Newsarama Cap Casting Poll!

Movie stuff's allowed here, right?

What with a director and writers being announced for the Captain America movie, Newsarama's been running polls about who should play our beloved Steve Rogers.  They're down to the top three choices of Newsarama readers:
  1. Mark Valley
  2. Aaron Eckhart
  3. Nathan Fillion
I already voted*, and you should too!  (You have to have a Newsarama account, but it's not a painful sign-up)

*for Mark Valley, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever even said "Captain America movie" to me :D

Mhmm, Nathan Fillion please.

Because we can't go back in time and get a younger fitter Val Kilmer.

Are you some kind of mind reading person? I just had the Val Kilmer conversation last week with someone else. (fwiw I think he could get fit if proerly motivated. :)

Perhaps you *are* that person, and kijikun is a sock, and ahhhhhhhhhhh

No, no. Nathan Fillion needs to play Hal Jordan. Because fanboys want that with an intense and probably sexual passion.

I thought I was the only one who wanted him for Cap! :D

Daniel Craig can also pull off a very convincing American accent.
ext_18328: (Default)

Daniel Craig is already 'the face' of the Bond franchise

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2008-11-20 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
So that couldn't work. The person who plays Captain America is going to be tied to multi-picture deals and various cross overs. Craig, although I think he's hawt, doesn't look "All American" in the way Captain America is supposed to look.

[identity profile] harmonyangel.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They are all WAY too old to play Cap, if they're going with his real origin story. I haven't seen a single actor I would actually want to play him.

[identity profile] crimsonquills.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that they're all way too old, given Cap's origin, but considering that the same actor has a 99% chance of being contracted to play him in the Avengers movie as well, I think they kind of have to age movie!Steve up in his origin. Because if the rest of the Avengers are 30+ (and while RDJ is the only one cast, he makes me think it'll lean that way), an early 20's Captain America is going to look like a kid next to them, which is the wrong impression to send, given that he has years of experience fighting a war when they're all new to the heroing gig.

I guess RDJ could end up being the "old man" of the group, but that thought just depresses me, to be honest. I feel like it'd put a kind of generation gap barrier between him and the rest of them and make it hard for him to connect, emotionally, on the kind of level I like to see in teams like the Avengers.

But do we really want a older Iron Man and a 20 something Cap? People though RDJ was too old to play Iron Man but he did a damn fine job. I'm sure they can pull it off.

Though I think they might do with the movie is have 'young' Steve at the start to set up his origin then maybe jumping a bit because really the last scene of the movie needs to be Cap frozen in ice.

But since they already have RDJ as Tony, they can't cast someone too young or he won't be able to hold his own onscreen against RDJ and Edward Norton. They'll put him on camera next to them, and he'll just fade into the background in temrs of screen presence. Plus, like [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills said, the audience needs to believe that a bunch of 30-something Avengers would automatically accept him as their leader -- which wouldn't happen if he's a kid compared to the rest of them.

There's also the fact that Hollywood never casts someone who's actually young enogh for the role in a superhero movie. Ever. Tony should have been 21/22 in the Iron Man movie. Bruce Wayne should have been early 20s in Batman begins. And Toby Maguire really ought to have been still high-schol-age in Spiderman. Comics fans know all these guys got their start in their teens/early 20s, but the average theater audience expects action heroes to be guys in their 30s/40s, so that's what we get onscreen.

[identity profile] jynx.livejournal.com 2008-11-20 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Cap was 28 when the war ended. How is that old? >> They can age anyone down to their 30s

[identity profile] gogodgene.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Truthfully, my heart wishes for Aaron Eckhart, just because, damn can he really carry a great speech. My brain says he's a little old for the part (but then RDJ looks 30+ and Tony is supposed to be 20's in Iron Man). We'll see how he does as the lead role in an action movie. If he does great, I'd be sold.

Realistically, I'd pick Mark Valley.

re: age of the actors

[identity profile] hohaiyee.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve absolutely cannot be too old, because he was very young when he enlisted, and people enlisting then was very young. By the time US joined the war it was very late, so he was really only active for a few years before he was on ice, he has to be in his early or mid twenties, and with the soldier serum he would look the part.

Tony on the other hand, while he graduated early, the trip to Afghanistan could have took place early in his career or as late as if he's in his 30s. Plus, Tony is canonly a heavy drinker, and if he does drugs and doesn't sleep and otherwise treats his body poorly, he's going to look oooollld.

There should totally be some photos of the candidates set next to RDJ's, cause chemistry is way important, even if there is no hoyay, they are canon best friends.

:D EXACTLY!

If I had to choose, Eckhart, but only for the chin. I'm with [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel, though. I haven't seen anyone who screams "Captain America", yet.

[identity profile] geekychan.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, after look at IMDb, I'm going with Valley. :9
He looks yummy.

Mark Valley...

Aw man, those are three really good choices. I've always pictured Aaron Eckhart myself, but I hold a soft spot for Nathan Fillion.

...and wow, vote by commenting?

[identity profile] hohaiyee.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it's more secure than using a poll, maybe...

[identity profile] jwaneeta.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
w00t Aaron Eckhardt! *fistpump*

I'm so sending this to my comics buddy, he of the Aaron-Eckhardt-nahh school of thinking.

[identity profile] nekare.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you've seen it, but a little moment in Fringe had a picture of Mark Valley with a US flag as background and I went HOLY SHIT, IT'S CAP! And ever since I haven't been able to get it out of my mind, lol.

[identity profile] melisus.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh... I don't really have anyone in particular in mind for Captain America. I won't be able to critique anyone they pick until the movie actually gets made and I see it.

But maybe that's just because I've always envisioned Steve Rogers to be sort of a young Paul Newman sort of character.

[identity profile] marinarusalka.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm in the "hire an unknown" camp. None of the guys suggested so far are really doing it for me. Blond, blue-eyed leading men seem out of fashion these days, which means there must be lots of talented but desperate unknown actors out there. Surely one of them can pull it off.

[identity profile] geuna.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooo, but they all have "THE JAWLINE!" Though I really do like Eckhart...

[identity profile] benphrinse-rio.livejournal.com 2008-11-20 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, this is kind of hard, because, despite looking a bit older, they all look like they would be good. I have to go with Mark Valley, because Aaron will always be Harvey Dent to me (I know it sounds odd).

[identity profile] kesomon.livejournal.com 2008-11-20 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can't decide! Mark looks more like him, but I don't know him, and I love Nathan. *pouts*

[identity profile] maxdasuki.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I dun care who's goin to play cap, as long he's at late 30's or 40' coz I like a mature heroes. I want Daniel Craig.

BUT if Cap going to look young, I still dun mind slashing him with RDJ coz I love Young SEME. ohhh sorry am I off topic??? runs!
