Finally!

Actors Confirm Auditions Are Underway For Captain America

THE CASTING process for Marvel's Captain America movie is under way.

Los Angeles-based up-and-coming actor Anderson Davis, who expressed an interest in the role here on The Geek Files in June last year, tells me auditions are going on at present and that he hopes to try for the role over the next few days.

Davis (pictured), who's an ex-athlete and also a fitness model, says he believes the role should be filled by an unknown. In a later piece I ran here, he responded to comments he had received as a result of the first article.

Recently, actor and model Rick Malambri said he had tried for the part, while Chuck actor Ryan McPartlin says he'd like to wield the shield although his response suggested he hadn't screen-tested or been officially approached.

Comic Book Movie reported that Wade Harlan (pictured above) had auditioned and also that American actor Johnny Pacar (pictured below) tweeted with this message on January 18: "Just read for Captain America. What a role to get. If only."

The 28-year-old looks, to me, more like sidekick Bucky or perhaps Steve Rogers before he takes the supersoldier serum that transforms him into the physically-perfect hero.

Previously, Twilight's Kellan Lutz and Chuck star Zachary Levi have both said they are interested in playing the hero, along with Sam Worthington who turned up at an interview in a Captain America T-shirt to make his enthusiasm clear.

Meanwhile, 6ft 5ins actor/model Derek Theler (pictured below) tweeted on January 22: "Call me Steve Rogers" followed by "Captain America tomorrow!"

One Tree Hill actor Robert Buckley (pictured above) has said he wants the role, with Geekweek reporting the 28-year-old as saying: "Well, hands down I would be Captain America. Yeah, it's kind of a no contest right there.

"Having said that, there are so many great books out there, that I'm going to go ahead and just... if Captain America didn't work out, there are a bevy of good choices out there."

The First Avenger: Captain America, directed by Joe Johnston, is set for release on July 22, 2011. The character will then appear in The Avengers team-up movie in 2012.

Captain America is the alter-ego of Second World War soldier Steve Rogers, whose capabilities were enhanced to their peak by a supersoldier serum.

Hurled by an explosion into the North Atlantic ocean, he remained frozen in suspended animation until his body was found and revived by the Avengers decades later.

The character featured in a movie serial in 1944 and then a 1990 film starring Matt Salinger.

A couple days ago there was a Captain America Casting Speculation post at [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt if case you missed it.

Here is what seems to be the top sixteen contenders for the shield:

Jensen Ackles age:31 height:6' hair:brown eyes:hazel
John Barrowman age:42 height:5'11 hair:brown eyes:blue
Matt Damon age:41 height:5'10 hair:brown eyes:blue
Leonardo DiCaprio age:35 height:5'11 hair:blonde eyes:blue
Jason Lewis age:38 height:6'1 hair:blonde eyes:blue
Kellan Lutz age:24 height:6'1 hair:blonde eyes:blue
Ryan McPartlin age:34 height:6'1 hair:blonde eyes:blue
Chris Pine age:29 height:6' hair:brown eyes:blue
Brad Pitt age:46 height:5'11 hair:blonde eyes:blue
Jeremy Renner age:39 height:5'10 hair:brown eyes:brown
Alexander Skarsgard age:33 height:6'4 hair:blonde eyes:blue
Will Smith age:41 height:6'2 hair:black eyes:black
Jason Statham age:37 height:5'10 hair:brown eyes:hazel
Channing Tatum age:29 height:5'11 hair:brown eyes:green
Sam Worthington age:33 height:6'2 hair:brown eyes:blue
Mark Valley age:45 height:5'11 hair:blonde eyes:blue

So that's the latest!

As for my two cents, Lord, I don't even know anymore. I'm on the dying ship of Jensen Ackles. Yes.... I know it's a pipe dream. Until they actually cast someone other than him I'm going to enjoy my vacation in Shangri La. (Hmm... Jensen and Robert...)

If Marvel was doing a film about current 616-universe Steve Rogers than it would be Mark Valley or bust for me. Valley is Steve Rogers, the problem is I don't think he's right for the direction they are taking the origin story. The production would also have to work around his Human Target schedule. That would mean production would have to wrap by August; that is so not enough time if production starts in June. (And selfishly, I'm enjoying my weekly Steve Rogers, Rorschach, and Emerson Cod snark fest each week. I really want him to keep doing Human Target.)

Thus... I would love to see PATRICK WILSON

ALSO!

I'm concerned about Red Skull (Ralph Fiennes or Christoph Waltz PLZ & THX U!).

I'm incredibly biased in favour of Sam Worthington for pretty much any role, oh man, the guy is most definitely not 6'2". 5'9" or 5'10" at the absolute most. He's build and solid but he's not particularly tall. That would be my only aesthetic concern for him as Cap - he just wouldn't dwarf people the way Cap should.

But, what it really boils down to for me is that whatever actor they choose has to be able to nail Steve's presence (so, he has to be a great actor) and he has to have a warm face, not menacing. If they manage those two things, I'll be happy.

In terms of pure looks and height, I'm liking Derek Theler, he's pretty. And he's got lovely blue eyes, just needs a bleach job.

Oh I agree, I'll be content as long as whoever plays Steve is taller than RDJ, I was just saying. I have no idea where anyone would get the idea that Sam Worthington was over 6 feet tall. I'm pretty sure he's only an inch or two taller than Zoe Saldana (without high heels), and she's not that tall.

(Edited because TALLER, not shorter. It's too late for talking.)

Yes yes. Those are qualities that Sam possesses, IMO, but as I said, I'm biased towards him and his beautiful face. :D

When I first saw a commercial for Human Target my initial reaction was, "STEVE ROGERS?! WHAT?!"

I have to argue against Worthington on the basis that, from the performances I've seen, the man can not hold any variation of an American accent worth a damn, and even if you were to use the argument that Steve's the son of immigrants and would pick up their vocal patterns, they were Irish, not Australian.

Dude, thank you! That's exactly what I think. I was wondering if I was alone with this idea given that the whole internet seems to think that Jensen is the answer.

It's such a nitpicky thing, but I swear to God, nothing about the actual crafting of a movie makes me gnaw on the straw of my giant soda in annoyance like accent!fail (plotwise, it's a whole different story, but you get what I mean). Even shit CGI doesn't compare.

[identity profile] sunshineclouds.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well I say Mark Valley because he's perfect. I know he's a little bit old for the role but seriously, HE'S PERFECT!

Anyway, I'll be happy with Patrick Wilson or Aaron Eckhart. I just hope they won't cast some pretty-model-turned-actor guy or I'll be very disappointed.

Ohhh, and he must have amazing chemistry with RDJ!

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I would LOVE Mark Valley as Steve Rogers. He'd work so well, he's got a military background, he's got the action scene experience....

Also, since RDJ is middle aged, it would be weird to have a Steve who was significantly younger than him (like Kellan Lutz) and would maybe draw too much attention to RDJ's age as he gets older (if he does a few of the movies *crosses fingers*).

[identity profile] norinoricat.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I will never be able to picture Patrick Wilson as anyone other than Joe Pitts from Angel's in America

I would love John Barrowman for the role even though I know it would never happen.

[identity profile] sunshineclouds.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
That was amazing! I already liked Aaron before TDK but when I finally watched it I was like
OMG MARRY ME!!!

Hell yes! Well, I'm not sure about Barrowman because he's Captain Jack Harkness for me and that would be distracting but I so need my epic Steve/Tony in the movies, it's the only thing I'm asking for :D

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I totally get what you mean ^.^

It would be really odd to see RDJ fanboying someone who was not doing the Cap role justice. Plus, they'll definitely have to make sure it's someone with a strong presence, or else RDJ will steal every scene without trying.

[identity profile] viva-la-yaoi.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
See, I rather like John Barrowman - he's fantastic as Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood, rather good looking, and gay (haha). He's a good actor and I think he could pull off the role if he tried.

I've never seen Jason Lewis in anything, but as far as looks go, I could picture him as Cap - a strong jaw and a handsome face, blonde and blue eyed, athletic looking and confident. Just about the right height too...

(Also, Will Smith? Really? People really want him to play Cap? I thought that was a joke...)

Well whoever they pick, I hope it's not just that actor is super famous or whatever. Steve is so iconic that giving someone the role just because they're pretty seems wrong; they need to be able to pull off Captain America's strength and utter confidence as well as Steve Rogers' more gentle, friendly, all around good guy air.
