Original Sin: what is it and why do we care?

Original Sin is the Marvel comics event beginning in May.  It's being described as CSI: Spandex meets Marvel's Civil War meets SHIELD's public exposure in the MCU (imagine a pair of cosmic VCR eyeballs instead of a file blasted online).

Not joking about the eyeballs.

The second rule of Marvel comic events is: Even the most decent superheroes turn into superassholes when convenient for the plot.  (The first rule of course is that superheroes punching each other sells more comics than superheroes working together to punch supervillains.)  Original Sin is not going to be an easy story to dive into without some background info, since its intent is to unearth the ugly little secrets our favorite heroes have been hiding in their closets.

5 Things You Need to Know to Read Marvel's Original Sin

But what does all this have to do with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in particular?  I'm glad you asked.

If the words Illuminati and mindwipe don't make you cringe, here's a summary of the whole sordid mess.  Original Sin promises to break the hidden issues between Steve and Tony wide open and presumably put them at each other's throats.  (Only one will be left standing at the end, yet again, etc.)

It looks like the book we'll really, really want is Avengers #29.  (Beware spoilers, feels, and lots of shirtless Steve.)

Sigh.

This all has me feeling very conflicted. On the one hand, I do think that the whole mindwipe issue really needs to be addressed. On the other hand, I really, really don't want to deal with another huge Marvel event where Steve and Tony are at each other's throats. Civil War was one too many, as far as I'm concerned.

On the third hand, there will probably be lots of emotionally fraught interactions and fanfic fodder. On the fourth hand, I've kind of sworn off Marvel's big crossover events because they keep sucking.

Too many hands! I'm turning into an octopus trying to deal with my feelings about this event!

Honestly, I'm more worried about Tony's characterization than Steve's. Especially with the way the promotional materials keep referencing back to CW. Marvel has a history lately of giving Tony what should be a perfectly reasonably position and then villainizing him over it. I hope they don't do it again.

Ugh. Sounds like a straight up must miss.

-makes a distressed angry groaning noise from deep in her throat, makes an aborted "but why" gesture-

That's it. At this point, I'm about ready to just give up.

Is this building on what Tony found out about his birth or completely separate?

Ha. Been back for a couple of weeks in the Marvel universe after nearly two years of absence) thinking that Avengers got back to fighting villains instead of each others and wondering if the new Avengers and New Avengers would be filled with friendship and Steve and Tony saving each others... I was wrong. I really hope they'll solve this one with words and discussion tho.
