I take it this is the result? *grins* This is from Ultimatum...I think I heard from scans_daily that this is going to be the end of the ultimate-verse...is that now a good or a bad thing?
Good - in that Hitch is coming back to write The Ultimates?
Loeb's stint is finished after this run. But from what I've gathered, they're going to like, try and have an 'event' in the Ultimates every 12 issues. Man, are they kidding me? The entire Ult universe is always in a state of flux, this won't make it any better.
...my god. I might have to give the Ultimates a second chance. Considering they made me hate Cap and Tony, which is no easy feat, we'll have to try this.... *WARY*
Tony's a proper skeaze in Ultimates, but his fits of generosity makes me like him. For instance, when he gave Captain America his old WWII helmet, and despite Tony's misgivings, fashioned a T'challa suit for Steve so that the latter could be near Jan. Also, Tony just doesn't take himself seriously, I think it's because of his mortality and all.
Steve's self righteousness tends to get to me at times, but then I remember that he's really a man out of his time, and bless him, he's trying. I think he should just forget Jan though. For serious.
I treat Ultimates as if it's crack fic. I know this is the script that Marvel movies are supposedly studying (I think IM: the movie was based on a composite of both 616 and Ultimate Tony) hence the black Nick Fury.
If anything, I can recommend The Ultimate Avengers feature length cartoon. It's Cap centric, but he's more earnest than a dick.
Tony flat out pissed me OFF in Ultimates. Not as bad as Cap, however. Like, seriously. I HATE Ultimate!Cap with a passion. Like, reading more than an issue or 2 at a time will make me violently twitch. My friends can attest to this. I started ranting on Twitter when I went back and tried to reread it.
U!Cap is everything that was wrong with the 40s, as mechanicaljewel said. 616!Cap is everything that's RIGHT with it. And I agree, whole heartedly.
...if they DARE make the movies more Ultimate than 616, I think I'm going to scream. The fact that SLJ is supposed to stay as Fury is making me uneasy. Same with the whole "Avenger Initiative." I don't MIND the 'verse itself....just the way our boys end up. I love Tony, a lot, but Ultimates!Tony? There's what, 2 very different versions of him. I picked it up, was "meh" about it, mostly read because of Orson Scott Card and...bleh.
I LOVED Loeb. He's fantastic as a writer. ...of course, Ultimates is Mark Millar~ Is it any wonder I hate it as much as I do?
I just treat The Ultimates as crack fic. I think the novelizations are good (Tomorrow's men and... Against all Enemies) in that Tony is proper snarky, and really gets his hits in, especially when he and Steve start snarking off at each other. LOL.
I don't read Ultimate Ironman much, I think Tony Stark in The Ultimates is a more palpable version. I do like 616 Tony Stark though, in the sense that he does try to live up to the notion of to whom much is given, much is expected. The Ult Tony? Not so much, but he seems to be getting there... in tiny steps.
You must read it, the book is crack fic. Tony gets in some digs at Steve's expense. Stark calls Rogers a facist wrapped in the American flag. LOL. Because I love my new fandom, let me show you it.
Context: Steve leaks Tony's special invention of detecting an alien to the world. Tony, Fury and Steve are having it out in Fury's office.
"Oh for Pete's sake," Steve said. "Are you really going to get self righteous about this?"
"No Steve, I am going to stay angry. You might be able to bamboozle the general here with your line about the people, and dirty jobs, and whatever else, but I'm going to tell you what that is. You've always been a latent fascist wrapped in a flag that we all happen to love, and we've cut you too much slack for it. Not anymore."
Steve took a step toward Tony. "Knock it off," he said.
"Go to hell," Tony said. "You want to take a swing at me, go right ahead. Who are you serving? Whoever fed you SKR TechEnt, why do you think they did it? Do you think they care about the people? Who are 'the people' anyway?"
"They are the ones I rode a Nazi rocket for," Steve said, moving even closer to Tony. They're the ones I pledged my life to, and if you're about to say that they don't know who I am and don't care what I've done, I'm here to tell you it doesn't matter. I belive in them. You don't believe in a damn thing except your bank balance."
"The people, huh?" Tony said. "Shouldn't you say, der Volk?"
Faster than Fury could see, Steve leveled Tony with a pile-driver right hand.
maybe I will by the third volume when it comes out. I was warned by a fair amount of people that the storyling and chataerization were lacking but *meh*
I like Ultimates too much not to get Vol 3 I think, and this just adds to the need.
Ultimates is actually what got me back into comics in general and Avengers specifically.
I hate (and am embarrassed) to say this but I never liked the Avengers growing up. Whenever the group showed up in the comic series I was reading, without waiting to find out WTF is going on they'd immediately beat the crap out of people, and usually the wrong people.So I was reading this at like 10-13 and figured they had to be the dumbest collection of heroes ever, and never re-evaluated the position until now. ^^;;;
So I had no canon for Ultimate to bump into and the character were not running about beating up people without at least an understandable reason (the granted, often still a dumb reason, especially Steve, who needs a leash), so it's my first Universe ^^
But I get were people come from with being bugged by Ultiamtes. Ultimate Spiderman hurts my brain sometimes because Spiderman is what I grew up with so I'm like OMG Aunt may is in a PINK FLOYD SHIRT! WTF is WRONG WITH YOU *flail* (also Peter's hair, I realize it's dumb to not read a comic because of a characters hair . . but there you have it. It really bothers m sometimes).
Jan is hellbent on kicking him out and going well... going. If I were NIck Fury, I'd shut that ish down with the quickness though. Jan is too needy, too emotionally effed up to be getting on with anyone. Cap? Is just too messed up to see it. Oy.

If the Ultimates take on Hank and Jan didn't make me want to spit nails, I might almost be tempted to read it now ^_^.
