I've noticed the OOC in the movie fics. Which makes me a sad bunny. :(

[identity profile] nerdwegian.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I came to fandom via the movies, so movieverse sort of falls naturally as a preference for me, though I also enjoy 616! verse. I am not familiar enough with the comics to really enjoy anything beyond that (yet). XD

[identity profile] chariflame.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely prefer 616 fic. The movies are great, but the characters are slightly different and don't have as much... history? Tony especially, I find that his characterisation is very RDJ-influenced in the movies, he's mellowed out more in the comics and I prefer that.

Having said that, I do still love the movies, and I'll occassionally read the odd fic here and there. But the majority of the time, I will specifically hunt out comic fic. (We'll include Marvel Adventures in here too, since I find it's just a sappier version of 616. We all need fluff from time to time.)

[identity profile] kmyash.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This exactly. I tumblr rp Steve and all the Tony's I interact with are completely movieverse (which isn't bad, my favorite partner is a movieverse Tony) but sometimes I wish I could rp with a butler Jarvis instead of an AI, etc since my character used 90% comic history.

For rp I know but its the same idea for me and the fics.

hahah okay this is a week later but I just saw this poll now. I'm not a fan of RDJ so I don't really his Iron Man all that much. It's hard to find comic fic though! It's been a while since I've been in the fandom, but I remember that it seemed like there was only a handful of Steve/Tony fics a few years ago. This community certainly seems a lot bigger now. Now there are a lot more fics, but I think they're mostly movieverse...So I guess the film has been a mixed blessing lol

[identity profile] cookinguptales.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite is and always will be Marvel Adventures. I love that you can make things as cracky and fluffy as you want and it's all gloriously IC. It is impossible to be too weird or quirky or silly. I tend to ignore mass swathes of 616, the Ultimate line is not my bag at all, and I'm not a big one for movies fic. It's just not the characterization and setting that I fell in love with. I enjoy watching the movies and I do read the fic, but I don't enjoy it nearly as much as comics fandom. MA is really the only line that I can love without reserve.

I also have a deep and lasting weakness for Iron Man Noir fic. And AUs!

[identity profile] cookinguptales.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, yes. Jan and Hank are so much fun in MA. Jan is the best and I love how Hank isn't crazy. Oh no, did he create an evil robot that's going to destroy us all??? Nope! He's just missing.

Well, that fits under AUs, right?

[identity profile] cookinguptales.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Spidey isn't so much of a draw for me if just because he's in the Avengers in 616 quite a bit, too, but I loooove having Storm as co-captain. She's marvelous. I agree with the dates--I love the issue where Thor and Storm are secretly dating and they have to distract the All Daddy.

[identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yea I like these as well and EMH cartoon fics because of happy Jan and Hank. :)

[identity profile] el-gilliath.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There are so many brilliant Noir fics, jesus.

[identity profile] el-gilliath.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one of my favourite Noir fics!

Sadly I don't have many Noir links around anymore due to a hard drive crash, just these two besides the one you mentioned:
http://archiveofourown.org/works/161082
http://archiveofourown.org/works/128710 (this one is sort of a crossover with 616)

[identity profile] el-gilliath.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Most welcome! Sorry I can't supply you with more atm

[identity profile] cookinguptales.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And I love every last one of them. idk what it is about that AU that attracts ginormous, amazing fics.

I am considering writing an Iron Man Noir/Rocketeer crossover at some point, but it may be too much to live up to for me. lol

[identity profile] el-gilliath.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's the thought of all this faboo tech in a Noir setting. I know that's part of the reason I love it, for sure!

No common, you can't say that and not do it. PLEASE

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I love it all. Every version has its own ups and downs, which means there's a canon for every sort of relationship. 616 for the "long time besties with their ups and downs", MA for fluff, Ults for plotty angst, movies for compact punch without the massive backstory, EMH for teamfic.. I couldn't choose if you twisted my arm.

"Everything but Marvel Adventures" is a thing? Someone doesn't love MA? D:

I only really read movie-verse stuff - I don't (can't) read comics, so I don't know the history and the characters in those universes at all.

[identity profile] taiyou_to_tsuki.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually have to say everything but moviefics - and I still like the movieverse. I just find pretty much every other 'verse more compelling in some way, whether it's the long history of 616, fluff and crack in MA, the tension in Ultimates, etc etc... Also by now there's such an overwhelming amount of movieverse fic of varying quality, I don't have the time and energy to go through them all. XP

[identity profile] angel-inoshi.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
To choose a specific universe is hard since as tsukinofaerii said...each verse is different/special enough to do it's own thing, but still be overall familiar. I adore 616, 7207 (Ironman!Noir), EMHs, MA, Ironman Armored: Adventures, AUs, crossovers,1610, etc, etc. I do usually tend to lean more towards 616 just because there is still so much established history, and I didn't care too much for movie!verse at the beginning since a good chunk of what I found makes me cringe at the overall OOC-ness. However, I now have found some movie!verse fics that are freaking amazing. Plus movie!verse fics are getting better since the premier of the "Avengers" because, hey, fans have a little more to work with \0/ and are understanding the core of the characters.
But honestly, I think what determines my overall interest in what verse I currently dig is what is lengthy/new/available/updated most frequently...and what's canonically happening in each verse. For example, 616 is a mixed bag...while we do have an event going on (Avengers vs. Xmen)...there hasn't been anything to really get excited about, imo. Sure if you want woobie!Tony...considering what's happening in his solo...yeah...angst angst angst. But there is the challenge that Steve is currently dating Sharon Carter...and the way Brubaker is going I am seeing a chapel in the future. On the movie!verse you have the opening for a fresh start since things are just starting to roll, though Tony is with Pepper. I have no clue what's happening in Ultimates (1610) but this is why I generally like AUs...you can play however you want...be it mystic knights or werewolf clans to what-ifs.

Er...what was the question again? Ramble, ramble, TLTR: I <3 Steve/Tony from almost any universe as long as they aren't so OOC I cry in pain. Though...I'm not all that fond of self-insertion fics...sorry D: seen too many that scared me for life.

I'm still a bit sad that the movies didn't take advantage of all the possible identity porn and angst and went with Tony being Iron Man openly.

[identity profile] el-gilliath.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the fics in every universe. Makes it hard to keep the universal facts straight in my head every now and then, but thankfully a quick wiki search clears that right up, lol.

I have a soft spot for 616 and movies though.

[identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the comic Steve and Tony together. Movie fics with them together I have real trouble suspending disbelief, because movie!Pepper is so intrensic to movie!Tony's character. I haven't read something yet that deals with that well. Most just put them as broken up in a passing note or else there is a big angst fest about it falling to pieces terribly. Either way the character's ring so false that way. I especially hate the ones with demonized!Pepper.

I much prefer the comic fics. Also, in comic fics the author doesn't tend to fall into the trap of pairing everyone up together with someone else on the team. >.> Probably because the availability of more "canon" characters in the universe. Also, how to put it the 616 fics the two of them together seems more believable with the characters and the way they are written.

That being said, I have enjoyed reading many movie and 616 fusion fics. When people combine aspects of the two universes together to create their story they in general get around the issues I have with most movie fics and it can be really interesting how they blend the two.

[identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
I know it was trauma inducing I immediately stopped reading. :(

[identity profile] secretpianist.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The only verses I'm currently familiar with are the movies and 616. I like both, for different reasons. I find it's not the container that counts; it's what you put in it: I have found spectacular fics in both verses :D

[identity profile] ladyknightanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never read the comics (but I kind of want to now?) so I picked Movie 'verse, but I have read fanfic from the other universes, too, and so long as they don't delve into a complicated plot-point someone who hasn't read the comics wouldn't know, the characters are essentially similar enough that I really enjoy it. I forget which 'verse it was that no one knew Tony was Iron Man and though Iron Man was, instead, his bodyguard, but I read an amazing fic where Steve had to deal with the repercussions of loving Iron Man and Tony both, till he figured out they were the same person. It was great. :D

[identity profile] osiris-ghost.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not fussy, I'll read any verse really. Though I suppose I generally prefer 616 for Tony characterisation and only really read Ultimate or MA verse if I’m in the mood for it. It’s one of the things I like about this fandom actually, there are so many different playgrounds for authors to choose from that you get some wildly different stuff - I like that you can be reading a fic where Steve and Tony have been best buddies for a long time and then the next fic you read and they’ve only just met. Variety’s the spice and whatnot.

I said "everything but Ultimates", but having said that, I LOVE Ultimates AUs (like The General's Fury for example). I think each universe has its pros and cons; I really liked reading 616 at first but now I'm less keen, but I don't know why that is - maybe I just reached saturation point. I love MA fic and I generally love Movieverse fic. Haven't read much EMH stuff but definitely not opposed to the idea. I'd have to say that AUs are probably my absolute favourite, though.

[identity profile] dragonsheart21.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I am slowly working my way through the comics its all Marvel Noir's fault I wanted to read an Iron Man Noir based fic and realized I couldn't do it without reading the comics first. The movies brought me in but I'm never satisfied until I am fully immersed.

[identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
I will admit I like a lot of the Noir fics. So, it makes me want to read the Noir comics myself.

Everything but Ultimates for me! Sometimes I'll read Ults fic, but usually the verse is too grimdarkserious for my tastes - I like my comics characters cracky with a light touch. Of course, a good author can make me believe in almost anything.

(Where did the "superhusbands" label come from?)

I love them all. As many others have said, each has ups and downs, different characterizations, different situations. I like that Tony wasn't horribly abused by Howard in movie canon, I love the BFF relationship in 616, the angst of Tony in Ultimates, and AEMH is just too adorable and I love Tony as team leader. Probably, though, I like the fics that take a little of everything most. Having been interested in the movies before comics, I find I don't mind that mashing up.

[identity profile] taricalmcacil.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
For me it totally depends on my mood. If I want something with really detailed history and plot and background that's really built up, I want 616. When I want good plot, but versions of the characters I'm more familiar with, I prefer movieverse (I've skipped around a lot in the comics, and I'm not up to date on them). I think my top 3 favorite fics/series are 616 based though.
