Discussion for Avengers Vol 3 Issue 3

This wraps up the first story arc of Avengers volume 3! Find scans here. At the end I included the letter page, which has fan reactions to the first issue, and Stan's Soapbox, which has some speculation about the Iron Man movie. From 1998.

Need to catch up?
Issue 1 part 1 scans are here and discussion is here.
Issue 1 part 2 scans are here and discussion is here.
Issue 2 scans are here and discussion is here.

So, the Avengers have entered a new era with an adventure that managed to incorporate nearly all of them. What were the highlights? Best lines? Things you would have liked to see? Things that disappointed you?

Any Yeoman America/Iron Knight plot bunnies?

The letter page prints two fan letters concerning the first issue. Do you like letter pages in your comic books? Do you prefer them to be included or dropped from trade collections? Have you ever written a letter to Marvel?

This is the last post for this read-along, so feel free to discuss anything that struck you while reading this story. And thanks for joining me in exploring one of my favorite Avengers adventures!

I gotta admit, I was highly amused by the opening scene where Morgan is having her epic hissy fit because Wanda is missing, and then Mordred busts in going, "Hey, you're late for your appointment with the ambassador." This pretty much confirms my impression from the previous issue about how Morgan really hasn't properly thought through her Evil Overlord ambitions. Mordred is kind of a ninny, but he does at least seem concerned with the daily business of ruling the world. Morgan doesn't really want to rule the world, she just wants to be able to go "Nyah-nyah, I rule the world!" while batting the Avengers around.

LOL at Clint actually getting everybody to dress up as monks to sneak into the castle. Sorry, Clint, but the Robin Hood stories aren't actually a how-to guide.

Loved the ending, with all the heroes rallying behind Wanda and giving her their strength, and Simon sacrificing himself, and Wanda helping him do it, because they're all Avengers and that's what Avengers do. It's exactly the sort of thing I love best about the Avengers mythos. I had hoped to see stories like that again when Marvel promised us the Heroic Age, but it never really happened, and now it looks as if the Heroic Age is over anyway. Sigh.

Anyhow, this whole story was great fun and I'm glad I got the chance to read and discuss it.

Heh, he certainly didn't cover himself in glory here. But I did enjoy him flailing around trying to get Morgan to be a responsible supervillain who keeps her appointments.

Yeah, if Doctor Doom ever gets his hands on that sword, we're all screwed. Or Magneto -- that would probably leave us with House of M on a permanent basis.

I think this is the first really Wanda-centric story I've read (not counting parts of House of M and Dissasembled), and she really did rock. Makes Bendis's later treatment of her all the more galling.

I love whoever wrote in to fanboy Jarvis and his tea!

Yeoman America is 'Captain of the Queen's Vengeance' and Iron Knight is one of the divisional commanders. (Which kind of leads one to ask why Steve finds it necessary to sneak in. You're running the joint, Steve. Knock already. Have him summoned to your office.) Anyway, Tony is a commander under Steve, so I imagine they would spend plenty of time together.

I like this story, it was simple enough but fun. On the other hand, it isn't half a case of a villain cocking it up royally. Morgan had to make multiple really stupid errors for them to have a chance. And lol at the basicness of the plan. Rush in, thump everyone. And it wasn't a very good plan either, it wouldn't have worked if Wanda hadn't randomly shown up.

<3 Wanda, though. So badass.

I'm amused by the fact that they actually lampshaded it at the end of the third issue by having Steve say that they just have to wait for Morgan to make a mistake, because of course she's bound to make one.

Her plan seemed to have worked for less than a day. That's pretty rubbish, got to admit.

Steve was hoping Clint would take a lot longer. In fact, I'm surprised Clint was so efficient and timely about wandering around the ladies' barracks. Perhaps Steve spent too long practising his piercing gaze on Tony's scantily clad sleeping form.

She was, and seemed to be okay running a small castle.

'Bltch' is an awesome sound effect.

I love that Jan sits on Steve's shoulder. That's totally the best part of her powers. Also, apologising for zapping Hank in the face, she's so adorable. I hadn't read much of Jan before this besides as a supporting character in fanfic. She's really starting to grow on me.

I really noticed the poses on the flying/jumping/flung people, they feel real to me.

What was it used for here?
When Morgan squishes the guard's head on page four. :D
