"You have the whole world in front of you, Tony," Steve says, slowly. "When you get off this boat, there's nothing to stop you from living the life you want. If that's as a mechanic with a nice Alpha--you can have that. Just because what you grew up with is trash, doesn't mean that all alphas are. You can still have exactly what you want."

Tony laughs, and it feels brittle, sharp, cutting at his throat as it spills between them. "There aren't nice Alphas, Captain. No one is nice enough to walk away from a billion dollar fortune for someone like me."

"I would," Steve says, and it feels like a confession, like something he doesn't mean to share, and all the more precious for it.

While spending the week in LA on business, Tony impulsively hires a male escort to keep him company after his girlfriend breaks up with him.

His life would be a lot easier if he could just stick to painting other things. Landscapes for example. Landscapes were nice.
But then again landscapes didn’t have that glint in their eye, or that body that had been built from hard engineering and years of trying to do good. They didn’t have that inherent charm and good looks that won them Sexiest Man of the Year four times.
By comparison, landscapes were a joke.
Steve causes himself a whole heap of trouble when he starts to paint pictures of Tony.

Imagine his surprise when someone actually does!

Steve and Tony are back on track as friends and spending a lot of time together as they form a new Avengers team. But Steve is again in a rocky relationship with Sharon and Tony is dating a new woman. Steve struggles as his long-dormant crush on Tony comes back with a vengeance because he's supposed to be a good man and he doesn't want to lose Tony as a friend. What is he supposed to do as a friend when Tony's new girlfriend turns out to be not good for Tony?

Tony wonders, sometimes, what his life would have been like if Steven had lived. If Tony had been able to press a bit more life into his body and help him live a little longer. If he hadn't been cursed with an unending life to look over his seven incarnations and fail, time and again, to bring him home safe.

A Steve-as-King-Arthur AU with Tony as the undying Merlin. Written in the vein of BBC's Merlin, but focused also on the later reincarnations of Steve rather than just the first one. Takes place roughly in time with A1 and CATWS.

The Tesseract glows an eerie blue that reminds him of his lover’s eyes, and he caresses it, feeling the tingle of power coming off the casing of the stone. It makes the blood on his uniform look black and sleek, like a carapace.

“Take me to him,” he asks. The stone, infinitely knowing, does.
