a break from your regularly scheduled fic...

...to bring you a mod-approved promotion!

Every fandom needs some good merfolk!AU. Come join the Merfolk Ficathon, where our characters get wet and awesome. Whether you like your merfolk realistic or cracky, this is the ficathon to let them loose in the water. Author sign ups last from August 5th to October 1st. A helpful prompt round will be in effect from August 5th to August 31st.

Maybe Tony's brilliance is the result of mixed blood. Maybe Steve has a secret, and Tony is suspicious. Maybe the Iron Man suit doesn't have to be water-proof. All these possibilities can be yours at the Merfolk Ficathon (come on, tell me that merman doesn't look like Steve just a bit).

Thank you mods, for your permission to post.

Merfolk AUs! I must admit, I'm always a little suspicious of them, but then I go ahead and read them I can't think of any I haven't liked. There's a House one where Wilson is losing his ability to breath above water that is still one of my all-time favorites, and I read a really complex Hawaii 5-0 one last week.

You're awesome for doing a merfolk ficathon!

Probably! I can't imagine there are that many complex H50 merfolk AUs on AO3.

You should read the Wilson fic!
Asphyxiation (http://users.livejournal.com/_ares/9189.html#cutid1): Wilson learns his pre-history, gets naked, and jumps off a cliff. Warning for something that may or may not be a suicide attempt.

And the sequel In High Seas (http://users.livejournal.com/_ares/12772.html), which... character death? Maybe? I should probably reread these before I try to warn for subject matter, but I seem to recall there being a lot of room for interpretation in these stories.

Aw, thanks! I'm happy to rec these because I love their dreamy atmospheres, which is actually what I remember most about them (I'm a bit hazy on the plot, yeah, I should reread), but I also think of them fondly because of an instance of fandom being a small world - the author contacted me when we were both in Doctor Who fandom because she'd just started at a school near me, and afterward we realized we'd been in House fandom together and had previously read each other's fics. I was so excited when I realized she had written the merfolk!Wilson fic.

I read one once - brace yourself - it was Mulder/Krycek. Krycek was a mermaid, which in this universe was a fairly intelligent mammal - about dolphin level. They were also really rare, never been kept in captivity. Krycek is injured by a propellor, and taken to the aquarium where Mulder is a marine biologist. Scully is the manager. Mulder, in the course of his examination, collects semen from Krycek, and apparently in mermaid-world, a handjob means you're dating, because he becomes quite fixated on Mulder. Mulder thinks he's pretty, so one night he sneaks into the tank and he and Krycek hump. The next day Scully is like 'so there are cameras in the mermaid tank OH GOD YOU BANGED A FISH look take a holiday'. Mulder agrees he has clearly lost the plot, and that he'll take the next week off. Then he finds the camera blind spots and gets Krycek there so him can anally penetrate him, which Krycek seems rather dubious about. Then he goes on holiday, and Krycek pines. They release Krycek back into the wild at about the same time Mulder jerks off in the ocean, and Krycek tracks him down like a shark with blood. Anyway, I was expecting this whole fic to end with the reveal that mermaids are actually an intelligent species. Nope. Not at all. Mulder lives happily ever after dating an animal. He even thinks about how nice it is not to have to put up with insecurities and stuff. Also, Jim and Blair from Sentinel cameo as mermaids, and Mulder inspires them to try anal or something, IDK.

Aaaaaanyway, despite that I really love mermaid fics and have like five WIPs where Tony is a mermaid (why always Tony? DON'T KNOW) but it just occurred to me Wanda would make a fantastic mermaid.

Ahaha, that's priceless. You know, sometimes I wonder how I managed to miss all of the crack (and slash, for that matter) during my time devouring X-Files fanfiction.

Why'd you have to mention mermaid!Wanda? Now I'm getting ideas. She and Pietro would be BAMF merfolk, and who knows, maybe being sea creatures would improve their relationship with Magneto. (Would they still have been in the Brotherhood?) And and and... dude, in canon the first time she and Carol meet is when Carol stops by Avengers mansion to design a drug that will allow her to breath underwater so Carol can rescue Namorita. Just a little tweaking and either Carol is rescuing mermaid!Wanda or she and Wanda team-up underwater. Dammit, Valtyr!
