2020 Rec Week: What-If Wednesday!

We all love Steve and Tony, whether in happiness or tragedy, whether they're in high school or old men sitting on a porch, riding dinosaurs or flying through space. Canon arcs or movie endings can leave us feeling bereft and determined to create a "fix-it", or inspired to expand on what happened behind the scenes. Fanworks can range from canon divergent to being set in completely alternate universes! On What-If Wednesday, we'd like to know which non-canon-compliant fanworks you love — your favourite AUs, the perfect moment for canon divergence in your opinion — we welcome recs for fics, artwork, podfics, vids, manips, edits and more!

All New Monday, June 15th: Recently posted works that feel like they were created in 2012.
Tropey Tuesday, June 16th: "Team movie nights!" Come and rec works that have your favourite tropes.
What-If Wednesday, June 17th: Time to rec some AUs! Canon divergence, no-power alternate universes, soulmates… send them all in!
Tell-All Thursday, June 18th: Tell us about your highlights of 2012 or your favourite moments of canon, and share why you love Steve/Tony! Explainers welcome.
First Five Friday, June 19th: Share your firsts with us! The first 5 fanworks that made you fall in love with Steve/Tony, the first 5 people you subscribed to, the first 5 works that you created, the first 5 collabs you did with others, the first 5 anything!
Not-Fic Saturday, June 20th: A rec day highlighting fanworks like moodboards, manips, fanvids, podfics and artworks!
Cap-IM Sunday, June 21st: Rec all your favorite works created for a cap-ironman challenge!

There are several different ways to participate:

• Comment with your recs on the themed daily posts that will go up on our Dreamwidth and Livejournal communities. (Anon commenting allows everyone to participate, even if they don’t have an account.)


• Reply to a day's Tumblr post that will go up on our Cap-Iron Man Tumblr with your recs.


• Make a Tumblr post with your recommendations, mention the @cap-ironman Tumblr and tag it with #capimrecweek within the first five tags on the post (you can DM or email us the link as well). Please include the day’s theme somewhere in the body of the post. On the dedicated day we will reblog posts for the day’s theme on our community Tumblr and later include them in 2020 Rec Week masterlist.

Feathered Marvels Series by Veldeia (Noir/Dinotopia Fusion, 11.815 + 33.535 words)
Summary Part 1: In the final year of the war, Captain America disappears on a mission, but instead of the ice, he ends up carried by dolphins to an island of living dinosaurs. As it happens, that's exactly where the adventuring inventor Tony Stark crash-landed on his airship when he went missing seven years earlier.
Summary Part 2: After the plane Bucky and Cap were trying to stop explodes and crashes in the sea, Bucky wakes up on an island ruled by dinosaurs who have enslaved the human inhabitants. His rescuers are among the brave few who still resist, and send him to capture one of the worst lackeys of the beasts: Tony Stark.
Tony and Steve are enjoying their life together among the peacefully coexisting humans and dinosaurs of Dinotopia. When Tony is captured by the evil Northerners, Steve has to race across the island to save him. He's already lost Bucky—he can't lose Tony, too!

Comment: Well, given the banner on this post, I have to rec this Dinosaur AU first! Steve and Tony aren't dinosaurs themselves, but they crash-land in Dinotopia, which makes for a really unique and fun AU with lots of different sentient dinosaurs. (I hadn't heard of Dinotopia before reading this, but it's perfectly understandable without knowing that canon.) I particularly like it as an AU for Noir, with great characterization for Tony and Steve.

Summary: Sometimes, a voice whispers: you will never atone for your mistakes.
Tony believes that, believes it so strongly some days he drowns in it, but he still tries. Tries through Starfleet, tries through inventions, tries through missions. Then, one day, he meets his new Captain, and things change.

Comment: Star-Trek AU with a half-Vulcan Tony who, unlike Spock, decides to favor his human side. Great combination of character study, plot, and relationship development.


For You, Sir, Always (The Fairy Godfather Remix) by Veldeia (MCU/Canon-divergent from IM2, 9.402 words)
Summary: Unable to find a replacement for the toxic palladium core of his arc reactor, Sir has gone into cryostasis to wait for a day when science has advanced enough to provide a solution. While he is indisposed, it is my all-important task to decide when that time has arrived, and to select the person who shall bring him back to life.

Comment: Great worldbuilding, wonderful and affecting Jarvis POV, lovely Tony characterization from sadness over badassery to humour, and great Tony/Steve first meeting.

Summary: Art for Cap-IM Tiny Reverse Bang 2018

Comment: Gorgeous artwork with lots of great details - the night/day contrast, the colours, Steve's expressions, the sketches on the wall, the iconic comic panels - which invites the observer to fill in the details of the AU: glimpses of a parallel universe? Of the future? Steve as a comic book artist? Trapped in a cosmic cube with only distant memories? World-changing event? All possible.

Modern AU: Wildfire by Weethreequarter

Summary: When his friends sign him up for a dating app, Tony promises Pepper that he won’t even open it. A promise he fully intends to keep, until curiosity gets the better of him.

Comment: Takes place two years after the Battle of New York. Tony is still Iron Man, but Steve isn’t Captain America (Bucky is and he is awesome). So much Steve and Tony goodness as they “meet” online and take it from there.
