Newsarama Cap Casting Poll!

Movie stuff's allowed here, right?

What with a director and writers being announced for the Captain America movie, Newsarama's been running polls about who should play our beloved Steve Rogers.  They're down to the top three choices of Newsarama readers:
  1. Mark Valley
  2. Aaron Eckhart
  3. Nathan Fillion
I already voted*, and you should too!  (You have to have a Newsarama account, but it's not a painful sign-up)

*for Mark Valley, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever even said "Captain America movie" to me :D

Steve absolutely cannot be too old, because he was very young when he enlisted, and people enlisting then was very young. By the time US joined the war it was very late, so he was really only active for a few years before he was on ice, he has to be in his early or mid twenties, and with the soldier serum he would look the part.

Tony on the other hand, while he graduated early, the trip to Afghanistan could have took place early in his career or as late as if he's in his 30s. Plus, Tony is canonly a heavy drinker, and if he does drugs and doesn't sleep and otherwise treats his body poorly, he's going to look oooollld.

There should totally be some photos of the candidates set next to RDJ's, cause chemistry is way important, even if there is no hoyay, they are canon best friends.

I might be off on my numbers, but...Steve got froze at age 28. His b-day is 1917. By 1945, he'd be 28, which means any of those actors would be fine. The problem with Eckhart is he will SCREAM "Dent" to everyone. Just like Nathan is gonna scream either "Captain Hammer" or "Mal Renyolds." Valley hasn't been in any famous scifi/fantasy/superhero films, which really lead to making him the prime candidate. This is kinda the same argument as to who was going to replace Dumbledore in HP when Harris died. The majority of people felt Ian Mckellen would have done a bang up job - but he was already firmly "Gandalf" in the public's minds. These are iconic roles. DENT is an iconic role. So's Cap. It's not gonna be a defining role, but it will eliminate them from future superhero films

The actor is going to be the 'face' of the franchise. Eckhart is already a 'face' of the Bat franchise. Damon is already a 'face' of the Bourne franchise, etc, etc.

You're best off going for a great script, great chemistry and tons of fan sentiment (a lot of people still have warm thoughts about Captain America), and then getting an able but lesser known actor to carry the role. Like, before Batman, Christian Bale was a quirky method actor best known for his work in Newsies, American Psycho and The Machinist. Those were great movies critically, but it kept Bale below the radar until he was tapped for Batman. That worked for Bale, big time (unlike say, Keaton was more of Beetlejuice fame than Batman, so a lot of people saw him as the guy who ate bugs). This is why the Burton batman films went to pot, what with Jim Carey (of Ace Ventura movies) and Schwarzenegger of The Terminator franchise playing Mr Freeze.

Chris Nolan saw the light, and went for an actor (Bale) that was off the radar, but had the chops, and lit up the screen. Same thing for when he tapped Eckhart as Two Face and Heath Ledger as The Joker. Well regarded actors, but not 'teh face' of anything.

Same thing for RDJ and the casting for Iron man. RDJ was known as a good actor, but he was off the radar (due to his drug problems, and him having to pay for his own acting insurance, etc), so when he got tapped for Stark it was genius, because you know that RDJ could act, and he wasn't 'the face' of any movie franchise.

Valley works because he has the acting chops, knows the game, can hold his own against RDJ (hopefully, based on the screen tests), and is open to being tied to being the face of a franchise. He'll be Captain bloody America! Cotdamn.

:D EXACTLY!

Exactly! 100% completely agree! People really don't seem to be taking this into account (or the fact Stevie was, ya know, 28 by the end of the war).

Yeah, I've been trying to come up with something else to ADD to this and I can't. You've hit the nail so perfectly on the head, I think I need to worship you. >D
