When he wants to be. Cactus pears in flower form (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0b/Opuntia_ovata_2.jpg) are flashy and sleek enough that they'll attract things despite the spiny bits of the cactus itself. XD
This is for my Harlequin Romance: The Cowboy and the Socialite. If you haven't read it I can get the link for you, if you'd like.
The vegetable thing was completely unintentional. Perhaps my subconscious is telling me something.... Besides, outside of Bananas I can't think of that many phallic fruits.
Oh, I've been meaning to take a look at that when it's done. I have a policy of not reading gay fics set in the past until it's done (at which point I check if there is a happy ending), because there is usually so much persecution angst and suspense. I'm a bit of a history geek, I know the horrible stuff that happens then. So, if it's completely fictional, I can just discount unhappy as one of the AUs, but if it's historical, it stays unhappy because I knew something like that did actually happen.
Well, cucumber is actually a fruit, because it is the part of the vegetable that bears seeds. Ditto for tomato and squash. People tend to associate sweets with fruits though (or at least the use of), sometimes rhubarb sauce is lumped with fruit even though it's a stalk.
Oh, I understand. I'd just like to say umm... if you're looking for any real history in my fic it might be hard to find. Most of my information is from civil war movies (like The Patriot, or Glory) and Wikipedia. Also, by merit of being part of the Harlequin genre, it is gonna end up with a happy ending that is completely unrealistic. I know what your getting at though, with the depressing facts of history- I also try to avoid such things. It's just too sad to think about for long periods of time.
Also, I think the official description of Fruit Vs. Vegetable is based on whether or not you eat it with dinner. That's the legal definition at least. At some point people needed to know the difference for tariff purposes with imports and exports. When it comes down to the biological part of it I have no idea.
I thought squashes had their own category? That's why I didn't list pumpkins- I'm saving squashes for a later poll...
Hey, unrealistically happy is okay as long as people are in character. The universe is full of infinite possibilities and at least a few of them has to be ridiculously happy.
Ok now if this doesn't show some inner consensus about Steve's character I don't know what does.
Granted I said he was a beet . . . I don't know it beets make me think of the army which make me think of Steve. Corn makes me think of my mother, who is not Steve.
I had to put Tony as a Strawberry, just because . . . I feel like there is a metaphor here for relating somehow to how QUICKLY strawberries turn icky. Seriously one minute fine, the next black and gooey and OMG WHAT HAPPENED. That needs to relate to Tony somehow.
Why beets make me think of the army and therefore Steve? I don't know. It seems like the kinda food they'd inflict on you. I don't even know if this is true.
Also for whatever reason that is utterly illogical it make me think of old things. Maybe because my grandparents always had beets, and I knew very few people in my generation who will eat them. That my just be me though.
So of everything on there beets struck me as Steve.
*LOL* I'm glad you like the strawberry=Tony metaphor. I have to admit I cam up with it second. Really Tony is a Strawberry because of my fanart of Chibi!Tony and the giant Strawberry ^^;;
I remember that pic! It was so cute! I had an after thought that beets are sweet - like Steve. The old-fashionedness of beets hadn't occurred to me. I like beets - they were one of the few vegetables my mother could get me to eat when I was a little kid - but I don't really know anyone else who will touch the things either.
I had an after thought that beets are sweet - like Steve
Sweet and good for you! ^__^ I also just realized I associated beets (and carrots)with victory gardens, which his also maybe why I thought of beets = Steve. Granted, of course you can grow other things but beets and carrots are what stuck with me and I don't see Steve as a carrot *L*
So um. I originally said Tony should be a dragon fruit just because of the name, but now I'm leaning towards Prickly Pear because of the T.S. Eliot reference.
i know you know my reasoning for Steve=corn. Thanks to the above comments, I am now incapable of not thinking dirty thoughts on that subject.
I know about your ideas on corn...but think how fun it will be for you to beta that! The euphemisms will be great! You know it's true. Besides we can compare the colour of gold to his hair. among other things
Do you think a T.S. Eliot allusion would be to... intelligent for the story? I wouldn't want anyone to take me seriously.
On the other hand I did put a classical simile in the last chapter. You remember my epic simile. I love saying that because it is actually, in literary terms, an epic simile. I mean, if we can reference Greek Gods, could we mention 20th century poets?

What's this? I missed some crack?
...and is it just me, or did Steve get a lot more phallic vegetables in his options?Re: What's this? I missed some crack?

...and i suppose Eliot would be rolling in his grave if Steve and/or Tony had a Deep Abiding Love for T.S. Eliot that they could Bond Over.

What is more all-American than corn?
Maybe cranberries or syphilis.
