Actors Confirm Auditions Are Underway For Captain America
A couple days ago there was a Captain America Casting Speculation post at
ohnotheydidnt if case you missed it.
So that's the latest!
As for my two cents, Lord, I don't even know anymore. I'm on the dying ship of Jensen Ackles. Yes.... I know it's a pipe dream. Until they actually cast someone other than him I'm going to enjoy my vacation in Shangri La. (Hmm... Jensen and Robert...)
If Marvel was doing a film about current 616-universe Steve Rogers than it would be Mark Valley or bust for me. Valley is Steve Rogers, the problem is I don't think he's right for the direction they are taking the origin story. The production would also have to work around his Human Target schedule. That would mean production would have to wrap by August; that is so not enough time if production starts in June. (And selfishly, I'm enjoying my weekly Steve Rogers, Rorschach, and Emerson Cod snark fest each week. I really want him to keep doing Human Target.)
Thus... I would love to see PATRICK WILSON

ALSO!
I'm concerned about Red Skull (Ralph Fiennes or Christoph Waltz PLZ & THX U!).
THE CASTING process for Marvel's Captain America movie is under way.
Los Angeles-based up-and-coming actor Anderson Davis, who expressed an interest in the role here on The Geek Files in June last year, tells me auditions are going on at present and that he hopes to try for the role over the next few days.
Davis (pictured), who's an ex-athlete and also a fitness model, says he believes the role should be filled by an unknown. In a later piece I ran here, he responded to comments he had received as a result of the first article.
Recently, actor and model Rick Malambri said he had tried for the part, while Chuck actor Ryan McPartlin says he'd like to wield the shield although his response suggested he hadn't screen-tested or been officially approached.
Comic Book Movie reported that Wade Harlan (pictured above) had auditioned and also that American actor Johnny Pacar (pictured below) tweeted with this message on January 18: "Just read for Captain America. What a role to get. If only."
The 28-year-old looks, to me, more like sidekick Bucky or perhaps Steve Rogers before he takes the supersoldier serum that transforms him into the physically-perfect hero.
Previously, Twilight's Kellan Lutz and Chuck star Zachary Levi have both said they are interested in playing the hero, along with Sam Worthington who turned up at an interview in a Captain America T-shirt to make his enthusiasm clear.
Meanwhile, 6ft 5ins actor/model Derek Theler (pictured below) tweeted on January 22: "Call me Steve Rogers" followed by "Captain America tomorrow!"
One Tree Hill actor Robert Buckley (pictured above) has said he wants the role, with Geekweek reporting the 28-year-old as saying: "Well, hands down I would be Captain America. Yeah, it's kind of a no contest right there.
"Having said that, there are so many great books out there, that I'm going to go ahead and just... if Captain America didn't work out, there are a bevy of good choices out there."
The First Avenger: Captain America, directed by Joe Johnston, is set for release on July 22, 2011. The character will then appear in The Avengers team-up movie in 2012.
Captain America is the alter-ego of Second World War soldier Steve Rogers, whose capabilities were enhanced to their peak by a supersoldier serum.
Hurled by an explosion into the North Atlantic ocean, he remained frozen in suspended animation until his body was found and revived by the Avengers decades later.
The character featured in a movie serial in 1944 and then a 1990 film starring Matt Salinger.

(And for this reason, I'm kind of glad Jon F isn't directing The Avengers. He said if he did, it would just be about Tony and the others, not about The Team.)

But I think with the right script and director, it won't be all about scenes with Tony showing off and being BAMF, so as long as the Cap actor is good, he should be able to shine on his own.

Tony's part in the Avengers will totally depend on who they consider as the main character. Will it be Steve, Tony, or Fury? Fury makes the most sense as a plot device. It's about Fury's attempt to put a team together? How will he do it? Yada yada, the story writes itself.
Steve makes sense, too, because his arc easy follows The Hero's Journey. RDJ stated that he's really into Vogler, and they are really using it on I2M -- and probably will use it on the Avengers, too.

I would hope they tried to NOT think of someone as a main character and make it actually about a team. I think, considering that plot, that Fury should probably get the most screen time and focus, though.
Steve will be easy because of that, and because it's really hard to mess up his modern origin (found him, thawed him, out, hey, it's Captain America!) and Tony will be easy because they just have to slide him in from his movies. It's the other characters they'll have to really think about, probably. Well, Banner could be easy or hard depending on what they decided to do with him....

I'm thinking about it from a pure screenwriting perspective. There is always a main character -- even if a huge cast and multiple. (For example, Wolverine is the main character of the X-Men movies.)
UNLESS they make a true Robert Altman/Christopher Guest-esque ensemble film. They could do this. I would actually *love* to see them break formula and try.
Another question -- how does the team come together? They would do the New Avengers route where OMGCRISIS and everyone shows up -- and then the drama is how do they continue working as a team. Or they could actually "put together" a team, a la The Ultimates, where you need to go to everyone and recruit them. Then they woudn't actually gel together as a team until the Second Culmination Crisis. I'm dying to know. I really want to see the script. LOL.

Fan of Tony though I am, there are totally legitimate grievances with the character's behaviour in the last few years even if you discount the more out-there tie-ins. I really don't blame anyone who's prejudiced against the character; it's quite rational.
