Captain America film WTF.

A character who spent most of his origin years fighting in the European Theatre is being filmed in ::gasp!:: Europe! Instead of in LA! He's not a real patriot anymore because he's not supporting the US economy!

...Really, Yahoo? Even if it is being done for the sake of film costs and not for authenticity, seriously, guys. Please let this be a gigantic dose of sarcasm, because dear God, it's just kind of sad and pathetic otherwise.

And for further WTF, this is on Yahoo's front page as well.

ETA: Better shot.

Am I the only one who finds it utterly hilarious that they used Ultimate Cap for the image? I mean, the only way it could have been funnier is if they'd used US Agent or the psycho Commie-Hating 50s Cap.

...

"Sure, some of the "Captain America" adaptation is literally set in London; for those scenes, that location makes perfect sense. But it also makes perfect sense for Captain America, once he's done fighting Nazis, to also show a little patriotism and film seems in his home country. But, as any American knows - including its Captain - money talks."

I'm not as well versed in Captain America than I am in Iron Man but... according to what I remember about the actual Film, Steve's not going to be in America that often, right? I mean, it's set in WWII with Steve transitioning from boy-next-door to Super Soldier.

Wouldn't it make sense for the majority of those scenes to take place with Europe as a backdrop? With actual battle scenes? Even if it's just a bunker and maybe a lab or something, it can be easily justified why it's being filmed in Europe and not US soil.

Frankly, I rather have them film in Europe for cheaper production cost if it means the end result turns out better than if it was filmed in the US.

I don't get the outrage tbh. Well, I kind of do but still. I mean, what they're doing is the most logical thing to do. If this is supposed to be happening during WWII and Cap is supposed to be fighting nazis you go to Europe to film all that stuff. Besides, if it helps to save budget for better effects or whatever, that's even better.

[identity profile] scatter-muse.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The outrage is being fabricated by the media and by people who don't read comics or heh... failed history. In other words, it's coming from idiots.

Who wrote this stupid article anyway? Let's go mock them.

[identity profile] sunshineclouds.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually seen a couple of comments made by "comic book fans" (yeah, right!) but yeah, it's mostly the media. Apparently, people in LA were disappointed because they were counting on this production to create a lot of jobs but it wasn't anything like a lot of articles (like this one) seem to be implying. I mean, honestly!

Hahaha, I've been doing that since yesterday ;D

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So, a movie that's set in Europe will be... filmed in Europe? OMG, how dare they! Don't they know that every location on Earth, from France to Korea, is supposed to look exactly like Southern California (except for the American Southwest, which looks like Italy), while every location on another planet looks exactly like either Canada or styrofoam rocks?

:O they're filming in London?

[identity profile] grey-bard.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Headdesk. Just... no end of headdesk.

Okay if you're crazy about this stuff I can *maybe* see being annoyed if the parts set in America were filmed elsewhere. But the parts set in Europe?

WTF.

Baww harder.

Saw that on twitter this morning and nearly rolled my eyes out of my head. Especially when they started going on about how Cap was "home grown" or some shit.

HELLO. TONY STARK ERSKINE BUILT HIM IN A CAVE LAB! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS SERUM! Nothing homegrown about that, kids.

[identity profile] jynx.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
...so. yeah.

i have no opinion on the american people in general. american people in general - the AVERAGE america - makes my brain bleed.

[identity profile] adrian-chan.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, I'm confused--you mean WWII DIDN'T happen in the U.S.? What nonsense are they spewing now?

Yeah, I heard about this earlier and was basically all, "What a load of B.S." But clearly it would be MUCH more American to fabricate location by filming European scenes in America. And not, say, Europe.

[identity profile] lilpocketninja.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
EVERYTHING IMPORTANT HAPPENED IN THE US don't listen to the European surrender-monkey lies!

[identity profile] adrian-chan.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! ...Everything important happened until you start implying that Germany INVADED the U.S. Or that the Holocaust happened here. And clearly those things DIDN'T happen during WWII because WWII happpened in the U.S.!

*shrug* When it comes to this kind of non-issue, any publicity is good publicity. The producers are probably happy this controversy has been manufactured stirred up

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I saw this too. And I'm just reiterating what everyone has already said but...I think WWII took place in Europe. I could be wrong (sarcasm)..There could've been a big battle in Wyoming. I gotta check my old text books. LOL.

So silly!

[identity profile] 13-lucky-charms.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I WAS ABOUT TO POST THIS BUT I WAS SO BUSY RAGING OVER IT. JUST FFFFF. Someone needs to brush up on their WWII history because I don't remember ANY battles taking place in the US (I'm not counting Pearl Harbor here)

I'm not so much angry over them saying Cap isn't patriotic (PFFFt *head desk* ) but more so over the lack of history knowledge. AGHHH

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there was one German U-Boat that made it all the way to the Chesapeake Bay before getting torpedoed, but somehow I don't think that counts.

[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm particularly filled with not!lulz at the bit where they point out Cap was fighting Hitler before Pearl Harbor...

Yeah, that's because the rest of the world (NZ, Australia, Canada etc as well as Europe) had been at war for two long, vicious, bloody years by then. Wouldn't have been a world for him to save if we hadn't.

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
What context were they discussing that in? Because the fact that the comic started coming out before America joined the war was actually a big deal back in 1941. Timely Comics apparently had protesters out in front of their office over the whole "punching Hitler" first issue, because it was pro-American involvement in the war at a point when a lot of Americans wanted nothing to do with it.

So you could actually bring the "fighting Hitler before Pearl Harbor" thing up in a way that had an actual point, if you're talking about it from a meta/Doylist perspective.

[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
But there is an added sense of loss - not counting the hundreds of Hollywood jobs that will disappear - because it is, you know, Captain America. This was a character that was created a full year before Pearl Harbor was even bombed by Japan. Cover art of early Captain America books showed the hero punching Adolph Hitler in the jaw as a way of showing America's support for its European allies.

I'm pretty sure Lend Lease etc meant more to America's European allies (and the rest of us fighting/on rationing) than a sock in the jaw from a fictional character.

I've always given Timely credit, actually, for just the point you make. It's hardly government propaganda though, or indicative of wider community support. It read to me like the writer was either a) confused about history/context, or b) trying to have his isolationist cake and patriotically eat it too.

If I used yahoo news I'd be boycotting them now. Not only cause they dissed Cap but b/c they obviously have no regard for making the setting of a film authentic...Fuckers!
