2019 Rec Week: Cap-IM Sunday!

This community is dear to a lot of people, not least of all because of the event-packed schedule which generates fantastic creation and collaboration opportunities throughout the year. Wonderful fanworks have been created over the years and it is time to celebrate all the lovely creators that help make our events possible. We're finishing our rec week with Cap-IM Sunday, so rec any and all fanworks produced for a cap_ironman event, both old and new!

Note: Please mark major warnings for your recs, and if you have time, let us know why you’re reccing a work.

2019 Rec Week Themes and Schedule

All New Monday, July 15th: Works posted any time after the end of the 2018 Reverse Big Bang (mid-June).
Artful Tuesday, July 16th: A rec day highlighting fanart specifically! Come and rec all the art.
Angsty Wednesday, July 17th: Bring on all the angst!
Fluffy Thursday, July 18th: Rec your favorite warm fluff works.
Fix-It Friday, July 19th: All fix-its, all day.
Kiss-It-Better Saturday, July 20th: Hurt/Comfort of any kind.
Cap-IM Sunday, July 21st: Rec all your favorite works created for one of the Cap-Iron Man challenges!

There are several different ways to participate:

• Comment with your recs on the themed daily posts that will go up on our Dreamwidth and Livejournal communities. (Anon commenting allows everyone to participate, even if they don’t have an account.)


• Reply to each rec day's Tumblr post that will go up on our Cap-Iron Man Tumblr with your recs.


• Make a Tumblr post with your recommendations, @ the cap-ironman Tumblr and tag it with #capimrecweek within the first five tags on the post. Please include the day’s theme somewhere in the body of the post. On the dedicated day we will reblog posts for the day’s theme on our community Tumblr and later include them in 2019 Rec Week masterlist.

*coughs* There's a mixed bag of angst and h/c and fix-its and some fluff! These are, apart from the nostalgic Genghis Khan attack I had earlier this year, all works from May 2018 to now. There are so many delightful works created for cap-im events, I'm sure I'm missing some of what I wanted to rec, but I'm already late so:

to dream of the stars by Gottalovev (MCU AU, 32K)
Summary: Fifteen years after a summer romance at Space Academy that left them brokenhearted, Steve and Tony meet again as astronaut candidates.
Comments: 2017 Cap-IM RBB work, with gorgeous art by Wolviecat. SPACE!! Space academy and misunderstandings and did I mention space?!

By Guidance of the Stars by GuardianMira (AU, 28K)
Summary: Steve is a space outlaw and Tony is a blue-skinned alien prince who stows away on his ship. According to Steve’s Mark, they’re soulmates. Too bad Steve doesn’t know Tony’s full name and Tony doesn’t know soulmates are a thing for humans. Maybe they’ll work it out once people stop shooting at them.
Comments: 2018 Cap-IM BB work, with beautiful art by PannaNat. Space soulmates! One sided soulmates! MORE SPACE! (also some really lovely team dynamics and worldbuilding)

The Return of Tony Stark: A New Marvels Adventure by Navaan (Noir, 37K)
Summary: Tony Stark follows a lead from a mysterious notebook. It's the beginning of a strange Odyssey. In 2019 Steve Rogers is Captain America and also a great fan of Marvels. At a special anniversary exhibition he stumbles over a strange artifact and can't help but wonder. Little does he know, that it's a sign of things to come.
Comments: 2019 Cap-IM RBB work, with stunning art by jayjayverse. Identity porn, Noir adventures, and the original Avengers in a new configuration – what’s not to love (I adored the delicious trope reversal going on)!

Nobody Else But Me by Amonae (AU, 20K)
Summary: Iron Man and the Captain have been side-stepping each other at every turn, a villain and spy locked in a constant samba. But SHIELD is growing impatient, and Iron Man is losing face in the eyes of his men--both Steve and Tony find themselves in too deep before even realizing the stakes.
A spy AU based on the music video "Genghis Khan" by Miike Snow. Done for the 2016 Cap-IM RBB.
Comment: 2016 Cap-IM RBB work, with delicious art by Natowe (you can find it embedded in the fic, as the Tumblr link is broken). If you suddenly remember the existence of “Genghis Khan” every in a while and feel bereft of fic, this is the one you want to re-read!

This boy, half-destroyed by haemodye (The Avengers, 7.9K)
Summary: It was legal, now, and it wasn’t even that controversial. Steve didn’t know what he was waiting for. It wasn’t like Tony would have stopped him, if he wanted to come out. He was sure Tony would love the chance to brag about him.
A date raffle, a closeted Avenger, and a gold ring all find themselves at the Stark Industries Annual Holiday Party.
What could possibly go wrong?
Comment:There’s a great jocular, confidential tone to this fic, and the cameos of JARVIS and Pepper really shine. It evokes a lot of great feels and is super sweet and bantery; a great proposal fic if you’re looking for some fluff!

Under Arizona Skies by Muccamukk (616/1872, 15K)
Summary: A recently unfrozen Steve Rogers becomes a man out of time once more as he accidentally crosses universes and finds himself in 1872… where a different Tony Stark seems very conflicted about his presence!
Comment: A most excellent 1872 fix-it, if I do say so myself (I was the lucky RBB partner for this fic)! The unfurling of the story is at the perfect pace, and it’s full of details that ground it in the canon eras chosen and has some lovely h/c.

The Difference It Makes (the erase/rewind remix) by cptxrogers (616, 1.2K)
Summary: Steve feels like there's something important missing from his life, but he has no idea what it could be.
Comment: This is such a tragic fic, and its tragedy is heartbreaking because of its brilliantly written dramatic irony. If you’d like to feel devastated, go forth and enjoy! Then, if you’d like some more aching angst, read the next fic in the relay chain, Cascade Failure (The Magical Meddling Remix) by runningondreams (3490, 1.9K)

Man with Your Frame by Veldeia (MCU AU, 71K)
Summary: Steve Rogers spends his days as a body-swapping agent for SHIELD and many of his nights exploring the various bodies in the bedroom with young tech genius and business heir Tony Stark—until one fateful mission changes everything. When Steve wakes up decades later, all his friends are gone, except for a much changed Tony. He recruits Steve to investigate a series of attempts on his life, but Steve soon realizes that finding out who wants to kill Tony may not be the most important mystery.
Comment: This fic is such a brilliant reimagining of Stevetony in the Altered Carbon universe, and bonus – you can read it not knowing anything about it, like I did when betaing the fic! For a melange of mystery, cyberpunk, romance and case fic, please look no further – it has a great twist, too.

Reject Your Reality (and Substitute My Own) by by dapperanachronism and Robin_tCJ (MCU AU, 75K)
Summary: Single parent Tony Stark’s son is the most important thing in the world to him – the ONLY important thing in the universe. A hipster Brooklyn coffee-shop owner & veteran doesn’t even rank on the list – even if he is hot and funny and kind.

When he hears about the possibly-high-traffic-and-therefore-dangerous coffee shop moving in next door to Casey’s preschool, he does the only sensible thing he can think of – he confronts the owner and tries to convince him to open his shop elsewhere.

Of course, Steve Rogers is stubborn as hell, and it turns out he can make a mean cup of coffee.

It sounds like an ordinary kid-fic coffee shop AU, but look a little closer and nothing is quite what it seems.
Comment: This 2018 BB is accompanied by some absolutely delightful artart by Cachette – everything looks so bright and cheerful and it really suits the fic wonderfully, enhancing the twist. The fic is a gorgeous pile-up of tropes, and it has an extremely well executed and enjoyable twist. Even if you don’t usually go for kidfics, try this one!

Summary: When Tony’s young, he thinks maybe he’s built wrong. He thinks: Maybe one day, if he gets good enough, he’ll be able to redesign Tony Stark. Cast himself in a new mold. One day, he’ll be better.
Comment:Earlier this week I recced isozyme’s the girl with the modern face. This is the 616 remix. It is very deliberately queer, and has that same rawness and it reaches you right there and twists. I have no words. Except that you should read this (angsty identity porn with lots of painful identity bits and a beautiful ending!). Also the comments have some thoughtful commentary.

forget-me-not by somalester (MCU, 1.7K)
Summary: For the prompt: "Steve retires. Tony visits him." / Or, years after Civil War and Thanos, Tony and Steve have a much needed talk.
Comment: Uh, so, I have archive warnings hidden as a default and this. Wow did this one break my heart at the reveal. It is excellently sad and beautifully written.

Count to Ten by Ironlawyer (Ults, 1K)
Summary: Tony gets what he wants, but not what he wants
Comment: This is gut-wrenching and beautifully written. The short segments build on each other and each packs such a punch, and every time “Tony is used to getting what he wants” is repeated, it causes fresh pain. There’s also a really fantastic comment that sums up the reading process for this fic in a stunning way, by demigodscum.

Love Calls You By Your Name by laireshi (616, 2.2K)
Summary: Steve's boyfriend, Tony Stark, doesn't come home after Iron Man gets hurt when protecting Steve.
Comment: A lovely little secret identity reveal fic, complete with angst, injuries, and a happy ending.

This Simple Feeling by inukagome15 (MCU, 17K)
Summary: When are two good friends not good friends? Sounds like the setup for a brilliant joke, right? Except when the joke mirrors real life. Tony and Steve are just very good friends. So why is it everyone thinks they're dating?
Comment:A bit of mutual pining, and some well-written tropey goodness – with a bonus of Rhodey and Tony’s close friendship and some 2012 Avenger family vibes.

Summary: Steve thinks that maybe Tony is trying to tell him something with all these security measures.

Comment: A hilarious and playful depiction of oblivious Steve and increasingly ridiculously obvious Tony, with a delightful ending!

If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home Now by vorkosigan (MCU AU, 13K)
Summary: "Hold that thought," Tony said into his phone. "I apparently just got hit by a hitchhiker."
"You hit a hitchhiker?" Happy sounded horrified.
"What? Am I talking to a wall? I got hit by a hitchhiker."
Having just broken up with Pepper, Tony is driving to California on Christmas Eve. When he picks up a hitchhiker, he hardly expects him to be the former Captain America, defrosted and on the run from SHIELD.
Comment: A hilariously set up fic which explores an interesting alternate take on how Tony and Steve could have met. The characterisation is amazing, and the immediate connection between them and all the things guessed at and misunderstood is really well done.

Good Morning Beloved by zappedbysnow (art, 616)
Summary: Tony is off to train the youngsters after breakfast.
Comments: A delightfully grumpy Steve and some adorable young Avengers! The subtle role reversal in terms of coffee dependency is cute.
