WELL the rumour mill says he'll survive but not headline the book anymore.
So I want to see a new comic where Amnesiac!Tony and JustBackFromTimeTravel!Steve go on a series of wacky adventures, not being Cap and Iron Man, fighting evil and gradually regaining Tony's memory and talking their shit out and eventually being proper friends again. And then making out, while I'm wishing. They can call it Tales of Suspense: Roadtrip.
Also, can someone explain to me (as someone who has only recently gotten into comics and is attempting to absorb fifty plus years of events), what the difference is between the Invincible Iron Man title and the regular Iron Man title?
One possibility is that when the rumor mill says "he" will not headline the book, the "he" refers to Tony Stark, not Iron Man. There have been a number of other people in the suit: Happy Hogan, Eddie March, James Rhodes, etc.
ETA: Marvel could even bring back the sentient armor. I'd love to see that. The sentient armor could be all wah wah wah over the death of his true love Tony, and vow to avenge his death. Ultron/Jocasta/Sentient Armor OT3!
This is blasphemous, every time I look at it I can't help but feeling angry at the latest Iron Man writer. I think that cover cheapens Cap's death and the importance that Steve has in Tony's life - and I'm not talking just as a Steve/Tony fangirl, but also as a comics fan: I like it when the characters are well written, when they are consistent, and that cover just screams THAT'S-OOC-AND-WRONG to me.
I found this completely disrespectful. I understand they wanted to draw a parallelism, but imo they've done it the worst way possible. "The Confession" probably is my favourite scene in the whole Civil War arc - it had a wonderful Tony and showed even deeper shades of his relationship with Steve (even if you can only see it as a friendship) And now they do this?... I can't but find it insulting: to Tony, in the first place, then to Tony&Steve's friendship, and last but not least to the whole Civil War arc. I don't understand what they're trying to do with Tony's character anymore (I guess I'll just have to take a lot of retcon pills to forget this). Still, the 'Disassembled' thing seemed a great idea at the beginning. :-/
Ignoring how annoyed I am with the entire concept of the cover: Check out the grip on the hammer. Thor's clearly waiting to see if he twitches so he can finish him off.
A;SLDKFJA D: Okay, that whole cover is just insulting all the way around. Steve, Tony and even Thor deserve better. This is starting to look like I'm just going to have to go deeper and deeper into Discontinuity. :( I don't think I can even articulate my inner screams of fury right now.
I have a few minor quibbles with the cover. Mostly, I feel that Patrick Zircher’s cover just isn't as well-drawn and -colored as Alex Maleev's page. Overall, though, I like it a whole lot, and I'm happily looking forward to the story.
All signs point to them wiping away everything that's happened and just having everyone "see" that Tony was "right" and forgetting entirely everything they may ever have known about how redemption arcs work. I mean, maybe it's just that I was raised on different stories, but...Step One: admit that you were wrong. Because, you know, people are wrong all the time, and learning to admit it is an important part of learning to be human. I mean, if I am at least aware that sometimes you have to fess up and say, "I was wrong, I hurt my friends, and there may be an explanation but there's no excuse," then the heroes damn well better be.
Redemption Arcs (a Complete Moron's Guide Step One: admit to yourself that you were wrong. Step Two: admit to others that you were wrong. Step Three: work to make it right. Step Four: ??? Step Five: Profit! And by profit, I mean hugs!
I'd be perfectly happy just ignoring all the badwrongwhy things Tony's done, but the arbiters of canon are supposed to know better. They wanted it to be canon above our protests; they had best make it canon, rather than having it happen and then vanish. ("But it would make the character unusable just when he's got movies and stuff!" "Well, then, you should've thought of that before you did it, shouldn't you?")
Honestly, I think it's kind of cheap. The original moment in CW: The Confession was so powerful because it said so much about Tony, and Steve, and their relationship, and what the whole Civil War arc had done to them. It had impact because it had proper build-up. This version seems to be striving to get the same affect through sheer power of association, but frankly, Fraction hasn't earned it. And I say this as someone who actually likes Fraction's Iron Man run a lot more than 90% of the fandom seems to.
If Thor had actually played an important role in the World's Most Wanted arc, if Fraction had actually done something with Tony and Thor's past friendship and current conflict, then this might've worked. As it is, I find myself thinking "Dude, make your own iconic moments, don't go stealing somebody else's."
I dunno. I guess my first thought was that it was nice that someone was remembering that Tony and Thor used to be friends. I'm a Tony/Steve fan as much as the next woman, but he did have other relationships, that were important to him.
On the other hand, it does seem kind of cheap. I am not at all impressed by IIM so far, and this does not make me want to read it.
Important relationships or no important relationships, unless they do some serious plotting in the next, oh, two issues, Thor still hates his ass to a degree that mourning his passing would be sorely unlikely, which just makes this cover's concept seem even cheaper.
I can kinda see why they would do this, hey on of the Big three/original Avengers died! What did you do last time? Hey look the remaining Big Three was mad at/was fighting with the one that just died, just like the last time, lets make a homage/parallel/rip off that!
Forgetting that 1) The tragedy of the last time was that if they have had time to talk, it would have been settled, it didn't have and shouldn't have ended the way it did and 2)Both sides had points and made mistakes, here Tony made an evil clone of Thor. Thor has every reason to be pissed off/never forgive Tony, especially with no apology.
3) Talking to someone who can't hear you was tragic before because Steve died things were not resolved, it wasn't worth the price, it was a complicated moral issue that got out of hand, here's why I did what I did because you wanted to know and now I'll never really be able to tell you. What on earth would Thor have to tell Tony's corpse? Fuck you, what the Hell, etc because if it's I'm sorry and sad now that your dead everything is forgiven, I'll be very disappointed, because Tony has not earned that (yet) from Thor.
4) Civil War is called (by us anyway) the-Most-Terrible-Break-Up-of Tony and Steve for a reason, it was about them for the most part and the Confession was to end to that conflict. There was build up to it, it was a long time coming. When was the last time Tony and Thor shared panel space/dialogue/anything?
It is a lovely cover though, and I hope Fraction does better then most of us feel he is doing/will do :/
I just want to know...why is Larroca still on the title? Ugh, the art pains me. The man is just... unprofessional.
Ehhh... I have my issues re: the cover, because at the end of the day, Tony (as much as he's my boy) did bad things and he has to man up. Tony Stark is self aware enough to say, "You know what, I did it, and it was my bad, so here's me making amends."
I... just... oy.
Oh, well, there's always Ultimates.
Re: Eh, I've already kvetched in d_s it will be tl:dr here
beyond the content issues, which I agree with, this cover makes me weep because it reminds me that the art doesn't have to be torture to look at, the way Larroca's is.
I remember sending letters to the editor of the title, and I mean *gestures wildly* are they blind? The art is so unprofessional? Larocca can't draw, and the colourist must be colourblind.

My guess is that even though Thor was angry at him, he still loves his friend. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

I like the cover, and I understand why they did it, but seriously, at the end it just doesn't make any sense.
Of course, maybe they'll do something to fix that, but I'm sure that's just wishfull thinking on my part.
