Very disappointing. They didn't share a single (1) scene. So much for the reunion I was hoping for.

We didn't even get Steve picking up the bloody phone hoping it's Tony. Ugh. I'm so disappointed. I can't even.

At least we know Tony's going to save everyone in the next part? And the after credits was great. But UGH.

I actually loved it to bits???
When the credits rolled I was stunned because it didn’t feel that long and it kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. No unnecessary lull that bored me.

I love how it felt like everyone has good parts and not focusing on certain key characters.

I’m kind of glad they didn’t rush the reunion/the talk though, because I had this hope that it would be treated respectfully at the right time, and apparently there was no time at all XD Don’t let me down, Russos! *narrows eyes at Avengers 4*.

Two moments that made me squealed right there at the theater:
When Steve said earth just lost its strongest defender, I assumed he meant Tony???? Bc it was scenes after the anchor scene that mentioned Tony Stark missing???
When Steve said ‘home’ after Sam? asked where to head the quinjet. AND THEY WENT TO COMPOUND AW STEEEVE I was so worried that they were going to Wakanda.

RHODEY! Rhodey looking out for Sam!!!! And looking for Sam at the end T_T

What happened was totally what Strange saw on that one scenario that they won though. That schemer.

Tony’s new suit. I thought there was gonna be Sailor Moon-like transformation or something, but that’s okay that there wasn’t bc it was awesome????

I thought Thanos was a good villain. I like that he was a goal-driven villain and not power-hungry, and that he stopped when he’s achieved his goal.

Pls excuse the incoherency. This movie really shook me

Loved it to bits too!

I loved that we had such unexpected combinations - Thor & Rocket, wtf, I adored their interactions - and the plot and, well, Thanos. Great villain there.

I thought Steve meant Tony too and Tony always carries the phone with him and he's still so torn about the whole thing. And home is the Compound! Two years after and it's still hooome.

I don't think it's too insane to hope for more material next movie - after all, Strange's plan seemed to hinge on Tony surviving and all the original Avengers seem to be alive - plus it's a great starting point for fic.

I'm sad they didn't get the phone scene, too.

Same. I had an unexpectedly good time for a movie that didn't give me the reunion I'd hoped for. I do hope Avengers 4 is THE Steve/Tony movie though. IT BETTER BE.

SAME!!! And when after all his "the Avengers mean more to you than me" speeches in CW him "going home" there WAS SO GOOD!! And then it was actually the compound! I'm still so glad about that.

I also still love that Tony, while he never gets to make that call, CARRIED the phone around.

My husband laughed at me for squealing at all of these.

I loved the Rhodey and Sam bits, too!!!

What happened was totally what Strange saw on that one scenario that they won though. That schemer.

With his words at the end, that HAS to be it. We better get Tony and the gauntlet next time and Strange having protected him, because THAT IS THE scenario that saves them next time. *wibbles*

I had my worried about Thanos, but I agree. He was a good villain.

And after credit's scene! Carol! GIVE ME!

I couldn't agree more!

Plus, Tony carrying around the phone? Yes please!

Mostly commenting to say: I agree with everything you said about Tony, Steve, Rhodey, and Strange. Given that Tony didn't get to see Steve or the rest of the team except for Bruce (which was awesome) and given that there wasn't even a phonecall, I was still happy with what the movie did with the both of them, showing us very clearly where they are at and what they think about each other, all of which made sense to me. I was pretty thrown, in a good way, by both the "defender" comment and the "home" from Steve, I would not have expected that. And while I'm not usually fond of "interrupted right before a character can do/say the important thing" plot devices, I also felt like there wasn't time and space for a reconciliation in this movie. So to see Tony conflicted and almost making the call (and having the phone on him on a simple stroll out with Pepper in the first place!) before being the first to run into danger when he's interrupted? Good enough.

/also, hi guys, I've been a lurker around here so far, still pretty new to the fandom compared to others, but decided to jump in just now

Hello! Always nice to see new people jump in!! :D

I loved the Tony and Bruce meeting too and also that Bruce was the one who called the rest finally.

I was still happy with what the movie did with the both of them, showing us very clearly where they are at and what they think about each other, all of which made sense to me.

Yes. I was sad that they didn't at least get an interrupted phone call, because I think Steve going "Tony? Tony??? Tony?!!!" without getting an answer would have killed me. But I think that despite them not talking the film managed to show where they are with each other. I think I liked what we got better than I would have a rushed reconciliation that just ignores all of their issues and then jumps over what happened in CW completely.

True. It was so packed and with the big cast there wasn't much time to do it justice.

I'm glad who wasn't the only one the small bits we got resonated with. XD

God same. My husband

Plus, Tony carrying around the phone? Yes please!

Yes, I loved it so much. When he just pulled it out of the pocket so casually, hehe. "Not on speaking terms, Bruce. Oh, yeah, ehm this? I just keep it with me at all times. Nothing to it."

I can just imagine him occasionally taking the phone out, staring at the contact, muttering about whatever it is that just bothers him and that he impulsively wanted to say to Steve and then berating himself and putting it away again.
navaan: (Marvel Avengers Tony Stark at work)

[personal profile] navaan 2018-04-27 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, yes, he would totally be like that. He probably stuffs the phone into his pocket impulsively the first time, gets angry at himself or Steve for even doing that, puts it back, and then next day takes it with him again. considers calling, hopes Steve will call - but nothing happens. And he keeps muttering at it and finally just keeps it close.

Exactly! And it some point it's almost therapeutic to have it with him. It's like having Steve in his pocket that he can rant to without any backlash. It's a little piece of hope that keeps him going through the rough days, that makes him feel safe. It's a connection to his family. Dyfunctional maybe, but still his family.

also that Bruce was the one who called the rest finally

Yes, that was a nice moment, when Tony was gone and he picked it out of the rubble. Bruce was great throughout the whole movie, I really liked his scenes with everyone and his struggle with the Hulk.

And I thought it was a storytelling feat to pull this many characters and movie strands together and not only have a coherent plot, but actually have lots of characters scenes and interactions that made sense for where all these people were coming from. Which means that I enjoyed all the Steve and Tony scenes no matter who they were with, because it felt like the movie did them right.

Plus, the set-up for post-movie fanfic is pretty good and I like that this puts Steve and Tony in a different position from where they were at the end of CW - not via reconciliation yet but via lots of other stuff happening to them and therefore changing where they are at mentally and emotionally.

I'm so relieved that but Steve and Tony made it out alive. I really didn't think that there was any way that was going to happen. I thought that the character interactions and I agree that the Rhodey/S moments were previous ( hey there, new dude shop). Steve and Tony's reunion in Avengers 4 is going to be all that much sweeter after another year of pinning. And maybe we'll see more hopeful/positive fics? Anyway, I'm excited.

Side note: anyone else really bothered by Wanda's lack of accent?? What happened?

I genuinely adored the movie even if Steve and Tony had next to no content whatsoever.

Steve calls Tony the world's greatest defender??? Tony has been carrying the phone around ON HIS PERSON for the past two years????? GOD????? the MCU is feeding us table scraps but god if I won't take what I can get

(Steve losing Bucky again was actually the worst possible thing, plus Tony losing Peter right after alskdfjsldkfjasd I WAS A SOBBING MESS IN THE THEATER)

Yikes, I do not remember this 'greatest defender' moment that everyone's talking about haha, but I thought it was a pretty decent movie! Given the pt. 2 set photos and all, they are clearly gearing up for a United We Stand scenario after this one failed. I think Tony's conversation in the beginning with Pepper about dreams and reality mixing up was significant...and possibly foreshadowing??

Anyway, good moments: The Phone Drama--my god, it was gay. Tony stuttering over how he and Steve aren't talking and Bruce in total disbelief. Steve's longing expressions of longing. I do wish Tony and Stephen got along...like Tony has spent 6 years planning defense and begging everyone to get in on it, so why make him douchey and hostile at Dr. Strange when shit's actually going down? @mcu end this trope

My mans Tony and Thor stopping moons and reigniting stars with their damn body!!! About damn time Thor was a god, but I really enjoyed IM's physical fights with Thanos. He basically utilized every military tactic from Roman legion to futuristic lasers and it was ~~perfect~~.

I also enjoyed the team back on Earth, how back-to-back and united everyone was without creepily setting Steve up as the head of Wakanda's armies or whatever. Cackled at Steve and T'challa nyooooming it before the armies.

OKOYE'S JUDGEMENT FACE when Bruce tripped in the Hulkbuster omg!!

Not sure what was up with Thanos' backstory tho? I don't understand how to feel about it, so imma just leave it. I didn't expect the ending, but it was more confounding than emotional, really. Definitely had a 'ooh wonder what's gonna happen next' feel to it, so I'm not too broken up. All in all, it left me wanting the Avengers 4! <3

Yes. Actually this whole movie was like a fic fodder XD. That damn flip phone that Tony carried around for two years but was never used. And Steve looked so angsty the whole time and calling Tony earth's best defender (I thought it was strongest, but it was best XD). It's so weird that there were good Stevetony moments when they didn't even share a single scene.

IMAGINE in the last two years Steve pining for the compound and its residents. Steve feeling homesick for something from post-ice is just such a wonderful thing. I know in AoU he said he was home, but the way it was executed/shot, it was like he was just saying it in front of Tony. It made me so happy that he actually meant it.

I also still love that Tony, while he never gets to make that call, CARRIED the phone around.

OMG YES. Even when he was jogging? I think? he carried it. And had been for two years. And that conflicted reaction when Bruce asked him to make a call? Gold. I can't believe there were great Stevetony moments and they didn't even share a scene.

Hi there! I really enjoyed reading your comments, they were very eloquently put :)

This. It blew my mind seeing this movie because apparently, ensemble superhero movies could be a good movie. I honestly did not expect it to be this good, having seen Avengers 1&2 and JL. And yes, it didn't even cross my mind to hope for a shared scene between Steve and Tony because I was too excited in following the plot. It was a really good writing.

Plus, the set-up for post-movie fanfic is pretty good and I like that this puts Steve and Tony in a different position from where they were at the end of CW - not via reconciliation yet but via lots of other stuff happening to them and therefore changing where they are at mentally and emotionally.

I agree. This movie is perfect catalyst to speed up the making up process, but in a respectful way. This problem is bigger than their shared ones. And whatever still left unresolved between them would seem much less significant than saving earth and hopefully they would be much more amenable to make up and move on.

XD Rhodey & Sam's arc does give more context to what kind of relationship they had between AoU and CACW, while training together at the Compound. It looks like Tony's not the only one who's become a mentor.

Steve and Tony's reunion in Avengers 4 is going to be all that much sweeter after another year of pinning

Yes. I'd rather they didn't share a scene at all rather than having a half-assed one.
