Actors Confirm Auditions Are Underway For Captain America
A couple days ago there was a Captain America Casting Speculation post at
ohnotheydidnt if case you missed it.
So that's the latest!
As for my two cents, Lord, I don't even know anymore. I'm on the dying ship of Jensen Ackles. Yes.... I know it's a pipe dream. Until they actually cast someone other than him I'm going to enjoy my vacation in Shangri La. (Hmm... Jensen and Robert...)
If Marvel was doing a film about current 616-universe Steve Rogers than it would be Mark Valley or bust for me. Valley is Steve Rogers, the problem is I don't think he's right for the direction they are taking the origin story. The production would also have to work around his Human Target schedule. That would mean production would have to wrap by August; that is so not enough time if production starts in June. (And selfishly, I'm enjoying my weekly Steve Rogers, Rorschach, and Emerson Cod snark fest each week. I really want him to keep doing Human Target.)
Thus... I would love to see PATRICK WILSON

ALSO!
I'm concerned about Red Skull (Ralph Fiennes or Christoph Waltz PLZ & THX U!).
THE CASTING process for Marvel's Captain America movie is under way.
Los Angeles-based up-and-coming actor Anderson Davis, who expressed an interest in the role here on The Geek Files in June last year, tells me auditions are going on at present and that he hopes to try for the role over the next few days.
Davis (pictured), who's an ex-athlete and also a fitness model, says he believes the role should be filled by an unknown. In a later piece I ran here, he responded to comments he had received as a result of the first article.
Recently, actor and model Rick Malambri said he had tried for the part, while Chuck actor Ryan McPartlin says he'd like to wield the shield although his response suggested he hadn't screen-tested or been officially approached.
Comic Book Movie reported that Wade Harlan (pictured above) had auditioned and also that American actor Johnny Pacar (pictured below) tweeted with this message on January 18: "Just read for Captain America. What a role to get. If only."
The 28-year-old looks, to me, more like sidekick Bucky or perhaps Steve Rogers before he takes the supersoldier serum that transforms him into the physically-perfect hero.
Previously, Twilight's Kellan Lutz and Chuck star Zachary Levi have both said they are interested in playing the hero, along with Sam Worthington who turned up at an interview in a Captain America T-shirt to make his enthusiasm clear.
Meanwhile, 6ft 5ins actor/model Derek Theler (pictured below) tweeted on January 22: "Call me Steve Rogers" followed by "Captain America tomorrow!"
One Tree Hill actor Robert Buckley (pictured above) has said he wants the role, with Geekweek reporting the 28-year-old as saying: "Well, hands down I would be Captain America. Yeah, it's kind of a no contest right there.
"Having said that, there are so many great books out there, that I'm going to go ahead and just... if Captain America didn't work out, there are a bevy of good choices out there."
The First Avenger: Captain America, directed by Joe Johnston, is set for release on July 22, 2011. The character will then appear in The Avengers team-up movie in 2012.
Captain America is the alter-ego of Second World War soldier Steve Rogers, whose capabilities were enhanced to their peak by a supersoldier serum.
Hurled by an explosion into the North Atlantic ocean, he remained frozen in suspended animation until his body was found and revived by the Avengers decades later.
The character featured in a movie serial in 1944 and then a 1990 film starring Matt Salinger.

Word on the historical accuracy. Please.

I (obviously) haven't seen the script, but depending on how much ground they want to cover, and how much action they want to include, Steve Rogers isn't going to get into uniform until the midpoint of the movie. They could have it be the beginning of Act II. Either way, we're looking at least thirty minutes of just Steve Rogers.
From what Johnston said, they are really going to focus on Steve's struggle with his new powers once he gets him, and him struggling with Captain America. Whoever plays Cap will probably play it as a work-in-progress.
We'll see.

I just caught an episode at my friend's insistence (who had pointed out the speculation about Mark Valley as Cap a while back) and I was dying throughout the entire hour (if that's possible).
He has the build, the presence, the blond hair, gorgeous blue eyes...I just stared and squeed whenever he came on. XD And he totally does that squinty look of justice. It was magnificent!

Anyway, I'll be happy with Patrick Wilson or Aaron Eckhart. I just hope they won't cast some pretty-model-turned-actor guy or I'll be very disappointed.
Ohhh, and he must have amazing chemistry with RDJ!
no subject
GUH! YES!
Ohhh, and he must have amazing chemistry with RDJ!
Willingness to make out with RDJ is #1 Priority for who they cast. (That's kind of why I secretly what John Barrowman. Can you imagine the Steve/Tony? Just... )
no subject
Hell yes! Well, I'm not sure about Barrowman because he's Captain Jack Harkness for me and that would be distracting but I so need my epic Steve/Tony in the movies, it's the only thing I'm asking for :D
no subject
But him being Captain Jack Harkness explains how he survived all those years in the ice! Aaand... even if you're distracted by Jack, it's still Jack Harkness/Tony Stark and God, that's hot. Totally ineffective in the realm of crime fighting, because they would never leave the bedroom, but still, hot.
AND IF YOU CAST JOHN, WE CAN TOTALLY HAVE STEVE GOING UNDERCOVER:
no subject
And I'm thinking that since RDJ also sings they should totally go with Avengers: The Musical or something :P

bless, but Barrowman cannot act
Re: bless, but Barrowman cannot act
no subject
Invalid. RDJ can have chemistry with a used hanky. We just need someone who won't run away from him before the chemistry kicks in. (RDJ has sex pollen, I think.)
no subject
Also, since RDJ is middle aged, it would be weird to have a Steve who was significantly younger than him (like Kellan Lutz) and would maybe draw too much attention to RDJ's age as he gets older (if he does a few of the movies *crosses fingers*).
no subject
This is a major concern for me too. It will also be tricky because it's canon that Tony's a
love-sick puppymaaajor fanboy of Captain America. Whoever they cast needs to be on par with Jr. (Well... no one is on par with Jr. because Robert is an Ascended Fanboy God, but, you get what I mean!) :)no subject
It would be really odd to see RDJ fanboying someone who was not doing the Cap role justice. Plus, they'll definitely have to make sure it's someone with a strong presence, or else RDJ will steal every scene without trying.
no subject
(And for this reason, I'm kind of glad Jon F isn't directing The Avengers. He said if he did, it would just be about Tony and the others, not about The Team.)
no subject
But I think with the right script and director, it won't be all about scenes with Tony showing off and being BAMF, so as long as the Cap actor is good, he should be able to shine on his own.
no subject
Tony's part in the Avengers will totally depend on who they consider as the main character. Will it be Steve, Tony, or Fury? Fury makes the most sense as a plot device. It's about Fury's attempt to put a team together? How will he do it? Yada yada, the story writes itself.
Steve makes sense, too, because his arc easy follows The Hero's Journey. RDJ stated that he's really into Vogler, and they are really using it on I2M -- and probably will use it on the Avengers, too.
no subject
I would hope they tried to NOT think of someone as a main character and make it actually about a team. I think, considering that plot, that Fury should probably get the most screen time and focus, though.
Steve will be easy because of that, and because it's really hard to mess up his modern origin (found him, thawed him, out, hey, it's Captain America!) and Tony will be easy because they just have to slide him in from his movies. It's the other characters they'll have to really think about, probably. Well, Banner could be easy or hard depending on what they decided to do with him....
no subject
I'm thinking about it from a pure screenwriting perspective. There is always a main character -- even if a huge cast and multiple. (For example, Wolverine is the main character of the X-Men movies.)
UNLESS they make a true Robert Altman/Christopher Guest-esque ensemble film. They could do this. I would actually *love* to see them break formula and try.
Another question -- how does the team come together? They would do the New Avengers route where OMGCRISIS and everyone shows up -- and then the drama is how do they continue working as a team. Or they could actually "put together" a team, a la The Ultimates, where you need to go to everyone and recruit them. Then they woudn't actually gel together as a team until the Second Culmination Crisis. I'm dying to know. I really want to see the script. LOL.

Fan of Tony though I am, there are totally legitimate grievances with the character's behaviour in the last few years even if you discount the more out-there tie-ins. I really don't blame anyone who's prejudiced against the character; it's quite rational.
no subject
I would love John Barrowman for the role even though I know it would never happen.
no subject
I've never seen Jason Lewis in anything, but as far as looks go, I could picture him as Cap - a strong jaw and a handsome face, blonde and blue eyed, athletic looking and confident. Just about the right height too...
(Also, Will Smith? Really? People really want him to play Cap? I thought that was a joke...)
Well whoever they pick, I hope it's not just that actor is super famous or whatever. Steve is so iconic that giving someone the role just because they're pretty seems wrong; they need to be able to pull off Captain America's strength and utter confidence as well as Steve Rogers' more gentle, friendly, all around good guy air.
no subject
But could he pull it off? John is a fantastic talent, but he's known as a "song and dance man." Torchwood -- despite it's dramatic moments -- is a camp show. But, then again, we won't know until he gets it. For all we know the man's Robin Williams.
no subject
As for if he can do it, well he certainly has the confidence down, but who knows if he could really bring out the true essence of Captain America.
no subject
RE: Jensen as Cap, I just remember that Supernatural has been signed for Season 6. He's made movies while filming the show before, but Cap & Avengers back to back the way they are would be a strain while filming up in Canada, I'd think.
I'm getting to the point where presence and attitude will count. Cap is such a multi-faceted character, and RDJ is like a camera magnet. Whoever they get will need to be able to hold their own and still be this (http://fanworks.oshinchan.com/scans/cap3.jpg). That's a tough order, no matter what way you look at it.

Most of the above guys just don't have the barrel chest and shoulders that span the horizon like he does. I beleive with all my heart, if you can find the right chest/shoulders the face will come with it.
Also, at the same time. Tony should kind of age while Steve shouldn't because he's been frozen and dead so many times even Daniel Jackson (SG:1) can't keep up.
Breakdown of the guys skip for length.
(I love you Jensen Ackles but I don't think you should be Captain America.
John Barrowmannah not reallyMatt DamonNOLeonardo DiCaprioAND NO. His face is too shortJason Lewiskind of looks like chad micheal murray's older brother. So I'm gonna say no to that.Kellan Lutztoo youngRyan McPartlin maybe maybe maybe.
Chris Pine (Captain Fine)I don't see him throwing The Sheild with everything he's got and making it look good.Brad PittJUST BECAUSE YOU'RE PRETTY ENOUGH TO BE WITH ANGELINA JOLIE DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE MEANT FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA.Jeremy RennerEmphatic no.Alexander SkarsgardJust a bit too irish(?)Will Smithare you kidding?Jason Stathamhe's been typecasted into his roles already. don't see him being the jolly good guy out of the suit.Channing Tatumtoo skinnySam Worthingtonabsolute noMark Valley <this is a maybe in my book.)

I swear all this waiting and hype is going to kill me.

I wanted Skarsgard as Thor, though.
I dunno. I guess I still favour Eckhart.

Going through my folders trying to find the scan, but meh.
Love Brad Pitt, Eckhart, and Barrowman. I think that Cap needs epicness, they have already /facepalmed on Thor, don't ruin my Cap!

So, i want an actor and no a model!!!!!

Motto. That's what make-up artists, costume designers, and personal trainers are for. You can dye someone's hair, but if they can't act, than who cares.

Statham is a no for the simple fact that STEVE HAS HAIR.
Now, I never see his name on any of these lists, but Sam Jaeger should be considered. A lot of people have liked Aaron Eckhart for the role, if only he were younger, and that's Sam Jaeger in a nutshell.
But I think I want to see Chris Pine under the mask. That could just be that since Star Trek I've had a bit of a thing for him, but he also fits the bill [blonde hair, blue eyes, and all-American good looks] and he has shown he can definitely handle an active action hero role.
And if we get stuck with Jensen Ackles, here's what's going to happen: The movie will rely more heavily on special effects than acting and story telling, Jensen Ackles will try to put on a macho face without messing his puppy dog looks, it'll tank, and they'll do a reboot a few years later with Edward Norton because the new production team will realize that a pretty face is no substitute for good acting.
Got a bit rant-y and lost my way
See this guy? This is who Cap's always gonna look like in my head. It's a pity Dr Chris Brown is a vet and not an actor *sigh* 8(
On a more serious note, Derek Theler looks right for the part, to me at any rate. Strong jawline, open face, well-built. He looks NICE but also like you wouldn't want to piss him off. No idea about his acting ability though.
Will Smith - casting him would be an interesting move and now that he's getting roles other than "smart-mouthed-black-guy" he's proven that he can act and play a pretty good sympathetic/strong/serious/etc character. I'm more worried about the likely wank and race!fail coming from the audience/fandom if he's cast, than I am about Smith's ability to play a convincing Cap. I imagine if he was cast we'd get something more along the lines of a combined Isaiah Bradley/Steve Rogers character, than a straight up 616-based Cap-but-black.
Honestly, I'm more inclined towards an unknown/less well-known actor, so Damon, Pitt and DiCaprio are big "no"s for me.
About John Barrowman, I mean, he has the build for it and everything but...I dunno there. Not sure I could picture Jensen Ackles as the apple-pie eating All-American-Hero, but I've only seen him in Dark Angel and Supernatural anyway so...yeah. Bit unsure about those two.
The role needs someone who can pull off "nice guy/boy scout" switching with "big damn hero", and make it believable. Make Cap relatable and sympathetic, otherwise he might come off as unrealistic and "fake" to the audience. Unless they go for something more along the lines of Ultimate Cap. Which they better not.
Or I will bitch throughout the whole movie and piss off everyone else in the cinema and ruin their movie-going experience. It all depends on what the filmakers actually want to do with this movie.(Side note: Sam Worthington is like 5'9. Him and Anton Yelchin, who played Kyle Reese in Terminator: Salvation, are about the same height: http://www1.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Premiere+Warner+Bros+Terminator+Salvation+2hU5VrL3CF3l.jpg Christian Bale there is around 6')
no subject
I would love to see Brad Pitt, too. But again, probably just me.
Chris Pines is a no. He was good as Kirk. Which is exactly why I have a hard time seeing him as Steve Rogers. Sorry, Pines. You can only be one captain in my heart, and I feel it should be of the intergalactic sort.
I'm not to familiar with many others on that list. As long as they can act the part, I'm fine with it. Also, Will Smith? Okay, admittedly that'd be pretty kickass. But yeah, if we're going remotely canon he's a little to black. But I'd love to see him play someone.
