Newsarama Cap Casting Poll!

Movie stuff's allowed here, right?

What with a director and writers being announced for the Captain America movie, Newsarama's been running polls about who should play our beloved Steve Rogers.  They're down to the top three choices of Newsarama readers:
  1. Mark Valley
  2. Aaron Eckhart
  3. Nathan Fillion
I already voted*, and you should too!  (You have to have a Newsarama account, but it's not a painful sign-up)

*for Mark Valley, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever even said "Captain America movie" to me :D

Mhmm, Nathan Fillion please.

Because we can't go back in time and get a younger fitter Val Kilmer.

... So?

And they grow them mighty fine up there.

Oh damn Paul Gross would have made a great Cap in his younger days (not that he isn't still hot but he'd have to be in his Due South period to pull of Cap).

I'd be pretty upset if they were trying to choose between a Canadian and an American and picked the latter just because he was born in a certain country. I want them to cast Cap based on talent and looks (not in the shallow sense, just someone who looks as close as possible to some average of all the artists' interpretation of the character). Country of birth and citizenship shouldn't be a factor at all, a good actor is a good actor.

I'm not arguing against Mark Valley, or for anyone in particular, I just don't like seeing the argument that a Canadian shouldn't do it just because he's not American. It seems like it negates the point of acting, to me. I don't think it's a stretch for a Canadian actor to understand Cap's patriotism, and to play it well, so I don't see why citizenship should be an issue at all.

But I'd say the same thing for Bond. I wouldn't want BOND to be American any more than I'd want Cap with a British accent, but if there was an American actor who did the job and could pull the accent off, then I'd have no issues with it. I don't think about the actor while I'm watching a movie, that's the whole point for me.

They are all WAY too old to play Cap, if they're going with his real origin story. I haven't seen a single actor I would actually want to play him.

Truthfully, my heart wishes for Aaron Eckhart, just because, damn can he really carry a great speech. My brain says he's a little old for the part (but then RDJ looks 30+ and Tony is supposed to be 20's in Iron Man). We'll see how he does as the lead role in an action movie. If he does great, I'd be sold.

Realistically, I'd pick Mark Valley.

If I had to choose, Eckhart, but only for the chin. I'm with [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel, though. I haven't seen anyone who screams "Captain America", yet.

See, I'm most invested in the idea of Steve Rogers as that scrawny kid who becomes Cap and is totally awesome at it but is still that scrawny sensitive artist at heart. I'd much rather he remind me of kids I've gone to school with.

I was thinking more along the opposite lines. Captain America might be a hard sell these days in the non-American world; casting a Canadian (or what have you) could be a saving grace when you look from that angle.

Actually, after look at IMDb, I'm going with Valley. :9
He looks yummy.

Captain Kirk was Canadian, and he pulled off the Iowa boy thing just fine.

I still like Mark Valley the best out of the three plus that one.

Aw man, those are three really good choices. I've always pictured Aaron Eckhart myself, but I hold a soft spot for Nathan Fillion.

Don't look at me, I've been shipping Canada/America the whole time. :D

...and wow, vote by commenting?

I guess it's more secure than using a poll, maybe...

re: age of the actors

Steve absolutely cannot be too old, because he was very young when he enlisted, and people enlisting then was very young. By the time US joined the war it was very late, so he was really only active for a few years before he was on ice, he has to be in his early or mid twenties, and with the soldier serum he would look the part.

Tony on the other hand, while he graduated early, the trip to Afghanistan could have took place early in his career or as late as if he's in his 30s. Plus, Tony is canonly a heavy drinker, and if he does drugs and doesn't sleep and otherwise treats his body poorly, he's going to look oooollld.

There should totally be some photos of the candidates set next to RDJ's, cause chemistry is way important, even if there is no hoyay, they are canon best friends.

w00t Aaron Eckhardt! *fistpump*

I'm so sending this to my comics buddy, he of the Aaron-Eckhardt-nahh school of thinking.

I don't know if you've seen it, but a little moment in Fringe had a picture of Mark Valley with a US flag as background and I went HOLY SHIT, IT'S CAP! And ever since I haven't been able to get it out of my mind, lol.
