Cap_Ironman Weekly News, Week Ending 12 September 2010

As many of you know, there's been a lot of dissatisfaction with LiveJournal recently. Because we understand why some people are no longer comfortable using LJ, we've created a sister community over at Dreamwidth. You can find it at c-im.dreamwidth.org.

This does not mean that we are migrating over to DreamWidth. It does mean that those who are no longer on LJ can remain part of our community of Steve/Tony fans. We will be linking to posts on both communities in future newsletters, so those who don't have DreamWidths don't have to worry about missing any great fic or art. You can comment on DW posts with openID, so you don't have to be a member to leave feedback. If you want to join DW, you still need an invite code, but those are fairly easy to get. You can ask me, one of the other mods, or look through the posts here to get an invite code.

In other news, your mods have decided that the comment section in the weekly newsletters are now an open space for off-topic conversation. Want to randomly introduce yourself? Want to share a recipe? Want to link to a fic you wrote that isn't Steve/Tony? Feel free to do it here. Also, if there is anything on-topic that you don't feel like making a separate post for, you can do that here, too.

[livejournal.com profile] penumbren is looking for - or possibly was looking for - a beta for a 616/Iron Man Noir fic.

[livejournal.com profile] niki_chidon posted two pieces of fanart: Lazy Sunday and Cap's Scrapbook.

[livejournal.com profile] dazzledfirestar posted a fanfic titled With You.

[livejournal.com profile] muccamukk posted a hurt/comfort guide to first-aide.

Finally, if you're a new or recent member, hello and welcome! Our rules are here, and in the profile; this includes our warnings policy, so please read. If you're interested in the ship, you may want to read the Ship Manifesto, and consult the list of Slashy Moments. If you're planning to write for the comm, there are some tips on writing the pairing here, and the Avengers in general here; if you're having trouble finding a beta, or would like to offer your services as a beta, our beta list is here. If you're looking for the comm archive, it's Tales of Suspense, and it's automated - you can create an account and upload your fic. Our Dreamwidth sister community is here. If you have any questions, you can comment here or PM a mod, that's me, [livejournal.com profile] muccamukk, or [livejournal.com profile] valtyr.

Off-topic spam conversation you say? Hooboy. Well, here are two questions I've been wanting to ask.

1.) The header image of Tony and Steve unconscious. Where's that from?

2.) A week ago [livejournal.com profile] mozzarellaroses posted a great T/S vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d-tEq-Js18). I was wondering if anyone had any good vid recs?

Oh. And hello all.

That's from Red Zone

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Red Zone is an Avengers story arc (about six issues) that pretty much has this shadowy character spreading a virus (like Ebola) that kills people on the spot. Tony, Steve, Tchalla (Black Panther), Ms Marvel (then known as Warbird), Sam Wilson, She Hulk, The Scarlett Witch, Jack of Hearts and Scott Lang (that was the Avengers line up back then) battling the virus on all fronts. In the final issue, Steve gets unconscious (to say how will spoil) and Tony gives him CPR.

The issue was written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Oliver Copiel (iirc), and only came back into print earlier this year. So you can find it on Amazon at a discount, too. Bargain.

Re: That's from Red Zone

[identity profile] ewanspotter.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're talking about the image with the H/C post, yes?

That arc is one of the few I've been missing as I try to play catchup on (recent) canon. I've sort of spoiled myself with the slashy moments list for "that scene," but I must get on that.

[identity profile] ewanspotter.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Gracias! I'm behind on Ultimates; must catch up.

[personal profile] valtyr 2010-09-13 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Call my name and I appear; that is from New Ultimates 2, which is drawn by Cho and written by Loeb. You can see the whole page here. (The dialogue is shopped.)

[identity profile] ewanspotter.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahah! Thank you. I'm a biiiiit behind on anything the Ultimates (read Super-Human, Homeland Security, Gods and Monsters and Grand Theft America thus far).

So now you're telling me there are NEW Ultimates? Ouy. Comic canon, you hurt my brain.

Know of where I could get a good list of the order of which to buy?
valtyr: (Default)

[personal profile] valtyr 2010-09-14 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This looks about right. Although I found Ultimate Power, Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum to be pretty much a waste of my time. After Ultimatum, Millar started writing Ultimate Avengers - the first arc of that was okay, the second less good - and Loeb started writing New Ultimates, which is pretty much garbage but is drawn by Cho so I just look at the pictures.

I have somewhere around twenty Dreamwidth invite codes, if anyone would like them.

I've got one at the moment. *pokes mostly unused DW account*

[identity profile] ollee.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Can haz? Thanks.

[identity profile] cosmicbiscuit.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
After finally getting off my metaphorical ass, I'm within a thousand words of finishing off a fic I shelved...Christ, months ago. Is it weird that now I'm holding off finishing because my two favorite chew toys betas are without ye olde internet access for now?

[identity profile] cosmicbiscuit.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
A few days, I hope. One's having computer issues and the other's out of town.

[identity profile] aitakute.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hello! *waves to all*

Ok thought I'd just ask this here - am interested to start reading on the entire Civil War, but I have no idea where to start. Suggestions?
ext_18328: (Default)

Well, it goes a little something like this...

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
For Marvel, when it comes to special events, they tend to approach it three deep, in that you have:

The main thrust of the event itself: for Civil War, there is just the comics dedicated to the event itself. Those are easy enough to find, considering there's a glut of trades scattering around now. So you can just buy/ read the trade that has the civil war itself.

A spin off from the events itself: For the event of Civil War, there's Frontlines part one and two - you don't need to read those. It's basically about Ben Urich and his team covering the war and being 'on the ground' so to speak.

Tie in issues of specific titles related to the event: So you have Civil War: New Avengers, Civil War: Iron Man, Civil War: Spiderman, et al.

That's as simple as I can explain it to you.

Re: Well, it goes a little something like this...

[identity profile] aitakute.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha in all honesty, you've made it much easier for me. I've been seeing many titles flying around and it's quite confusing as to where to start. I'm a new fan to the Marvel universe, been reading the newer stuff (The Invincible Iron Man, Avengers Prime, random issues of Captain America, etc), but I think it's probably time for me to look into the older stuff, especially where 'the big damn drama' started, LOL.

Thank you for this! Really appreciate it :D

There is 40 years of canon there

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
With Marvel and the characters there are 40 years of canon there, along with character key moments. For instance, there is Tony Stark's Demon In The Bottle storyline with round one of his alcoholism (before round two when he goes to California and hits his problem with the bottle out for good). Or there's Steve Rogers and when he decides to renounce the mantle of Captain America and turn into nomad.

I think for this, Wikipedia and Marvel wiki can be very handy in terms getting an overview of the character's life and canon and then if you really like an arc, or if it sounds interesting, you can stick to that and write around it.

For instance, when I've written 616 fanfic (I'm mostly Ultimates fandom based), I tend to go, this story takes place during Vol X issues xxx-xxxx, because each arc has a different writer, and different writers have different approaches to the character's personalities, and I tend to base my fanfic around that (it's easier for me, anyway).

So yeah, I'd advise the following:

Read a wiki (Marvel wiki might be the best one, because they have the volume and issue numbers for the major storyline in the characters lives), then find an arc that interests you and read. If you approach it that way, it means that you have six issues of a story arc to grapple with, and you're pretty much sorted there.

Re: Well, it goes a little something like this...

[identity profile] ewanspotter.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm also just getting into Marvel canon, so I had to sort of make a list of what was what. In a lot of cases, just be aware that you'll be reading something, and then in the next tie-in the events of the last haven't happened yet, etc. It can get a bit confusing, but as long as you know the general time-line, you should be OK.

Also, what I found frustrating about CW was that the culminating event, Steven's death, wasn't in any of the stuff labeled Civil War, so the main book ends, then you cut to, say, Tony's Civil War tie-in and at the end Steve is already dead.

So my advice, based on what I read, would basically be:

Civil War
Captain America #25 (if you're just looking for the event itself)
Civil War: Captain America
Civil War: Iron Man
Anything other CW tie-in you're interested in. (I liked the New Avengers stuff.)
Fallen Son

If you're interested in Iron Man stuff, I made a list for myself to figure out what goes where of recent canon, most of which ties in with Civil War:

Extremis (issue #1-6)
Execute Program (7-12)
CIVIL WAR HAPPENS HERE
Civil War: Iron Man (13-14, Casualties of War, The Confession)
Director of SHIELD (15-18)
World War Hulk (19-20)
Haunted (21-28)
With Iron Hands (29-32)

ALL THE SKRULL STUFF (which I've yet to figure out the right reading order for)

Invincible Iron Man (Issue #1-19)
Invincible Iron Man: Stark Disassembled (#20-24)
Invincible Iron Man: Stark Resilient (#25-28)
ETC

muccamukk: Wanda walking away, surrounded by towering black trees, her red cloak bright. (Grey)

[personal profile] muccamukk 2010-09-13 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not telling you not to read CW, but it does come with a warning that the core even (the six issues actually called "Civil War") was written by a man who never especially cared about the main Marvel universe. He mostly writes his own stuff (he did Kick Ass for example). To be honest, a lot of the characterisation doesn't make a lot of sense.

Read it to know what's going on, I guess, but not for the characters. Also: we're all kind of past that now, story telling wise Marvel has moved on.

If you're looking for a character intro, go get the trades for Vol Three, and check out that Iron Man/Captain America trade that came out a few months back.

Boy you're going to get angry. I know I did.

(pops out of obscurity)

Y'all posted just after I went to bed. ;~; Why you hate me?

I have two DW invites and an AO3 invite to throw into the pool, should anyone care to take 'em.

(wanders back into the abyss)

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, interesting to note, taking my birthday out of my profile gave me an adult content warning, but didn't lock me out.

♥ It's fine. I was just hoping to hop on the DW Mirror with my first fic ASAP. I literally had a DW Post open and ready to hit it. *g*

Ahoy hoy!

[identity profile] truthiness-aura.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I have ten (10) invite codes for Dreamwidth. If anyone on here would like one, give me a holla.

[identity profile] deviouslint.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
OH THANK GOODNESS, I was afraid that if I totally migrated I would lose the comm! It was what kept me popping back over here! Hugs to mods!

I think I have... seven? DW codes should anyone need one.

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've got seven DW invite codes, if people want them and truthiness_aura and deviouslint run out.

Question for mods: Are we allowed to mirror DW cap_ironman fic posts on the original LJ comm and vice-versa?
valtyr: (Default)

[personal profile] valtyr 2010-09-14 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
We're running the spam policies separately for each comm, so one post every two days for each comm - so crossposting is fine, as is posting a different fic to each comm on the same day.

[identity profile] dieewigenacht.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm joining the DW party. I have around ten or something like that. If someone wants one, just send me a PM

I think I'm still looking for a beta, although I will admit that I am woefully behind on following up with this, as Real Life hit hard over the last week-plus and not in any sort of pleasant ways. :S

[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hi everyone! I need someone who has read the Sentient Armour stuff and can have a quick convo with me towards it appearing in my reversebang fic. Anyone???

OFF TOPIC.

[identity profile] tehsoupie.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been wanting to make a Slashy Moments list for some of my other fandoms, and I was wondering: besides the one for Cap_Ironman, are there any others in known existence? I'm just curious.

I know that [livejournal.com profile] boostle (the community for Blue Beetle/Booster Gold, from DCU) is working on one here.
