strong impression on me -- didn't hate it, didn't love it. It seemed mostly to be recap with a bit of retcon thrown in. But I kind of like the "unstuck in time" idea, and am interested to see what they do with it.

Also, any comic with a sympathetic Hank is okay by me.

[identity profile] morgulq.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It seemed mostly to be recap with a bit of retcon thrown in.

My brain has decided to do the Fandom Remix and has interpreted that as Captain Jack Harkness spiking Reborn!Cap's drink with Retcon in a pub in Wales.

My brain is weeeiiiird...

I'm both kinda of blah and a bit bouncy about it. Let's just combine and divide and say I'm on the happy side of Meh.

I mean, it's a bit too easy, yeah, but at the same time...hell of a way to play the "Life flashing before thine eyes" thing. It'll work as an introduction to the character for movie!peeps who I'm sure they intend the TPB for but not for people who are already paying attention.

I dunno. It probably says a lot about me that I'm more interested in Steve than Captain America.

Gah...I'll think it through later. When the Apple Sourz has worn off.

[identity profile] neptunedream.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what to think. It just seems that lately, lowering standards seems to be the right thing to do if you're going to enjoy Marvel at all. Things have fallen apart, the writing's gotten sloppy and the plots are dragging...I don't know. I'm keeping up with all of it just for the sake of keeping up, I think, with some halfhearted hope that eventually we'll see a re-convergence of the original order of things, to some extent.

Okay, I'm rambling. Bottom line: It was fine. Nothing lately has been great.

But... I don't know about anyone else, but I felt strangely compelled to kiss the picture of D-Day Steve on the last page of the ish. Pffff

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it. Hmmm. I think I'll wait on the trade... or find other means, whatever is better.

He's lost in time! Who will save him!?

Can we get the Doctor up in here?!

TARDIS to the rescue!

[identity profile] cursor-mundi.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the same thing when I read it, myself! The conversation between Osborn and Zola just cracked me up.

In fact, I even posted about it at my journal, here (http://cursor-mundi.livejournal.com/12769.html), if you're interested...

Those were my thoughts too - especially when Sharon was called a 'constant'. I thought, 'Oh, the Doctor's not going to like that. You and Jack should start a club.'

[identity profile] morgulq.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly, Sharon is Romana in disguise. Hence her awesome and super-human ability to bring everyone down a notch when needed.

[identity profile] tavella.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I really kind of dislike that, the way Sharon is defined by their relationship. Brubaker has really screwed Sharon over but good. First he had her be a pregnant weepy victim for a year, and now she's only important for fetching Steve back.

The thing I liked about Steve/Sharon was that they were (mostly) written as two mature adults with similar interests and passions, who had a complicated and not particularly smooth relationship. I *liked* that it wasn't One True Love Eternal Bond; it felt real.

[identity profile] garrideb.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that pregnant victim thing was squicky as all hell. You really nailed the awesomeness of the Steve/Sharon love earlier on. One of my favorite scans of her sums it up too:

What I wouldn't give for Independent!Adult!Sharon to return...

[identity profile] tavella.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
That's a great page! And that's absolutely it -- Sharon's a pro, just as much as Cap is. They both have deeply felt emotions, but their duty and reason come first.

My comicbook store guy told me to lower my expectations when I picked it up, and he was right. Not bad, but not good either. I was very surprised that they went with the whole pulled out of timeline thing - it's just so straightforward and standard.

I am interested enough to keep buying, though.

[identity profile] zombieandgrits.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It was...hmmm..the art bugged me and the story telling was kinda :\. Lets hope it will get better in the future.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm refusing to read any of the newer stuff except Reborn. >.> I want Cap back and things fixed before I'll dip into the current mess. I mean, could they have screwed up a whole universe more? But if I don't read it, it hasn't happened, so...

I think it pretty much fell face-first into the sea of cliche, but it wasn't too bad. It needed some desperate work on the flow; my beta would smack me from three states over if I jumped around that much in a story. The gun thing made me face palm -- the last time I saw that bit of phlebotinum was in Land of the Lost. I'm kind of hoping the guys in charge see the giant re-set button that anything to do with time travel is and punch it hard.

But Cap revisiting his own past? Definitely has potential. If the writers don't use it, I'm sure a fanfic writer will.

[identity profile] ohfetus.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point Brubaker is just fucking with us. VONNEGUT REFERENCES? REALLY?? I can appreciate a good reference but this was one was so contrived and lame. "Originally I had a seagull going Pee-too-tweet! too." (http://twitter.com/brubaker/status/2425562782) Argh! I mean, I'm gonna read it because I love Steve, but it's just kind of lame.

[identity profile] jianna.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I would have liked it more if he had done that and made the reference more blatant. Although I think it's actually "Poo-tee-weet"? Slaughterhouse-5 was one of my favorite books in high school.

Granted, that still doesn't make it a basis for this story.

I'm definitely in the "it was mediocre" camp, overall.

[identity profile] booster-blue.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Once I read about the whole TIME BULLET OF TIME thing, I immediately thought, "Soooo Steve is out there chilling out with Batman in the Time Stream. Fantastic."

I'm staying cautiously optimistic about it all.
