See... ok... first off PHEW I'm glad that's what it turned out to be glad you posted it! I also forgot it was (allegedly) coming out so soon...
Second, as long as it is just a WHAT IF then hells YEAH I'm glad. Don't get me wrong Tony is my favorite--hands down, cute little robo-toes down, etc--but I'd like someone ELSE to be sad about HIM for once. My dream for this is a total angst fest in which Cap and hopefully others are sad. What would be the awesomest thing ever? If Cap makes a little speech. Like the Confession. I doubt that will happen. But that would be awesome.
This is also what I would do with my My Little Ponies when I was a kid. Actually I think it was the plot of an MLP movie. Grr we all hate her! Oh no she's dead/missing. WE ARE SO SAD WE DID NOT APPRECIATE HER AND NOW FEEL HORRIBLY GUILT-RIDDEN!
It's the classic "you'll all feel sorry when I'm gone!" thing. I am a sucker for it.
You may have a point there. But knowing a certain community on LJ, people will just go, "YAY HE'S DEAD THE WICKED WITCH IS DEAD" instead of missing him. Tony's been too demonized in 616 for this guilt thing to work effectively.
That's why I want the writers to stop raping his character and make him a HERO again before they retcon Extremis or some other bunghole retard idea.
That is true. I was hoping that the skrull business would let him be a hero again. Or rather, appreciated as such. Silly me. To be fair, I might be behind one issue.
I've given up on people who hate him, they will never get it. I do care (because I am lame) about how people in the comic books feel about him and that is so frustrating. I have sad little hopes for the Spider-Man n' Iron Man issue of Invincible Iron Man coming up soon. If it's just Peter saying "you suck" over and over again I'm going to go crazy.
I guess after SI, they'll probably drive Tony to the ground and he'll have to rebuild again (his sense of self, his reputation, his business, etc), then for him to be eventually integrated into superheroing again.
It's sad when Ultimate Ironman Tony seems to be having a better time than 616 IM. I'm actually liking Ulitimate IM - and I hate that line, because most of the characters there are well... quite obnoxious.
I hate that it seems we may have to put up with a phoenix maneuver before people like him again. But even if Marvel runs me through the ringers (and Tony), at least he'll rise from the ashes.
I have a yen to sit down and write a letter, citing my dissatisfaction with the direction of Stark's character, but from what I've gathered, Fraction has already planned out 14 months of story... I only hope that Obama's presidency is a bit lighter (a Brit, me), so that the public Zeitgeist changes, so that the Marvel Universe on a whole can be lighter again. Bush will be gone soon, yo.
As it is now, I'm still collecting 616 IM, but I'm also reading Ultimates Tony Stark, and I do enjoy him - although I find Ultimate Captain America to be quite a sanctimonious twit. Like, if Ultimate Stark/Rogers ever had sex, it would be glorious hate sex, and uptightness on Steve's part.
To be fair, Ironman 7 was okay, they seem to be moving Stark into a sympathetic character now. They'll get there... I hope. Don't let me go over to The Ultimates line, Marvel, because that is crack! fic.
Cap in THIS (616) universe can be quite self-righteous too. (COUGH CIVIL WAR COUGH)
I haven't read much Ultimate!Tony. I read the first two Ultimate IM volumes, but stopped there. I've been thinking of delving in though, despite the less-than-stellar reviews
Erm... I'd recommend The Ultimates over Ultimate Iron man
Tony Stark in The Ultimates is strangely, a better character than in UIM.
In The Ultimates you get to see Stark's personality a bit more (even though he looks older, and not as handsome, because he's an alcoholic deep into his cups).
Stark's still generous to a fault, and is really fun and bordering on this side of shallow (for instance, when he finds out that someone close to him wants to kill him, he dispenses with her ruthlessly, cries one day, and then goes off p*ssy hunting in the next issue).
In UIM, Tony Stark gets on with Thor pretty well, even though Thor is anti co-operation and Tony is like, the third richest man in America. Steve is hung up on Wasp (but she's on the outs with him because his man out of time thing really gets old with her, really quick), but she's hung up on her ex (who Steve beat up). Steve is still hung up on Jan, and Tony, being Tony helps Steve when he can, although he recognises the futility of Steve's actions.
I've toyed with the idea of writing Tony and Steve from The Ultimate verse, but it would be a different dynamic, although there are certain similarities. Tony is definitely a man of his time, whereas Steve is not. Tony is also prone to great gifts of generosity (like, in The Ultimates, he gives Steve the old helmet that the latter lost in WWII), and filled with bonhomie and fun.
The difference with Tony and Steve in The Ultimates verse, is that they tend not to share much page time, or if they do, it's some sort of ribbing. Steve is the good solider, while Stark is doing this superhero gig for his own reasons, and they don't really seem to share much. As said before though, Tony does help Steve with his woman problem, and Tony still opens his mansion to the Ultimate Avengers, so there's room for the Tony and Steve link to grow.
Cap in THIS (616) universe can be quite self-righteous too. (COUGH CIVIL WAR COUGH)
Trust me, Cap in The Ultimates makes Marvel 616 Steve look like a mellowed out, pot smoking trustafarian. For real.
Tony has no shame, although I was surprised at who released it.
I'd recommend The Ultimate Avengers cartoon as well if you're into that sort of thing (I am). It's Captain America centric (and Cap is still self righteous, if you're wondering), and Tony is Tony (with a voice to drop one's panties for). Part one is here : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aDEYZC3-lKI
They even have the Ultimate Avengers novelizations (it seems that it's a really popular comic), and the novels are sweet, sweet, sweet, extended crackfic . If I were to write fanfic of Tony/Steve, it would be UM, Tony/Steve. At least both characters are alive. For now.
I must admit, I didn't like the Stark/Romanov hookup at all. I'm not really a fan of Black Widow in any universe at any time, with anyone (I remember her from my Daredevil reading days in the 80s). I was reading the comic off and on, but it was the Pietro/Wanda Flowers in the Attic or not vibe that kept me coming back. Then Loeb got his hands on the title - and revelations happened.
If you go get into The Ultimates, plz to be writing Tony/Steve fic, or at least get back to me how you read the relationship. As it stands right now, I'd have to hand wave like a magician to get my slash goggles on.
Give me time.
Oh, Jarvis is also a bitter old queen in The Ultimates
I need a scanner, I really do. If I had one, I'd just scan The Ultimates episodes. scans_daily has some good excerpts from The Ultimates. So far, there's only like, 4 trades (a fifth one for Ultimates 3 should be on the way) and the Ultimates Annual.
In the Annual Tony is hooking up Steve with some tech, so that he can be near to Jan (this is before Magneto comes to destroy The Ultimate universe in 3 days).
Tony hooks Steve up, here
and here
See what I mean? Tony and Steve get on. They aren't buds (because Steve is still trying to sort his head out, and he's still hung up on well... Jan). See how generous Tony is? A real stand up guy.
Like, he's been on a binge since 17, because of his make up . His mum got into an accident when he was in utero, so his skin is like, one big brain. When he drinks, he isn't in pain, and Tony is just constantly moving. I also think it depends on the artist. Joe Madueria (his scans aren't on here, sorry) tends to draw people cute, so Tony tends to look cute. But yeah, Tony looks a tad older here, although his body doesn't have the alcohol bloat.
You do see Tony. You really do. But see what I mean? He isn't as hot as he is in the 616 verse, and drinks a lot because if he doesn't he's in constant pain, hence the constant drink in his hand.
Old bitter, bitchy queen Jarvis. Jarvis steals petty cash and takes holidays in Morocco so he can get new twinks. He also has a monster crush on Thor.
Tony is a real pussy hound. Like, really. He comes across as flirtatious, likes his women, sometimes, you get the feeling that he isn't satisfied with it all.
Tony also has merchandising rights to The Ultimates. He's mercenary to the bone, our Tony.
I can't tell you any more, because you might be spoiled. For me, I don't mind being spoiled, because if the story is good enough, you'll always be caught off guard.
So, go, and buy the Ultimates and write me fic. I will say that The Ultimates is some serious Marvel sanctioned crackfic, it's so OTT, you can't take half the characters seriously, especially Hulk.
HTH!
Scans daily has some stuff here: http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/tag/ultimates
In the novelizations (Lord, the more I write about The Ultimates, the more disgusted with myself I feel. I have monster issues with the writing, but I keep on reading). Yes, Tony's always in constant pain. When he first tasted alcohol, it got rid of his pain. Of course, that was written after The Ultimates (Ultimate Iron Man came out after the Ultimates), and Tony has well... health issues, so his boozing for good or ill is moot at this point.
But Tony's personality in the IM is interesting. He's mercenary, shallow (he fell in love with his fiancée, because she reminded him of himself - with tits. No joke), his relationships with women are fleeting, and doing this superhero thing because he's found a sort of 'religion' - more to do with his own sudden mortality(Tony is still an agnostic/atheist in this version) than anything else.
You get the feeling that he's hosting The Ultimate Avengers as a mixed bag. Yeah, he's making mad money out of 'em, but he's also actually establishing relationships - helping Cap out, running interference on Pym, etc. It's been interesting watching his character develop in The Avengers.
Which is why I think he and Steve will be relatively close if the series goes on, because Tony is just chill to Steve's intensity.

This.

I heard that.

Re: Erm... I'd recommend The Ultimates over Ultimate Iron man
Of course, Tony had me at hello with the whole sex tape thing (I love seeing Tony en flagrante delicto ) lol. I definitely check out some Ultimates!
LOL. Yeah, that sex tape

Re: Moar Ultimates!
I knew about Tony's body-is-brain thing, but drinking really numbs that? Kind of a clever way to let him get away with boozing 24/7.
I will dig through the s_d tags, it might take forever since I'm on dialup.
According to Orson Scott Card's canon, yes
But Tony's personality in the IM is interesting. He's mercenary, shallow (he fell in love with his fiancée, because she reminded him of himself - with tits.
