THIS THOUGHT CROSSED MY MIND AS WELL. I comforted myself knowing there will be at least three Avengers movies (at least) so we don't need to worry about him killing Tony in Steve's arms just yet ;)
Huh. I do think Whedon excels at creating interesting teams. And his action tends to be high-stakes more because the viewer cares about the characters and less because the explosions are really, really huge. So yeah, that's promising for an Avengers story.
(Maybe, since we've heard almost nothing about Wasp and Giant Man, he can make them a lesbian couple? Maybe using the name Goliath or Yellowjacket.)
I'm not exactly fond of Whedon as the director of The Avengers. He turned Kitty into Buffy with X men so what's to say he won't do the same thing to Jan or Carol? Don't get me wrong, I love Firefly and Serenity and Angel and all that noise I just don't think he's an infallible god among men and he does make a lot of mistakes. Alien Resurrection anyone?
Right now there isn't even Carol and Jan. It's been confirmed: Stark, Cap, Fury, Hulk, and Thor. But he is rewriting the script so hopefully he *has the chance* to turn them into Buffy.
I think it's aggravating that we need Joss Whedon on script to actually get women into this movie and give it a hope in hades of passing a Bechdel test. It's coming out almost 50 years after the first appearence of the Avengers, and it hasn't even confirmed having a woman in the initial team lineup.
On the one hand: I CAN DIE HAPPY, FOR I HAVE LIVED ENOUGH.
On the other hand: Who will he murder just to fuck with us? It's got to be someone without a plausible/recent canon death, just for maximum Jesus Joss, why did you even tell me this story?! points, but it's also got to be someone without big franchise money on their shoulders. My money's on...actually that rules out everybody, so he'll probably just kill Steve.
Not sure how I feel about this, wasn't a big Buffy fan (Probably seen 9 episodes in total) but I liked Angel, and loved Firefly. It depends on which Whedon shows up on this I guess. As long as he doesn't get kill/angst happy with the re-write.
I still feel like weeping joyfully because there will be an Avengers film, and it will be awesome. They'll probably have to wet vac me off the floor of the theater on opening night.
On one hand Whedon will probably make it less of an XY-chromosome fest. (Not enough ladies! TOO MANY MANS!)
On the other hand, will he be good Whedon (funny and in character and heartfelt) or bad Whedon (all the characters sound the same and everything is a rape metaphor)? We can only watch and wait!
This kind of gives me hope. D: Hearing the Cap News was making me worry for the Avengers movie, but Joss is at least a good sign! At the very least, he won't make it a sausage fest (I'm looking at you, script that currently has NO WOMEN GRAWR), and he has a good track record. Not perfect mind (no one does save those who have not tried), but pretty good.
Since Cap is leading up the the Avengers, perhaps Joss will take Johnston in hand a bit. The two movies will have to slot together! This is important!
Jeez, his tenure on Runaways should be enough to have him banned from any Marvel title. Oh well, there will be quippable dialogue, and somehow he'll kill off a character for added angst.
