Soooo . . New Steve outfit?

My first though is . . . OMG Ultimate!Steve has attacked and replaced 616 Steve.

I don't know about anyone else, but my canon is that Steve went to Bucky and asked Bucky for some rejected design that Bucky didn't use because he didn't have time to come up for something for himself. So Bucky gave him this one. Steve then asked why Bucky didn't use it because it look far less goofy and Bucky said he felt obligated to have wings on his head. But then in all seriousness, with the uncovered head and the general look, he'd passed on it because he felt the costume looked more like and updating of his Bucky uniform then it did of Cap's uniform.

Five hours later what Bucky said finally sinks in and Steve goes HEY! Wait a second, and runs after Bucky.

Anyway
It's not that I dislike the outfit. I actually think i'ts spiffy. It's just not a 616 Steve Rogers look in my mind. It's a Bucky Barnes or Ultimate Steve Rogers look.

On the other hand, relevant to this community, I think Tony would adore this. *L*

To me, the costume is strongly reminiscent of Fighting American, a 1950's character created by Simon & Kirby ... as a parody of Captain America.

Costume's giving me rather vivid flashbacks to the '90s.

I don't like giving him a gun. I don't see how that's in character.

I'm puzzled by his gaiters. Did he return from his time travels with weak shins?

I'm just kind of bemused by the whole thing.

(It's not much like Ult Steve, either.)

They're more like the old spats that soldiers wore back in the day.

I'm thorn between liking this and being a bit disturbed.

The boots confuse me a little but I like them, I love the gloves but the gun just...no.

I do agree with Tony loving this...Loving it I say? He would totally be over Steve the entire day.

Eh, not digging the one-piece bodysuit look. It's okay for other superheroes but somehow feels lacking here. Do like his gear and webbing though, except for the gun (what were they thinking?)

[identity profile] northstar-rocks.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmm i like the shirt fore some reason the sleeves make him look even sexier (is that possible?)
I don't like the the colour brown with the red and blit just doesnt work well for mi like the gloves.

[identity profile] marinarusalka.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda like the shirt and the gloves, but hate the guns. Also, what's with the shin guards? He looks like he's about to catch a baseball game.

Mixed feelings but yeah, Tony would love this thing so idk, it works for me ;D

Ults Steve's uniform is miles ahead of this one.

It's so... overdone and the painterly quality of this work harkens back to the 60s. I expect to see references to 'pinko commie' in the same breath or something. I approve of the footwear, though.

[identity profile] adrian-chan.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I approve of the new outfit, I do. It's definitely...different, and my mind might have a hard time reconciling this with "Captain America", but I could get used to it. I like it.

I think the new Cap outfit and the new Iron Man suit sort of match each other in coolness now. Because you can't completely upgrade one and not the other!

But like I said. I'll have a hard time accepting this as Captain America.

...But now I must do fanart!

[identity profile] ladysunflower.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Love it. 616!Steve always has needed more gear. I can be okay with the guns as long as they write it well enough.

I do like the boots. I think the top would have been better without the horiztonal white lines. Looks a little too much like Air Force. But I LOVE the red stripes down the side. Pant would have been better if material was a bit more loose/thicker. Top can be tight, but pants shouldn't.

But what can I say...our Steve does love his tight pants.

It's not bad, really, but it seems so war-like compared to his usual bright and superhero-y costume. The cynic in me is saying that this is what his costume in the movie will look more like, and so they're introducing it into the comics. Either that, or Steve is still in his Civil War mind-set when he designed this, which, okay, but what about the Heroic Age?

[identity profile] autumn-lily.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the idea for the Heroic Age is that Bucky will be doing the major Captain America role, while Steve will be more in the periphery.

This X a billion.

ITA. I mean, I *know* Steve's costume is goofy-looking as all hell, but that's part of what I like about him -- that he's not Srs Military Captain Is Srs, that he designed his own costume, and that costume is kind of dorky. Also, I like that Steve, and only Steve, can imbue the classic Cap costume, headwings and all, with gravitas. It's easier on the artist to give him a dignified costume to begin with, but that's not the point to me. The point is that he's wearing scalemail and wings on his head, and yet everyone does what he says. Because that's awesome.

[identity profile] fred-god-of.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a really good point about the wings on his head.
Also he wears Pirate boots (I miss them!) and people ignore them because he is cap.

[identity profile] carnadosa.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
On one hand, it's pretty hot. On the other hand, I can't look at it and not think of commercial airline logos. The wing effect that the lines around the star are having? Yeah. Totally commercial airline. Plus, why no cowl?

Well, if you actually look at his belt that doesn't look like a gun holster to me. It just looks like pouches.

[personal profile] muccamukk 2010-04-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
'90s pouches, yes, but in other promo art, he's holding a gun.

[identity profile] autumn-lily.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course Tony would love it....he'd love to take it OFF of Steve. ;)

[identity profile] autumn-lily.livejournal.com 2010-04-18 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
In a more serious note, I like it. It's not what we're used to seeing for Captain America, and that's good because Steve ISN'T really filling that role anymore, Bucky is. So naturally, Steve's going for a different look since the part of his life that was kind of taken over by the Captain America role is over - Steve's going to move on (which might be better, since now he can grow as a character beyond that heavy iconography). He's still going to be Steve, just not Cap in the official sense.

[identity profile] smiley-bandit.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
oops........AT least there isn't little wings on his mask. UGH.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Like many have expressed so far, I don't like the guns. That's so not-Steve that it's ludicrous. Someone missed the characterization train.

For the rest of the outfit... Not bad. Not what I would have gone for, but it looks very utilitarian, at least, and doesn't drop his colors. I'm still reconciling myself to Steve being not!Cap, though. :( I console myself that it won't likely last long, what with the movie coming out and all.

[identity profile] viva-la-yaoi.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I find the outfit to be very practical and aesthetically pleasing. The darker blue and red with the white mix well with the brown and the pattern itself is very easy on the eyes. The lack of a cowl actually fits with the outfit too.

On the other hand though the dark colors make this outfit seem more accustomed to someone with a darker personality than 616!Steve like, as you said, Bucky or Ult!Steve. The general design is a tad overused too, which is a bit of a personal downer since his old outfit is so unique and recognizable. Also, when I look at the outfit, I immediately think that he's going off to do mercenary work, or to fly a jet or jump out of one.

Moreover, I'll agree with everyone else on the whole gun thing. Steve is primarily a melee fighter (although he often uses his shield as a projectile) and giving him a gun seems not only out of character, but against his normal fighting style as well.

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I love it...and I'm not sure why. I just wanna molest him...is that a bad thing? Yes..probably.

Jesus, I haven't heard this much costume whining since the first X-Men movie came out. Oh, no, the guy who's likely going to be leading the espionage team doesn't have a brilliantly bright, easily recognized costume!

And yet you all adored it when he was wearing the generic SHIELD ops garb, which is solid black.

He has Senior Airman chevrons. That is my only complaint about the costume. They inadvertantly demoted him (and now have him sporting Air Force rank at that!). And I can't think of Fighting American without thinking about Leifeld's art...and that makes me sad. So I won't think about it anymore. ;-;

The complainging about the guns amuses me. He's a soldier, ffs. He's used guns plenty of times. He didn't use it as Cap because he was doing the role-model angle. He's not Cap right now, so he doesn't have to avoid the guns. Hell, Bucky doesn't even use the guns to kill now that he's Cap. guns =/= Instakiller. And what's to say he's suddenly going all Frank Castle on us now that he's packing? He may just tranq and pistol whip like crazy.

I for one hope this look makes its way into a game. And if they can snag David Hayter to VA for him, my "Steve = Solid Snake" dreams will be made, and I can squee

[identity profile] lisiche.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Can I add in my desire for him to have Solid Snake's MGS2 bondage corset here? It seems appropriate now.
