Original Sin: what is it and why do we care?

Original Sin is the Marvel comics event beginning in May.  It's being described as CSI: Spandex meets Marvel's Civil War meets SHIELD's public exposure in the MCU (imagine a pair of cosmic VCR eyeballs instead of a file blasted online).

Not joking about the eyeballs.

The second rule of Marvel comic events is: Even the most decent superheroes turn into superassholes when convenient for the plot.  (The first rule of course is that superheroes punching each other sells more comics than superheroes working together to punch supervillains.)  Original Sin is not going to be an easy story to dive into without some background info, since its intent is to unearth the ugly little secrets our favorite heroes have been hiding in their closets.

But what does all this have to do with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in particular?  I'm glad you asked.

If the words Illuminati and mindwipe don't make you cringe, here's a summary of the whole sordid mess.  Original Sin promises to break the hidden issues between Steve and Tony wide open and presumably put them at each other's throats.  (Only one will be left standing at the end, yet again, etc.)

It looks like the book we'll really, really want is Avengers #29.  (Beware spoilers, feels, and lots of shirtless Steve.)
