Cap_Ironman NYC Movie meetup! Come for Captain America and/or dinner!
A mixed pile of slashers, ficcers and Captain America fans is having an evening, after-work expedition to eat good Chinese food and then see Captain America THIS THURSDAY! Seriously, it doesn't matter if you've never met me or any of the other guests at this before - the more the merrier!
Dinner is at Grand Sichuan at St Marks at 6:30. (23 St. Marks, a block from the Astor Place subway) Yes, they specialize in spicy, but I'm a wimp and can testify to the tastiness of their non-spicy foods. They also have vegetarian options. Better yet, they like geeks (they're the traditional afterparty for the monthly KGB readings), they're set up for groups, and they encourage family-style sharing for the table! (Keeps the price down)
We will then proceed to the AMC Empire 25 theater for the 8pm show, NOT IN 3D, Buy your tickets ahead of time, people, or I am not responsible for your miserable fate!
You can have dinner and no movie! We're happy to have you! You can have movie and no dinner, that's cool too! Mix and match time!

If they've got Thor showing, you should totally go see it. I finally got around to seeing it myself at a local discount theatre here in Louisville just the other week - it's really good. I enjoyed it. I still have to see Iron Man 2 before next year, as I haven't seen it yet.
I wish I had more people to see stuff like that with too....or, you know, that the friends I have who DO love superheroes and all that actually lived anywhere near me.

And you totally need to see Iron Man 2! I don't remember if I'd rented it, or, like, saw it at the discount theater in the town where I went to undergrad (maybe I got it with the pay-per-view thing on my parents' tv when I visited for a week last Christmas or something?), but I saw it and it was good. (Also, discount theaters are pretty cool, as long as they show decent movies. The one where I went to undergrad was in a mall that was right on the bus line, and student IDs pretty much functioned as semi-permanent bus passes. The tickets were like two-fifty max, and they sometimes had really good movies.)
And... Yeah, I've got one friend who likes Batman. Just Batman. I don't think she even gives a damn about the rest of the Batclan. She also goes to grad school on the East Coast, so I never get to see her anymore. I'm also moderately sure few or more likely none of my friends have ever even heard of Captain America or Iron Man, or at least hadn't before the movies came out. There's maybe a couple of guys in my university program who know who they are, though I don't think any of them would be members here, if you get my drift.

Iron Man 2 is actually available for streaming on Netflix, so I should be able to see it easily...it's just a matter of making the time. And as I am a teacher and the kids are back two weeks from Monday, the time is currently the issue. Definitely too late for the discount theatre on that one. :) Our discount theatre here in Louisville is pretty good - $3 a day with a $2 special on Tuesdays.
I've got friends geeky enough to go to ComicCon or other conventions. And for one of them, she and her husband actually have a "comic room" for all their comics and action figures and the like (doubles as an office, I think), but they live in Australia, so that's definitely not convenient.

Sounds like the school you teach at starts up pretty early; the university doesn't get going until a month after that, and I only work part time, so time isn't such an issue as long as I time my plans with regards to my schedule. Seems like you've got a pretty good discount theater, though. :P
...I've never actually been to a convention. And I don't think any of my friends have either. But I would love to go to one someday (given half a chance, I'd probably go in costume, even, haha, as long as I had the time to make one). Then again, I would be severely tempted to, like, go as pre-serum Steve Rogers, despite the fact that 1) I wear glasses and rarely my contacts because they make my eyes itch; 2) I'm a redhead, and in no way would consider using any sort of permanent dye even though my hair is the proper length; 3) I'm a woman (yes, I'm female and have hair that looks something like that of an American man in the 1940s). Plus, I wouldn't know where to get the proper sorts of clothes, since they don't really make trousers like that any more (and I really am not at all handy with my sewing machine for more than repairs), and I have no idea where they sell suspenders. And if I showed up to a comics convention in something that wasn't made of spandex, probably everybody would assume I was just dressed funny and not actually in costume. ;P
Ooh... Australia. I want to see Australia, someday.
