Cap's been cast!

Over the weekend news broke that Chris Evans had been offered the role of Captain America in Marvel's upcoming superhero film, The First Avenger: Captain America. At the time Evans was reportedly mixed on whether he'd take the role since he'd already played a superhero in the Fantastic Four movies. After much deliberation, though, Heat Vision now tells us that he's accepted the role.

Chances are Evans and Marvel weighed fan reaction after word originally hit, saw that everyone thought he'd made for a fine Captain, and moved forward on the deal, which, right now, hasn't been fully disclosed.

The article seems to think he is a good choice for the role. I seem to be one of the few who liked him as Johnny Storm and I'm definitely interested to see what direction the Cap movie script goes. What are people's thoughts here? Do you think he can hold up his own movie and stand up acting besides RDJ?

Hate it. Hate him.

I. Has he ever been in anything that doesn't suck?

Sunshine? But dude, he's no Cap.

I liked him as Johnny Storm too, but Johnny is a totally different character from Steve, so it's hard to tell what kind of Steve he'll make. I'm going to cross my fingers and wait and hope.

[identity profile] arileo.livejournal.com 2010-03-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...
I suppose we could give him a chance. It could have been much much worse.

Well, after some of the suggestions that have been floating about, he's not so terrible. He does do likeable well.

Could be worse.

[identity profile] tavella.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
He's at least a movie actor rather than a CW also-ran. I never saw FF, so don't have an opinion on him yet.

It's really a damn near uncastable part, unless you have Brad Pitt and a time machin.

[identity profile] jane-says.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm ... I liked him as Johnny Storm. He fit the part and tone of the Fantastic Four movies, which I barely tolerated. But I'm not a F4 comic fan-girl by any stretch of the imagination. The only reason I even went to the first one was "OMG! DOOOOOOOOMMMM!"

I don't think I've even seen him in anything else so I can't judge his actual acting ability.

To be completely honest I've been judging all the Cap potentials by looking at pics of them wedged between pics of RDJ and Chris Hemsworth to see if they "look right" ... if you know what I mean.

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! I've been looking at the hopefuls next to pictures of RDJ and Hemsworth! Nice to know I wasn't the only one.

On the whole though, I can live with it.

Okay, so it sounds like they want this Captain America movie to be a "coming of age" story (I assume that's while he's on the job becoming Cap, and not like.. back in his childhood). Based on that, I can see Evans making sense to the people making the movie. At least I know he can handle the type of role it sounds like they're making Steve Rogers into. (See "Sunshine", where he plays a pretty simple-but-not-simplistic, honorable, by the book Straight Man. Whoulda thought, turns out he can handle a dramatic role.) Add to that Chris Evans' particular, um, Chris Evans-ness, and I can see how this came together for the casting people.

So I think the thing is, Evans probably makes sense for the way they've reported that they're setting up Steve Rogers... it's just the way that they're setting up (coming-of-age) Rogers that I'm not quite feeling :\

Not to mention CROSSING THE STREAMS D: Especially with Marvel's thing for crossovers--which it looks like they'll be carrying on with in their movie-verses--that's just weird.

I am not enthused.

I liked him as Johnny and I liked him in Sunshine, but I just don't see him as Cap. I'm not even gonna start on the possibility for disaster if they ever want to get the FF together with the Avengers. That would be a clusterfuck.

I mean I like the guy as an actor, but can he really stand up beside RDJ and sell it? I guess all we can really do is cross our fingers and hope for the best. I'm also gonna be superficial and say that with him as Cap my Steve/Tony fangirl may just die a little on the inside...

[identity profile] savemoony.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
The F4 films with him were Fox productions. The Avengers movies are Marvel productions. Different studios and different universes. If Marvel Studios ever gets the rights back and reboots F4, it won't matter that he played Johnny Storm. They will recast Storm and everyone will forget the F4 existed (like I try to already).

[identity profile] melisus.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
He's a lot better than most of the other names that were floating around, I'll say that. And the more I look at him the more I think, "Yeah, it's possible."

But he was PERFECT as Johnny Storm and I was hoping they might keep him around if the franchise ever had a reboot. So much for that.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I am also not enthused. D: But... I suppose it's not a horrible choice, considering some of the other options. :\ RDJ was going to act circles around any of the boys they had up there anyway.

[identity profile] sunshineclouds.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Weeeell, I liked him in Sunshine so I don't think the choice is that bad and considering the other names, he was without a doubt the best option. And I can see him with RDJ for now (I don't know why but I do and I see I'm in the minority here) but I do need to see how is the chemistry/interaction for real because otherwise we're doomed.

Anyway, I was expecting so much worse tbh so this is practically good news. Here's hoping for the best.

[identity profile] lady-death.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Considering I just started reading vol. 1 Avengers and the Fantastic Four feature in the first issue this casting boggles my mind. Even if the Fantastic Four gets completely rebooted I don't know if I can get my brain to look at Chris Evans without thinking, "That's Johnny Storm!" I want to go to the movie and enjoy Captain America not have a horrible body sharing storyline playing through my head.

I hated the FF movies. But I thought Chris was ok as Johnny. But as Cap??? I always thought Damon would play a perfect Cap before the "Bourne" movies. Too bad he wouldn't take it because they are too "similar."

I will remain hopeful. Key word is hopeful. :-[

Yeah, I really wanted to see Damon do it too.
But I'm pretty sure we're the only ones.

Argh. Should have been Captain Awesome. I don't know if he will be able to hold it with RDJ... though what actor really could?

[identity profile] radio-clash.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
He was excellent in Sunshine, I loved him as Johnny Storm, and in general I've always been a big fan. I think he'll be a fine Steve Rogers/Captain America, and I do think he can hold his own against RDJ.

Push was not a great movie, but it wasn't completely horrible either, it wasn't Chris or Dakota's fault that the script and plot was crazy, but they made it worth watching IMO.

RDJ 5'8", Chris Evans 6ft. Chris Hemsworth 6'4", good range in the heights IMO. :D

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I totally check all their heights too!

[identity profile] chaosakita.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
He was in the Nanny Diaries!!!!!

I wonder how this will turn out. He really hasn't been in any good movies. At least he's hot.

Let's not complain until he actually does his role. I hope there will be a lot of porn coming out from this.

I don't mind it, I'm not gonna make any judgements until the movie comes out. I'm just excited for the movie to come out 8D

[identity profile] booster-blue.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
He's the lesser of the evils, I guess. I dunno. I <3 him too much as Johnny, though. I kept hoping they'd keep him on for the F4 reboot. Don't see that happening now. And that makes me sad.

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Just putting in my two cents. I'm not 100% sold. He's cute, he's buff, he's taller then RDJ and he's closer to 30 (I didn't like any of the younger hopefuls)

I think it really just depends on his acting skills. Since it took the people so long to cast him I'm thinking he's got some real talent.

AND ya know he's gunna have chemistry with RDJ 'cause RDJ has gay chemistry with everything- in fact I think he ships himself with everyone.

... I guess I'm more optimistic then I originally thought.

I don't know. I liked him as Johnny Storm, but I haven't seen him in anything else. I think I'd like to have faith in him.
I'm just concerned with how he'll work with RDJ-- Not that I can ever think of any guy that didn't work good with RDJ, now that I'm considering the possibility.
That, and his ability to play Steve . . . I suppose we'll see, right?
